    Normally, when an animal kills too many of its prey animals, there's not enough food to sustain the predator > the number of predators decreases > less predators means more prey > more prey means more predator food, etc.
    Problem is, cats can just go to their owner's homes and eat their cat food, which completely throws off this natural balance. They could theoretically kill all birds and it wouldn't affect them.

      This is what I have been thinking. We've had cats in our family basically all my life. All outdoors cats and free to roam. Now that I think back on it, it makes me shiver to think how many animals they must have killed. The other one of the two latest cats was one especially deadly hunter, he even caught a water vole once, which is basically a cat-sized water rat. I didn't even know such animal existed before the cat brought it in. If I ever get a new cat, I'm going to teach them walk on a leash just like our dog, or if we have our house by then, I will build a super large catio. No more free-roaming outdoors cats.

    I have a stray cat. He visited me one day and stayed. I thought he was feral. He had a seriously broken rear leg that had healed in a funny position. I thought that was the reason he visited me. I thought he was sick and hurt and came to me for help. I sent him to the vet with the instructions of save the leg if possible or amputate, get him his shots, give him a check up, and neuter him. Unfortunately he needed an amputation. The vet also told me he was already neutered and had also been declawed. I have no intention of finding his previous owner. That cat was lost in the wild with a broken leg and no murder mittens long enough for the leg to heal. I can't imagine how hard it was for him.

    Here in Australia, many lizards, birds, etc, are dying at record rates to cats. It is a big problem here, but not nearly as bad as it is in NZ. Over there many species have already gone extinct due to even a handful of cats. Even after I explained we live near a major road (where cats are found dead ALL THE TIME), and that we live near several wildlife preserves, these shelters still insisted on outdoor access.

      Maybe because a free roaming cat is a low maintenance pet. You can go to work and the cat cares for itself. A indoor cat is a high maintenance pet. If you go to work, you should have two cats, because living a cat all by itself causes behavioral problems. Additionally you have to care more about hygiene and cat spaces in your home. A indoor cat just doesn't fit into the lifestyle of many existing cat owners.

    • @mejuliie
      @mejuliie หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@steffenpanning2776 That's true. But if people are unwillig to care adequately for their animal companions they should get one that doesn't need as much stimulation and enrichment.
      Also for people who work, an easy solution is adopting two cats instead of one. Leave the adults cats that prefer to be the only cat to people who are able to give more of their time to provide them with companionship.
      Again, you are correct. But it's up to people to understand that if they cannot provide adequate stimulation and enrichment, without letting their cat(s) free roam, they should be looking to get another animal.
      The only exception would be in countries that don't have an overpopulation problem, or a problem with cats having outsized negative effects on the environment, is semi-ferals being adopted. Even then there are steps that can be taken to mitigate potential harm to vulnerable species - like spaying/neutering, playing with cat and feeding wet food before they go out, limiting outdoor access during dawn and dusk in spring and summer, providing toys and enrichment items in their outdoor setting, etc. .

    Another option to consider is reading up on how to introduce your kitty to wearing a harness, not all cats take to it but if they do it provides an option for supervised exploration. This allows you to take them out in a controlled way where you can keep them safe from hazards like cars, cruel and abusive humans, dangerous animals including aggressive cats or dogs, toxic plants or other toxins etc while also keeping other critters safe from kitty. Letting them explore while wearing a harness and a leash can bring in the benefits of outside time while limiting the risks both to your cat and to other animals they might encounter along the way.

    I live in the country and constantly have new ferals showing up. The benefit (even in the country), I never have to deal with mice/vermin in my yard. Of course I always have cuddly fur babies nearby.
    The negative is I spend thousands a year on spay/neutering. If they stay on the property for more than a month, I take them to verify they aren’t chipped, then Vaccinate/TNR…
    Kids, wife, and myself have brought MANY inside permanently, but 19 cats & 4 dogs (1 foster) inside (large house on 9 acres) means we basically spend $1k a month just on food/litter, and $4-5k annually on the vet.
    7 outside now I take care of, although 5 are a mom & newborn litter that is about to get spayed (kittens in 2 months). We spend quite a lot on heated beds & water dishes for the garage & shelter house. It’s a lot of work.

