How can I fix a bad approach? I know how my feet should be placed when making an approach and I can easily do it without a ball, but as soon as I have to adapt and position to a ball I start just doing whatever with my feet. I noticed it first when viewing footage of my team in a game and observing myself. I then found out that I even do it, when I do a top spin serve.

I advice make your approach, jump but only catch your ball with both hands overhead. Focus on approach and film yourself. Repeat it 😉👍

Firstly, where are you starting your approach? Are you starting way outside to the left? Are you starting on the sideline and coming straight in? Or are you using an inside out approach?

I had this problem and I fixed it by intentionally thinking about what my approach should be. Whether doing practice hits or even in game I would think “1, 2, 3, 4-5” (I did 5 step approaches) or intentionally thinking “raise both my arms back and up” or “flick my wrist!” No need to do everything at the same time; just think about each individual piece at a time (ie steps, distance, swing, etc). Also no need to rush yourself when hitting. If you feel that you’re going too quick and can’t concentrate on your approach then ask the setter to make the set higher for you so you can be intentional.

@@relaesien If you can time a 5 step approach, more power to you! A 5 step could be useful if you find yourself having to start your approach farther back than usual.
Look where Karch started on this approach/hit, and how far back he was. Granted he took a side step to get into position for a 3 step approach but the concept is the same.
Also notice how he took an inside out approach. I personally like those approaches better than the outside in. You have a wider hitting window with an inside out or straight up the sideline approach.

Either be tall, or jump higher than you usually do otherwise deep court shots is your friend when attacking. Wrist snaps can help alot when you can jump fairly high

How would I know to start my approach for example I would get a good set high and comfortable for me but I come in too late and it’s only on late of course (start your approach faster) I get that but telling me that alone isn’t helping me at all

This will sound funny but I would actually advise to slow down your beginning approach. Slowing down will allow you to look and see if you need to change your direction, or if you need to go slowly or faster into your approach. I have buddies of mine who can reach about a foot above the net and they all start their approach by walking to the net, and then speeding up when they see their timing. Also it comes overtime you will be able to tell when you need to go faster or slower to match a ball’s timing. Also communicate with your setter on how high you want your set. I had this problem too and these were the things I found to help my timing spiking.

Do players in division 2 or 3 play volleyball as part time ?

The first mistake I see, and have been seeing is that (for 13s and 93s...outside sets), apparently outside and right side hitters (save for Anderson and Zaytsev) do not know how to hit sideline shots.
Which is my first point, what the fuck is the deal with the outside in approaches? Even Karch fucking Kiraly has a video showing a STRAIGHT IN approach (follow the sideline) that allows for either an angle or line power shot. Why do I routinely see OHs coming in almost parallel to the net, swing angle at a block that is blocking angle and sharp angle, and at least 3 feet of open line?
And when the hitter does hit line, it's a no-power (arm-punchesque) cross body swing that is the embodiment of poor form.
Can someone explain that one w/o crying about, 'tHeRE pr0Ez BrO. tHEy Kn03 Wut ThuR dOIN!'

Notice their approaches are straight in, right up the sideline, NOT outside in, parallel to the net. If I could pick anyone on this planet to teach me how to hit outside, it would be Mr. Kiraly, one of the best OHs in vball history.

Another quicker video of Karch himself demonstrating. Not only does he go straight in, he corrects one of the girls whose approach was too far out.
Hitters are only closing off a huge section of usable court when they come in parallel to the net and swing sharp angle.
