Wow ok, I wanna check this one out!! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions so fast buddy! I really appreciate that!! I'll keep in touch with you on this one!! Merry Christmas brada!!
I just found that I have one of these which sat unused for over five years. It's very smooth. What stopped me from using it was that when it arrived I thought it was _way_ to small to use for anything when fishing in the surf on Island Beach State Park. I'm going to pair it with a 6'6" Berkeley rod and use it for trout fishing in upstate Pennsylvania. The Stradic C5000XG looks and feels like an excellent quality reel. I was surprised to see what I paid this reel. I believe that it will adapt easily to trout streams and wider creeks.
Wow, i did this review awhile ago. What's left are all boxed at the moment. I'm using all Okuma gear now. But from what you said you intend for it you'll be ok. Thanks for writing me & watching my channel:)
@@ScubaChris I'm with Penn 750 Long Cast reels for plugging these days. Two Shimano Bait Runners and Okuma Bait Runner types but I do less bait fishing now than at any time in the past 60 years. That takes me back to age five and I believe my father had me fishing with him before I turned three. It really got under my skin.
Thanks Chris but I already have a Daiwa Catalina for offshore pelagics.....just looking for a lightweight, newer, technology loaded spinner for light- med s/w service. I will just pick up a Stradic 5k and give it a whirl. It should be up to the task as it is rated for up to 24lbs of drag and I will only be using 20-30 leader on it. I have the Catalina for heavier applications.
Actually I was just looking for a nice 4k spinner to fish lures inshore and offshore for smaller pelagics under 20lbs. i am in San Diego, CA. Thanks for all your advice!
Small pelagics? Vintage wise when i jig from my boat at buoys i love & still use my old Penn 850SS. Never targeted pelagics with the newer spinners. So i just looked at my "carbon fiber jungle" & of all the newer spinners i see only 2 solid choices for what you want to do. The best all around is my Shimano Twin Powers. Basically it's a Stella with less seals & bearings in comparison. Next is the Cabo. Cabo's have tremendous "max power" ratings and can handle the occasional larger strike. Good luck:)
Aloha Chris. Thank you for taking the time to make these informative videos! I live here on Kauai and am good friends with Joe Olivas! I have taken his advice on a GT set up, Fenwick HMG and Spheros 6k. Love the set up! I am now looking for a Whipping set up for targeting Moi and Papio! At this time I have a Tica 10'6 med rod and a Fenwick 8'6 med heavy. I'm looking for the best reel for these application. I'm thinking you're going to recommend one of two Stradic models! But with the information I've given you, what would you go with? Thanks so much for your time!!
Aloha Dan, Actually i do have a serious recommendation. Shimano Ultegra. I've been using the CI4 5500 model. Great castability, smooth, powerful retrieval rate & well balanced. The line layering system creates far casting distances. I'm impressed by the distance i get. Got a new 10K model that i'll be testing next.
I like this reel, what I don't like are the small screws they put on the bail arms. After a few fish is starts to loosen up. I know people say a thin bail wire is no problem, but it's so thin you drop it or if it happens to fall over it will bend. Shimano makes great reels, but in my opinion they too lite and not durable enough. if they would make smaller reels more durable man I buy a bunch of them.
+Anthony Sanchez When i buy reels for whipping my no#1 main concern over all other factors is weight. If i need more line i go braid, longer casting distance again lighter braid for less air resistance and/or longer rod, power/max drag can be compensated by palming/fingering the spool. I do have a Shimano 5K Twin Powers with 15lb braid for whipping as well, but that's my "power whipping combo" that limits my usage time due to the weight. I like going out all day or night to whip non-stop. And yes, i'm a strong guy but constant whipping for hours takes it's toll. Plus i survived a shark attack & the resulting bends that put me down for months with my right side not wanting to "talk" with my left side. That's why i gave-up fishing & bowling for 20yrs. But now i'm back in both. To be honest with all the usage i put on my equipment i never had to open them up for repairs. I do open them up for cleaning & greasing after 6 outings. I used to take apart my old Penn's & Mitchells back in the day but now i look at the insides & figure i'll use them till i'm either tired of the or it'll wear out and i'll just get another. Still have my Mitchells & my Atlarpacs & Saber rods and they still all work. I'm always wanting to try new equipment. First because i want to see & feel the newer technologies. Second is to do my video reviews and reports. But i guess i do need to start learning how to start servicing my own gear. It'll make me a better all around angler with that added knowledge. Obviously you are because of your accessment of the thin bail wire & screws. Good observation that should be forwarded to Shimano for their next generation of Stradics.
I see your point chris whipping with a lite reel is more enjoyable. I see you and other guys from the Islands whipping and man talk about skills. Anyone can cast a lure, but landing a fish is easier said than done. I'm glad you decided to do the things you love once again, how big was the shark?
