We diagnose and replace the friction disk on a Ariens 1028 rear engine riding mower that will not go into reverse.
Ariens model number 927046 RM 1028 E 10HP 28" riding mower
We also show where to adjust the brake and tension on the friction disc
This drive disk has other symptoms that may include stopping on hills or smell of burning rubber, slow to get up to speed.

In my opinion. Another great job!!! 👍👍👍
I appreciate your kind words of support!
Excellent video!! The explanation of how it works, what's wrong, and how to fix it were spot on. The camera shots very clear, the audio as well.
Thank you for a very helpful video.
Glad to help thanks for your comment!!
Nice video. Those Ariens along with the old Snapper rear engine riders were pretty much bulletproof. The drive discs were the common wear item. Very simple, yet reliable machines.
Definitely some of my favorites to work on!
I picked up a non running Ariens 1330 earlier this year for my son. He just bought his first house.
I had to go through all the wiring, replace the head gasket and lap the valves, new tires and belts. Luckily the friction wheel was ok, but the idler pulley was shot.
I did find that you can stand this in its end to gain easier access to the drive assembly.
It sounds like you did a lot of work to it, well worth it for a machine like this in my opinion!
I got one of those, got it for free a few years back, runs really good, works as it should, going to fix it up, make it look new and sell it.
Definitely sought after since it goes through almost all standard gates
Awesome video! Will be tearing into my 1028 this weekend 🙂
Good luck, I wish you the best with your repair!
Great video. You explain things so people can understand. Thanks
Thanks for that! Appreciate your words of support
i have a 1989 Honda 3011 rear engine rider and it was built to last forever. Mine is in great condition.
They sure are! Basically same at the smaller Toro RER they used to make
Nice one, Martin! I’m guessing you’re still enjoying the newness and quality of your newest lift. 😉🔧👍
Thank you! I am loving the extra width and not feeling like extremely heavy machines are tearing it up. Of course, it is starting to show some blemishes since I am not the easiest on things
Seen that done many times, usually on sno-blowers. Most techs make a point of cleaning off the convex wheel as the rubber which comes off the drive wheel builds up on the convex wheel, turning it into a slick. I think snapper and simplicity made almost identical models which, as you point out, are still running today if properly maintained. That deck chute reminds me of the same design on millions of Craftsman 42" decks which encourages foot amputations, the chute cover on the Craftsmans, all being plastic, are soon removed and tossed.
Good point to mention there! I do see them get covered and slick many times, I should have mentioned this! This one had a little surface rubber but was easily wiped off. Amputee 5000 is about right!
Thanks 🙏
Thanks for watching!
THAT BABY IS READY TO RIDE SOME WHEELIES .,,,,,,YEEEE HAW
Ha! Ready to rip and roll for sure!
So I got a question so I replaced that disk.I adjusted the Spring all the way down. But I still don't have reverse and first Gear..What do I do
So all you have is forward gears then? The throw of the shift lever will need to be adjusted if so
@@IndRepair So the friction desk when I put it in reverse and I grab it to spin it by hand it grips really good, but when I try to drive it, it don't move.
@@stevenburge4288 Hmm, does the disk have a large amount of rubber still on it or is it clean? This one had some and I did not show cleaning that well. Is it on the opposite side of the middle of the wheel that when in reverse quite a bit or sitting more towards the middle still?
@IndRepair It's a brand new friction disk that I put on.I'm wondering if it's something in the Gears .That's going bad
