Sir I love your videos on electricity. Please can you make video wiring an ATS using magnetic contactors with a relay and red light ti I dicate grid ON and blue light to indicate Gen ON. If possible,do it on the single phase and three phase. Thanks
Major error. The breakers are wired wrong. With the lettering right side up, the power comes in from the top and out the bottom. The line is always on the switch side of the breaker while the thermal trip is to be on the Load side. Many of the breakers will even be marked as to Line on top and Load on the bottom.
@@xsureface You do need to follow this even with AC. The breakers are designed to kill power in the breaker with the breaker open. Not with power still being on on the switch part of the breaker or the thermal trip. You can have a short in the breaker and you would still have power supplied to the other parts of it unless the contact side is where the line comes in. It also has to due with the arc path when the breaker opens under load. The blink breakers are clearly marked as to line in is at the top as that is where the contact is.
My question is where does the generator get the signal to start automatically, and how is it started? Is the generator started manually? I'm puzzled by the two questions!
The breaker only sees the short circuit current for which it is designed through its output, in this diagram the lower terminals. Everything is OK until that part of the scheme
Look like a portable generator in the drawing. I know a standby generator will power up and automatically switch once the voltage and frequency is stable. how does the portable accomplish that please?
its good explanation but there is no way a generator will work automatic hence you add controo cable to triger the generator switch. meaning ignation for the generator must have to be controller through timer method
My question is, the N side of my switch the UN light is on but the NON light is not and when i turn on my generator the R side both lights are on but on the N side only one and it hum like hell, what is the cause of this please.
Does the ATS turns on the generator to make it automatic? When you look at the the single pole breaker and the generator there is a need to be turned on when grid power is off
Thats what i asked my self ...because even without a breaker or isolator on generator manually you have to get up turn it to start ...i think he should have used inveter instant ... Inveter with solar array and battries this automatically they on 24/7
I cannot find an automatic switch that handles DC to DC 48 v array 100 amps I am not using an inverter, I have two 48v solar battery array, I want to use one as a back up, the only item I have hooked to it is connected directly to the MPPT charger. I would like to switch automatically one battery power bank to another when the voltage drop, the switch’s I found don’t handle 100amp input. Any suggestions how to find? I don’t want inverters at all, it would not be necessary for my application, it would only add problems. Thank you
Is it not possible to provide a modified sine wave inverter for source B? When the inverter is turned on, there is a loud noise. (when source A is not set to Auto) Is that because of modified sine wave? Normal ceb power is given to Source A. When both Source A and B are given, when A is missing, Auto will come to B. But when source B is turned off and ceb power is lost, when source B is turned on, source B does not fall in auto, there is a loud noise. Why is this happening? Pure sine wave will be fine?
Australian electricians beware. You do NOT switch the neutral, as they have on this animation, on an Australian installation. Refer to AS/NZS 3000 for guidance.
In some cases, you do have to switch a Neutral. There are some inverters that the Neutral is not really a Neutral and if you wire them in without killing the house Neutral, you will blow up the inverter.
@@gravelydon7072 if you have a solar inverter, you need to separate that from the load on the ats for this reason. I am a licenced electrician, and did this one own installation. If you read the relevant section of AS/ NZS 3000, the opening statements, in bold, state you will not switch the neutral. Period.
@@ralphblundell9479 As I can't access those standards on the web, I will have to take your word for it. Under the NEC in the US, we are allowed to stitch Neutrals as long as the Breaker or Switch opens all of the connections at the same time on a breaker or opens all of the connections for the Lines and Neutrals on each side of an ATS for the incoming powers to a load. Example is 430.105: “One pole of the disconnecting means shall be permitted to disconnect a permanently grounded conductor, provided the disconnecting means is designed so that the pole in the grounded conductor cannot be opened without simultaneously disconnecting all conductors of the circuit.” As some models of inverters have problems with grounded systems on 120Volt systems, I built my ATS as a unit with switched Lines, Neutrals and Grounds. My current inverter does not have that problem but one of the backup ones does.
@@gravelydon7072 OK, I thought we might be working from different sets of standards-- it is quite specific in our case. I'm assuming it is due to our MEN earthing system which is almost universally used in Australia apart from specialist applications such as underground mining. So, we are both correct, within our own applications.
@@ralphblundell9479 No MENS type system here as our transformer feeds us alone and the Neutral comes from the center tap on the transformer. Same applies to the inverter and the generator. The generator shares the Neutral to ground bond of the house and the ground rod. The inverter can share the same but also has its own ground and ground rod as the two can operate independently. Takes a 4 wire cable from the shed to either of the three transfer switches. The whole house transfer switch ( 200 Amp fused but able to be used with up to 600 Amp ( and 3 phase if the extra contacts were installed ) ) also serves as a main disconnect. There is another transfer switch inside the house that allows use of the emergency circuits. That can be fed by a generator/inverter even while the whole house one is turned off. the third is the ATS one which only operates on 120V for a refrigerator and/or a one tube A/C. The ATS will soon be removed as the newest inverter can act as an UPS and/or an ATS on its own.

where does the black and green arrow pointing up go? great video by the way
Black is return, and green I assume is ground since it is the third wire and color coded green.
A wiring commentary would be helpful
what is the green part that can fit 4 wires ?
Great where do i get this as switch on the video?
Very nice video, but where the black line from the top of breaker go with pill up beside earth line green?
Muy bueno
Admittedly I am an electrical novice however where does the ground wire go?
It goes to the ground bus bar in the electrical panel. The black goes to the return bus bar Ina 120 volts circuit.
Can this ATS send a start signal to the generator?
It can bi able to put a not the same voltage, example in the normal power I put a 220v, and in the reserve power is 12v?