Despite having so much extras, Shimano is close to double the price of other reels in the same class, conversely however, the line capacity is one or two size smaller than other brands, for example the Stradic 5000 is equivalent to Daiwa BG 3500, it feels like getting robbed paying for a 5000 at double the price but getting a 3500, otherwise it is a great reel
There are great reels out there. Penn, Daiwa, Van Stalh, etc. The 1 constant i've found buying & using fixed spools is that if you want a quality product to last, you need to pay the price. Of course the reel will only perform correctly if you keep up on basic maintenance. I didn't want to pay 700 for a Stella for whipping, so i got a Twin Powers (basically a Stradic on steroids) for 400. I truly love my TP. But every EVERY cheapo reel i've ever bought i either sold or gave away within a year. Now Shimano's are expensive compared to most, like Penn of similar size. To me the deciding factor will be what brand you feel feels right for you. For me it was Mitchell & Penn. But i learned for prolonged whipping sessions that Penn's heavier weight caused arm fatigue. In comparison i can use a Stradic 3K all day or night with no fatigue. On my boat i jig using Penn because the internals are better suited to pull in shibis at the buoys. Unfortunately i'm not in a position to sample all the reels out there. For a consumer i think watching vids & listening to reviews will help choosing the right brand/model for you.
You're absolutely right, I think all Penn, Daiwa and Shimano are of high quality class and weight do play a major factor. However, I can buy say a Daiwa 3500 which weight as much as a Shimano 5000 at a much cheaper price for something light and still buy a Penn 5000 for the heavy duty.
Ken, there's no wrong answer here. You use what you feel fits you as an angler. Only you know your style, the species you target & topography of your locations. A lot also depends on your budget. For me i tend to fish for long periods & a lighter reel is key for what i do. The only "bad" quality reels i've used came out of China-the really cheap ones.
I'm stuck between a Spheros 5k and New Stradic 5k. Looking for a light whipping setup, that wont get tired of. Mostly whipping for moi/papio and casting distance. Mostly using grubs/flys. I know joe mention the spheros has more water protection, due to saltwater damage. From your reviews and field test. What would you consider? Mahalo!
I have both the Spheros & Stradic. If you were plugging i'd say go with the Spheros, if you're whipping i'd say the Stradic. Love my 5K Stradic for whipping! I have 15# braid on it & 10# braid on my 4K Stradic.
Thanks for your reply! What rod would you recommend for the stradic 5k? Mostly wanna get one locally, to avoid shipping damage. I'm on kauai, so limited choices. Probably Fenwick, Hawaiian Angler, penn, nitro & shimano in our local shop. Probably get a 6k spheros later. Mostly use the stradic to cast grubs, and spheros some light plugging. Or a versatile rod to do both, just to switch reels.
Should I pick this reel up? Always wanted to try a Shimano brand reel. Always been. Daiwa guy. Or should I wait for the 2018 stradic? For plugging and whipping
You should use whatever fits your style of fishing. I like light reels for continued usage so it's Shimano for me. There's no right or wrong answer here. Use what best suits your style, the fish you target & what your budget can handle. For me it's Shimano.
Chris, I am lookin at maybe buying this reel bot wondering........ Now that you've used this reel for a while.....what do you think of it now? Same? Still impressed? Gerry from San Diego, CA
Ok, for heavy whipping i love it! Plugging i prefer the Spheros because of the lower retrieval ratio. Light whipping i use the Stradic 3K. What were you thinking of? And using what type of rod?
Chris, is there a big difference in size between the Stratic 4000 and 5000? Which one would you recommend for jigging with a 6'6" medium heavy kayak rod?
I'm too poor to afford a Stella. Lol. But have at least 11 current projects that i need to video but downloaded 2 new video programs but taking awhile to learn them.
That's true. I only use some of my gear once or twice for a review, then either sell it cheap or give it away to friends. Since i buy everything cost plus and the used gear don't looked used either, that person basically gets equipment at or below dealer's cost and scores $20-$40 of line as well. Why would anyone ever want great deals like that?
Depends on the rod you have & the type of fishing you plan to do. For me going light whipping at night i use the 3K CI4 with 8lb mono for Akule & Aweoweo. I need a light set-up for whipping all night so i don't get arm fatigued. During the day i use a 5K FK with braid for light plugging or a 3K FK with braid for light whipping.
+Jerome David Yes i do. I actually use the Twin Powers for deeper water areas that has shown me bigger fish strikes. That 5K Twin Powers s a powerful reel! On the equally strong 10'6" TICA it's a perfect match. The drawback to this combo is continued usage over a period of time. In other words the weight starts becoming an issue. Day or night i'm limited in continued usage due to arm/shoulder fatigue. This new set-up is much lighter! I'm pairing the 5K Stradic with a longer but much lighter Okuma 12' Hawaiian Custom rod (whips farther then the 10' TICA). If i want to go out for a few hours of whipping i'll bring the Twin Powers set-up. If i want to whip all day or night it's going to be the Stradic 5K with the Hawaiian Custom. Also i can use my much lighter surface plugs on both.
Aloha Chris I'm in a big debate with myself. I've been reading up on the stradic and the spheros but i still don't know which to get so hopefully you can help me, im looking for a reel that I want to use for plugging with the lures being in the range of 1.5 to 3 oz such as mark whites, outbluff and gt ice creams as well as whipping flies with hammer bombs and water bubbles. Scuba Chris oh ok. I see. Yes i was referring to the CI4's. Ill go with the one u review because it can take 300 yards that was a selling point too for me. Ill check my local fishing store here on maui if they have it still. Thanks chris.