      @@aethervvav1658 What people really need to wake up to is how much damage dogs do. We need a video about how dogs are, in fact, magnitudes more disruptive and invasive than cats are. Not just about hunting unnecessarily, noise pollution,the toxic damages their uncleaned waste does, and actually real damage done to human beings.
      @matthewboire6843 More people cannot accept they are wrong about the substantial damages dogs do. Everyone praises their dog as the best, but if every dog was the best, there wouldn't be barking, or gargantuan turds on the sidewalk, or attacks on EVERYTHING. Cats are perfectly fine pets as long as their kept inside, they aren't "not fine" as you so eloquently worded. Dogs can fully be nuisances without needing to be free-roam.
      These things need to be talked about instead of a glorified "keep your cats inside" post. We need to address the REAL invasive pets among us, the animal that causes the most issues. Because it is NOT cats, like so many of you believe.

    • @SMFN_Else
      @SMFN_Else 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What people need to wake up to is that there is a pet significantly more damaging and detrimental not only to the natural world, but to human society as well. Spoilers, it isn't the animal Kyle felt the need to make a whole video on. It is dogs. People need to wake up to how intrusive dogs are to modern society. Not everybody needs a hunting partner anymore, they no longer have a crucial role in society, they have just become waste spreaders and noise polluters. All the people in this comment section like you, blaming cats, are fully ignoring the horrendous consequences brought upon by the widespread owning of dogs. Training dogs means to remove the "dog" nature in them. The barking, the food greed, the aggression, all dog natures that need to be trained out for dogs to be suitable living with humans. We never tamed wolves, just brought them inside and wrapped them in a blanket.
      @matthewboire6843 Many, many more people cannot accept they are fully wrong about what they have to say about dogs. Cats are far from "not fine" pets, as you so eloquently put, cats are fine pets as long as they are kept inside. Dogs, however, can still be heard barking from as far as a block away from INSIDE their own home, without the need to be let out and free-roaming. That is not fine. Dogs can still leave gargantuan piles of stinking waste all over the sidewalks without me ever needing to even see them. That is not fine.
      We're talking about environmental impact, so let me bring up the fact people aren't taking their cats into nature reserves and unleashing them on unsuspecting, protected wildlife. Or if they are, I have yet to see a single article written about it, unlike dogs which have several articles written about protected animals they have caused the deaths of. To cite an example, a PROTECTED Canadian goose was fully mauled to death before the owner could wrangle the animal and flee the scene, taking zero responsibility. Cats also aren't dumping potentially hundreds of pounds a year worth of waste into those protected water systems, for said protected animals to drink from.
      This video was fully made about the wrong invasive pet. A poorly trained cat kept inside might pee on the couch, scratch your dining table, and meow in the middle of the night. A poorly trained dog kept inside will wake up the entire street, chew up precious things, steal your food, attack any company brave enough to come over, and also pee on your couch. A full six part series of documentaries could be made on the disastrous impact of dogs, but instead Kyle chose to make a glorified "keep your cats inside pls" post. I know this video is about cats, and I am gong to get TONNES of hate from the dog defending crowd, but this stuff NEEDS to be said, its getting extremely out of hand, and clearly Kyle isn't going to say it.

    I'm confused at 12:45 why not bring out the fact that you can just bring your cats outside on a leash (like we do with 100's of millions of dogs). Getting the harness on can be quite tricky. Smaller you start it, the better the results (treats always help and doing it inside). And yes, walking a cat is totally different from dogs 99% of the time. You have to assume more of a supervisor role where you decide where the cat can't go and just follow along. Can't speak about all countries, where I live it has worked for over 15 years. If there are unleashed dogs (which is usually illegal) I suggest a "light" tap on their noses with your shoe when they are the problem (I've only kicked one dog pls don't kill me).

