This was the moment that Person of Interest transformed from yet another procedural to a brilliant and smart show. Elias played both John and us, the viewers, perfectly. I just love how dignified and polite he remains after the reveal, hinting that there's a decent guy who's been through Hell and back still in there, but one that's willing to do anything to get what he wants.
@Marven Anayee none of the villians were handled quite as well as Elias, except for Root and Greer. Roots build up was ominous and then blindsided you at the last second with the death of Corwin who they were trying to make you believe was going to be a lot more important. Greer had the Charisma of a great villain but it was obvious they didn't know what to do with him in the last season when Samaritan took his place as the actual threat.

@SonicDMonkey Definitely, this scene was when I ultimately and irreversibly feel in love with the show!
@@mtlson but casting a lower key/more mild mannered actor as Elias is I think part of the genius. This show had a wealth of great characters main and lesser ones.
The moment POI pulled a "Usual Suspects" and this kind hearted professor revealed himself as one of the best criminal masterminds on TV, it was the moment Person Of Interest became one of the best TV shows ever.
It was also a reveal of just how far ahead the machine was in terms of directing Harold and John to the save the lives necessary to prepare for, survive and eventually defeat Samaritan. On re-watch many of the "saves" weren't just lives saved but a move on a chessboard. They facilitated the tasks ahead for Finch and Reese. I do like that the Machine was imprinted with Harold's conscience and ultimately determined that individual lives are NOT irrelevant.
Carl Elias was one of the most interesting characters ever seen on a TV screen. He was devilish and intriguing at the same time. Even after five years, there was still a lot to learn about him. After John and Carter, Elias was my favorite character on POI. I really miss POI, my all-time favorite tv show.
I just noticed a nice detail about the episode Elias never lied to John in this episode. He only said that he didn't want to see those guys in his town, he runs new York streets so it is his town. He makes good on his offer to stay at out of John's way
The Elias reveal was fantastic. I totally did not see it coming till the last moment. Elias is ruthless and willing to do whatever it takes to win but still maintains the kind mild mannered every man that we were first introduced too. The first few seasons when POI was primarily focused on more small scale stuff was when it was at its best.
yeah i know it couldn't keep the small stuff like it was doing, but the later seasons with mark, his ex partner and the evil machine and of course the H.R. war things got too complicated
Upon rewatching the episode and the series, I like how ingenious and ruthless Elias' opening gambit is. As John later points out, Elias is willing to use the children of his enemies in his schemes. But how does he do that? By being a teacher that listens to them, that inspires and encourages them. He got the kids to think of a life outside of their criminal families, starving the Russians of new recruits while picking up a few bits of intel. We saw one kid willing to put himself on the line for Elias. So he drained the Russians of soldiers while giving their kids a better future. A ruthless use of empathy, all things considered.
With Elias, he does everything for a reason - and sometimes those reasons are multi-faceted. He's one of the most fascinating vilain characters on POI. He knows what he does is evil; but, he also believes he's making the streets of NYC better by taking down the other families and reducing crime. He's an anti-hero in a way.
@@mish375 I would only correct that Elias knows his actions are violent and harmful, but firmly believes HIS way is better than what preceded him or what might follow. I don't believe that Elias saw his actions as evil, only necessary.
When I see this, I think how dumb was all drama of The Mentalist about Red John and the reveal of Red John. This scene with Elias is so excelent, so hard, so polemic. He looks like a simple man, but is so dark and so inteligent. Elias is my best vilain of TV.
As it happens The Mentalist is also one of my favorite show, to be honest, the suspense built around Red John is epic, but the final reveal is so disappointing. I wish they had ended Red John in s3
I like how when detective Carter shows the guy the security cam picture it is blurry, most of the times on shows the picture is perfectly clear using the zoom and enhance cliche.
Elias was old school and still respectful towards his enemies, this scene shows him only shooting Laslo to send a message to the Russians, and he accepted death if it came from Peter but not from Simmons as he (Elias) had killed Peter's Dad. And he was incredibly loyal to his brothers, and they were to him. RIP Scarface :-(
I noticed that too, another interesting bit is that the very next episode seems to be a loose retelling of the Count of Monte Cristo. Man long though dead returns to get his revenge and reunites with long lost love.
At the time I first watched this show, I only knew Enrico Colantoni from Just Shoot Me. After seeing his character there and now as Elias, I get pretty hyped when I see his name in a credit.
Like I was already Team POI after the first episode but the Elias arch was just brilliant! As I rewatch, I really see how much earlier his arch was introduced and also Root’s… The level of brilliance is/was remarketable!
He was even hinted at in episode 3 when the army ring of thieves stole evidence from the Police Locker/Lock Up. The name on the box says Elias, M. When the Master Sergeant arranges for the other army guys to be killed after the job, he's shown giving the evidence to an unknown boss (implied to be Elias). The MS demands payment and the scene cuts. Reese eventually finds that Elias killed him. Given what we learn about Elias later, I'd imagine Elias was angry that the MS betrayed army loyalty and sacrificed his own men for profit. Elias still has a code despite being a villain, and it appears he's not a fan of people whose attitudes change with the wind.
yeah it was obvious they were trying to make parallels between Elias and Dominic which ofcourse culminates into the eventual elias vs Dominic storyline, but Dominic just wasn't as well written as a character I don't think. the actor who portrayed him was fine but none of the stuff they had Dominic do ever seemed truthfully as clever as they made it seem in the show.
Honestly I should have seen the reveal coming all the signs were there but somehow i missed them. But then they reveal that he is Elia jaw dropped. I also like the fact that the actor with Carter was in Geico advertisements., Finally how fantastic of an actor is Enrico Colantoni? I mean the first thing I ever saw him in was Just Shoot Me and he was very funny in it. Until person of interest I never realized how good is dramatic acting chops are.
He was hilarious as an alien in Galaxy Quest. He was also in Flashpoint, which was a drama about a special forces team. He's a very versatile actor and he played Elias perfectly.
Nah. They were just planning to have a shootout where John has Elias at a disadvantage and then... Elias: I must admit, you are a better shooter than me. John: Then why are you smiling? Elias: Because I'm not left-handed [switches gun to right hand].
Does anyone know the name of the song that started being played in the last few moments of this clip? This clip doesn't last long enough to get to the words, but I remember watching the show and really liking the song.
POI has a very unique and interesting plot, putting a top tie field agent and an inteligence into local criminals without context. Elias had the pottential to be a good counterpart against protagonists. He is not bound by morality and law. He has a better awareness about circumstances. He has a big picture, organizing criminals. What he does is much more efficient and critical. He could be Samaritan with keeping their fundamental plot alive. They did a good job to making the character what he is like but they should have put much more effort to explain why he is wrong for society.
I loved the first 2 seasons. Then it got weird. They killed carter and made her a spur of the moment love interest, and this weird Root came in and computer wars happened. Weird.
This was the moment that Person of Interest transformed from yet another procedural to a brilliant and smart show. Elias played both John and us, the viewers, perfectly. exactly. this scene here just hooked me to the series at the time.
Wasnt the only time they pulled that. Watch the episode: Sotto Voce
it was good how they had him act all weak and innocent until this scene (the end)
It was also a reveal of just how far ahead the machine was in terms of directing Harold and John to the save the lives necessary to prepare for, survive and eventually defeat Samaritan. “I thought about killing you John. But then I realized that would seem ungrateful. Besides, how do you kill someone so talented?”
Well, Elias did say he had respect for John. He may be a villain, but he still has standards.