I can barely afford what i have now. Lol. You are quite brilliant my friend
I will always come to your site for reviews
GREAT ! ! !
I really like your tackle videos! You obviously do your research (unlike many) and I like to see a reel "in the hand" to judge its size.
Hawaii Life. You live in a beautiful island. I dive there a lot with my boat and found quite a few Ulua holes, 1 was only 10ft from shore!
You have giant gts only ten feet from shore? WE GO OFFSHORE AND CATCH MIDGETS IF WERE LUCKY!
I found a massive Ulua house on Maui that had a 20ft drop 10ft from shore with a cave at the bottom and a top escape hole. Filled with Ulua.
I just found that I have one of these which sat unused for over five years. It's very smooth. just like joe olivas even gotta show about the reels.good to know info.

I paired it with the 12' Okuma Hawaiian Custom. A nice light match.
Chris, have you ever noticed that the roller of this reel, damages your braid line? Or noise from the inside of the bearing. Thanks.
Sorry Nick, i haven't noticed this.

Hi, Chris what's your thoughts for surf fishing . Thanks 🎣
For Med rigs should be ok. What type of rod were you thinking of using?
Chris, is there a big difference in size between the Stratic 4000 and 5000? Which one would you recommend for jigging with a 6'6" medium heavy kayak rod?
To be honest i'm unfamiliar with Kayak style rods. But i'll say the 5K. More yardage. I use my 5K on a 10'6" TICA for throwing metal.
what is next Chris Stella 6000HG? OR VS150 more lighter. thanks.
I'm too poor to afford a Stella. Lol. But have at least 11 current projects that i need to video but downloaded 2 new video programs but taking awhile to learn them.
Do u have any old rod and reel combos I can buy
+alijah bertelmann
Sorry, i gave away all my older rigs (except my Atlar & Sabre) and bought all new rigs.
k thanks
That's true. I only use some of my gear once or twice for a review, then either sell it cheap or give it away to friends. Would you rather prefer to use the FK or the ci4+ for whipping hammer bombs? Which stradic is a better buy?
Depends on the rod you have & the type of fishing you plan to do. For me going light whipping at night i use the 3K CI4 with 8lb mono for Akule & Aweoweo. I need a light set-up for whipping all night so i don't get arm fatigued. During the day i use a 5K FK with braid for light plugging or a 3K FK with braid for light whipping.
Do u use your twin power anymore?
+Jerome David
Yes i do.
+Scuba Chris hey would u want to sell me your twin power lmk
+Jerome David
It's next to my pillow when i go to bed at night. It is!
So my question to you is which of these 2 do you think will suit me more better for my fishing style and also last longer in terms of maintenance.
Given the parameters i'd say the Shimano Spheros over the Stradic for plugging. For 8-11ft rods the 6K works great for me using 50lb braid. Good luck!
Howzit chris. I looked on ebay and compared the price of the 5k vs the 4k. Why is the 4k a lot more pricey then the 4k?
I think i know what you meant. On eBay first check to see if the unit is new or used. Then the year or country it was released in. Finally the model#. Since you didn't send me a link i can't check on this. If it still doesn't match-up send me the links. Thanks for watching my vids:)
Oops sorry for my question. But yea the 5k is less then the 4k. The 5k on ebay brand new is 202 much less then the 4k.
Any i have a 10'9 and was in the market for a shimano reel. I like the power ball type handle on the 5k im going to us 15-25 braid for whipping. What you suggest?
It has to be "balanced". For what you have most Shimano 5K spinners would be ok. Yes, the 5K Stradic would be a good match. Also the Spheros, Saragosa, Twin Powers & Stella. I have all i mentioned minus the Stella. Working my way out of poverty to get one. lol
The 4K CI4's are much more because their lighter. Is this what you're referring to? Also the newer models will be more expensive then the older ones. Also be aware of the shipping charges if from Japan/Malaysia.
Scuba Chris oh ok. I see. Yes i was referring to the CI4's. Ill go with the one u review because it can take 300 yards that was a selling point too for me. Ill check my local fishing store here on maui if they have it still. Thanks chris.
you are not too poor Chris you can afford twin power 5000 also you can stella too lol
I can barely afford what i have now. Lol. I turned down several pro-staffer positions because i don't like how the contracts read (can't use any other gear besides what is sent to me) and (i need to visibly highlight those products monthly with written progress reports). The companies i accepted allowed me to purchase gear at wholesale but allowed to use any gear brands that i have to.
Hey Chris, just got this reel and having problems tucking the line under the tab due to a plastic insert. Any thoughts or tips? Mahalos!
Plastic insert? The only tab i remembered was the removeable tab on the handle?
Can you perhaps help me ;
Do you recommend the ci4+ range
Or the fk range ?
Durability and strength is what I am pondering before i purchase ci4+ reels
Or fk reels .
I will fish salt and fresh water !
At first i was using all CI4's since i needed strong but light-weight spinners for whipping all night with no arm fatigue. They are more expensive then the FK's.
