he died in 2017 at the age of 68.
his career didnt really take off until he was in his 50s, quite sad since this is what he wanted to do since he was young.

Charles happened to be a very good friend of mine, he played a veterans festival for me in Waterbury Connecticut. His brother was a veteran and he was passionate about helping them. This world is going up in flames, was the song that put him on the map. You are correct about his James Brown style of singing, actually he was known as the worlds greatest James Brown impersonator, he went as black velvet. He actually sang at James Brown’s funeral. He didn’t get his first critically acclaimed album until he was in his 60s and Rolling Stone noticed it as one of the top albums of the year. He had a Netflix documentary called soul of America. He had a very very very trying life but he made it through it with his smile and his charisma, he was one of the kindest men I ever met. Unfortunately we’ve recently lost him to cancer about 3 1/2 years ago. I will always be blessed that I had him as a friend.

He was a James Brown impersonator for years, so you’re spot on. You absolutely need to listen to “why is it so hard” live at SXSW. It’s the show that really launched his career.

I saw him in Glastonbury a few years ago. It was kind of by chance, I stood there and cried, I'd never had it before, his voice was just so beautiful. He was part of a mixed bill, so many amazing musicians but he still managed to stand out. I fell very privileged to have seen him live. One of a kind. RIP.

He has a great documentary that's worth checking out as his story is pretty insane considering his debut album didn't come out until he was already 63 in 2011 I believe then finally was appreciated on a grand scale as an artist but sadly passed only 5 years later. It also shows just how much he sacrificed and absolutely adored his Mother to make sure she lived as well as he could possibly help provide later in her life which adds another entire layer to this track once you see that.

I had the pleasure of seeing him perform this live in 2015 when he came to my city. It was an outdoor night performance in the early summer. I had no idea who this guy was but my sister told me I had to see him perform. And I was blown away immediately. It's unfair his time in the spotlight was so brief. Thanks for bringing back some good memories.

    His story is very impactful.
We discovered his music only a year or two before he passed and played it on the daily inside our barbershop. Lived with his mother and struggled financially trying to make it in music most of his life until into his 60’s. It was a sad day in the barbershop when he passed.
He has also said in multiple interviews that he believed Ozzy Osborn dreamed of being a Soul Singer based on the way he wrote and structured his lyrics. It’s beautiful.

I've heard this more than a few times, it honestly just gets better every time I hear it. Apart from how beautiful a rendition this is the overwhelming message here is that music, singing in particular is about as honest, soulful and pure an expression of the human condition as there is. That music transcends all boundaries of culture, class, color or anything else. This man covering this song in a lot of ways represents a coming full circle of genre and musical diversity. Sabbath grew out of the heavily blues influenced era of prototypical British heavy metal alongside Led Zeppelin, Cream, the Yardbirds etc. To take black originated music that was born out of songs and gospel hymns sung on plantations by slaves and their descendants, modify that to express their own struggles in the blue collar inner cities of Englands steel and coal towns and question the validity of the world around, then have that reflected back again by an artist like this.....
    That's beautiful.

He hadn't taken any liberties with the lyrics at the point you said that (at the end of the first verse). The one and only thing he phrased differently than Ozzy at that point was "I *HAVE* lost the best friend that I ever had" (Ozzy sings, " *I'VE* lost the best friend"...so... one VERY minute change). He DID start improvising a bit AFTER that point, though.

    Charles Bradley was simply amazing!
He should have been more well known! I mean to release his debut record at 62-years old is just a travesty. Most of his videos are awesome, but I will suggest 'Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires - Ain't It A Sin (Live on KEXP)' or the official video of 'Ain't It A Sin' as great choices!
ETA: There is also a great documentary about his fairly tragic life.... Charles Bradley: Soul of America.

Feedback for you. You completely missed the point of this performance. Guy spilling his guts and you’re harping on accurate lyrics and qualifying him by saying no complaints. Secondly, why do guys your age do that thing where you say OK in a patronizing way like you’re the one approving it. Isn’t that for 18 year olds?
Reaction people try out different music to bring in fans of that artist. Have some respect