Same, but it was good they ended it where they did. Better that then to become a parody of itself after 5 more seasons.
The whole show had interesting characters.

yep the only times they're involved is when john goes to him
2:20 This is Person of Interest in a nutshell
Yeah the best part of the show was how each POI could be either a victim or a perpetrator
Elias once Samaritan took over.
To me this is STILL one of the best twists in TV history. I was totally floored when this was revealed. Then they did it again with Roots reveal.
This was a brilliant reveal.
After all these years and I say it again and I will say it always: when will drama makers make a legendary series like this again?
Waiting suggestions
Agreed.
Never.
about 2 years late but mr robot looks pretty cool!

Agreed. The overarching stories took over the last couple of seasons. It was still fun, but the first three seasons were the pinnacle of the show imo.
This is when I really fell in love with this show, such an amazing episode.

With Elias, he does everything for a reason - and sometimes those reasons are multi-faceted. He's one of the most fascinating vilain characters on POI. @@mish375 agreed. Elias sees himself as a necessary evil a counterpoint to the corrupt police and the ultra violent gangs that existed before him.

I really liked this show from the beginning but I think this was the moment I knew I loved it.
I like the scene where Elias student was reading #The Count Of Monte Cristo. Jim (Reese played #Edmond Dante’s 2002 version)
I noticed that too, another interesting bit is that the very next episode seems to be a loose retelling of the Count of Monte Cristo. Man long though dead returns to get his revenge and reunites with long lost love.
@@mattparsons2045 Good insight I totally missed that and The Counte Of Monte Cristo is my favorite book of all time.
this was a great reveal thinking that elias the whole time was a good innocent man, when he was the mastermind crime boss

Almost the same thing happened with Shaw and Dominic. Except John was saving Elias and Shaw was holding Dominic as hostage or something.

when a word ends in S you don't add a second s for a possessive apostrophe. it should be Elias' not Elias's
No, the usage there is correct. The second S is added for modern people. The no second apostrophe is for Biblical references.