    growing up rural and on a quasi-farm (had some farm animals, but it was a hobby, we made no $$) it drives me nuts whenever I see free-roaming cats and dogs. "they deserve to be able to explore! it makes them happy!" the native fauna isn't happy! and your cat won't be very happy if it's dead! I'm so tired of seeing cats and dogs that have been flattened by cars. the only cat I will begrudgingly allow outside is a working cat. and there are still other options to suppress rodent problems inherent with livestock.
    the dog my dad had when I was 5 or so got hit by a car. the dog he had when I was in high school was poisoned. when we had horses there was a neighbor kid who would buy an entire bag of apples and feed it to our 2 horses, no matter how many times we told him not to. one of our horses was prone to foundering and the problem didn't clear up until we moved the horses to an entirely different pasture. my best friend accidentally ran over her own cat one winter morning. when I brought my dads old barn cat inside to retire she was on the edge of death. I expected a few months, a year max before she passed. after 2 heavy rounds of deworming and defleaing I got FIVE more years.
    if ur not worried about ur native wildlife, worry about ur pet! it's NOT SAFE out there! do not let these animals run free!

      @@Spamhard how good a cat is at being a hunter varies wildly and there's obviously no way to verify that before getting a cat. I've had many cats. our first barn cat was insane and the chipmunks were gone within a week of getting her. we found her stalking moles underground on multiple occasions. we let her have a litter of kittens before getting her fixed. of the 2 kittens we kept, one ONLY wanted to hunt birds (much to my step-mothers chagrin, since he was brought into the house and he managed to kill every finch and canary no matter HOW she tried to keep them safe. still not sure how he got the canary hanging from the middle of the ceiling.) and the other didn't hunt at all. my mom got me my first cat when I was like, 5, and had her declawed (unfortunately) and she still would bring me voles from the attic. my current idiot son watched a mouse run across the floor and didn't even get up to inspect.

      @@firesighnavatar3283 But even from the point of a cat that's a 'good' hunter, there was a pretty recent studyy that sshowed cats didn't really kill that many rats, and rats weren't particularly scared of cats, so as pest control in farms and such areas they weren't even hugely effective, which is pretty funny.

    • @firesighnavatar3283
      @firesighnavatar3283 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Spamhard the average rat is bigger than most cats would usually want to take on, in my experience. The pests they are going to go after are smaller rodents, usually (and similar sized non-pests). I was agreeing with you that the quality you get is unreliable, and therefore aren't the best option in many cases. If you have a rat problem, you'll want a ratter, specifically, which is probably going to be a kind of dog. Or a mink, if you're the Mink Man.

    There's also a huge number of stray cats in Turkey, probably in the millions. Most Turkish people love stray cats and dogs, so they are allowed to roam the streets and many people even feed them. While this seems wholesome at first glance, I think what they're inadvertently doing is choosing these stray cats and dogs over the native animals. I haven't been to too many places in Turkey, but the biodiversity seems really poor even compared to somewhere like London.

A cat had captured a mourning dove and ate it. The cats take advantage of my bird feeders for their hunting grounds. I used to have a neighbor that let out her tomcat. He would impregnate the stray females. I've had two female cats come into my garage and have their litters. Their children come back to my yard and decorate my garden with their poo.

    I think fundamentally there's going to be a difference in approach in different parts of the world. I'll tell you now, you'll never get rid of outdoor cats in Europe. Indoor only cats are very much the exception, often because the cat has a health condition. People often have smaller homes and therefore the cats are allowed to roam outside to exercise (though a traditional cat flap in the door usually). Walking a cat on a lead would be seen as really wierd, people would ask, if you wanted a pet you could walk, why not get a dog? In some parts of southern Europe, "community cats" which are owned collectively by villages are common, and you should see Istanbul, cat capital of the world probably. And since wildlife has had some chance to adapt over the past 3000 years or so, they're probably less vulnerable than in the Americas and Australasia. So I think it's fair to focus on those areas and don't worry about Europe.

    Took it to a vet for treatment and a few days later was asked if we wanted to adopt, we said yes and took it into our care, after around a month the vets rang to check in with for an update and asked if they could have the cat as there surgery cat unfortunately passed away and all the staff fell in love with her.
    Safe to say that with all the medication and rreatments the poor tortoiseshell needed it was in the best interest for "gem" as we called her that the surgery took her on and now she is a very happy kitty.
