The intersting thing about James and Gerald, that even though they shared the studio gear together as Drexciya, many of tracks were made solo. The Roland D20, wich was such a big centrepiece of Drexciya early years, was probably Geralds main synth, as he used it in his later projects even after turning to new gear after 94. Seems like the combination of sonics of different machines inspired themes of the projects for Gerald especially. I consider Gerald and James true geniuses, mainly becose of how they navigated and used the gear they had, without following trends of the time. The big analog electro boom of 2000s is only because the use of old analog synths from the 80s was huge part of the unique character of their music. Along with inspiration from European genres like minimal wave, new beat and disco.
Ive rarely heard anyone make such a diverse body of work next to James Stinson (rip) and Frank Degroodt (operator, urban electro, fastgraph, ect.) Gerald definitely earned his place in techno history.
I had chance to Play with Dopplereffekt 2 times, hé is a true genius. You should have a listen to Ultradyne too, it’s a duo from Detroit closed to Drexciya
brilliant guy indeed. love all his projects
