  • Living legends of jazz reconvened for another unbelievable Zoom hangout in advance of the third Fridays at Five Celebration of Wayne Shorter (broadcasted at www.sfjazz.org/watch on July 31, 2020), with saxophonist, composer and 2011 NEA Jazz Master Branford Marsalis joining Wayne, Herbie Hancock, and Terence Blanchard in conversation. Wayne, Terence and Branford were all members of Art Blakey’s iconic Jazz Messengers early in their careers, and in reflecting on this week’s concert, they discuss the lasting influence of Blakey, the nature of spontaneous creation, how Wayne’s music fosters the spirit of discovery, being in the moment, and how Wayne and Herbie gave Terence and Branford a “roadmap” to follow in their musical lives. Finally, they talk about the joy and beauty of playing with Wayne’s quartet featuring Danilo Pérez, John Patitucci, and Brian Blade.

    These guys are living legends. A lot of wisdom. Notice how even from the start of the video, nobody is talking apart from Herbie. These guys know how to LISTEN to each other and vibe, that's a big part of the reason why all of them can actually play and improvise.

    Great to hear these musicians talking about music! This is a real treat. Nice to hear them mention Larry Coryell's version of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. I've always been surprised that Coryell's recording didn't receive more recognition. It was a truly tremendous performance and recording.

    It's great that people want to be generous and give to Wanye shorter. He is a great artist. But doesn't he have Medicare or some other insurance?

    • @sfjazz
      @sfjazz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi pat - when covid started, wayne was going into a public clinic for regular treatment. to stay covid safe, he needed top notch in-home care throughout the pandemic, which is often not covered by standard insurance. this was definitely a covid-related benefit.
