  • The upbound ALGOMA EQUINOX is seen passing under the Clarence St. lift bridge in Port Colborne, Oct.31, 2023. She had just passed the downbound ALGOTERRA, which was waiting to enter Lock 8. She then passes by the barge ST MARYS CEMENT II, which, along with her tug SEA EAGLE II, are docked at the east wall. Later she passes by the scrap ships at the MRC yard, including TECUMSEH and NORISLE. JOSEPH H. THOMPSON's bow is seen separated from the ship's mid-section.

Sad to see that the ships that have been scrapped are fully gone and new arrivals are now being worked on

Wonder why MRC is scrapping the Thompson and Norisle before the Tecumseh. Considering the Tecumseh has been there longer.

Probably because the Thompson is the easiest to cut up while the Norisle is the quickest, or that's just how the scrapyard works.

@bluerazor7049 Also the Thompson was already stripped before it got dropped off so that could be why. It was Stripped and ready to go

@@christianbastian1667 Yeah, as soon as the inspection failed, they knew that it was her time to go. Which is fair, besides they do have the Michigan Trader which will probably take over the work of the Thompson. I'm just curious to see what'll happen to the Laura L. VanEnkevort as she's only 4 years in the fleet.

@@bluerazor7049probably going to build another barge like they did with the Michigan trader

The Thompson's a war veteran. It's sad to see her go. So long, Marine Robin.

I was there 3 days ago.... As a sailor...It is a horrible thing to see a ship die. Very sad. Every thing I was on is gone now. (Steam turbines)...

How did they pull the ship onto land?

At first, the ships are pushed into the inclined scrap slip by tugs, while also being pulled up by cable winches located on shore. The ships can be worked on while they are partially on land, and they are continually winched up onto shore as needed.

Algoma needs to take better care of their ships. The equinox already looks like she’s 50 years old from all her rust!
