The feedback on this video has been great from Calo speakers of varying degrees from all over as well as non-Chicanos. Some have disagreed with the meanings I put out, no hay pedo, but I guess I should've emphasized even more how"Context" plays a huge role in communication in any language. There are more meanings than the ones I put out, more than time allowed. I did point out the example of "Orale" and there are even way more than the ones I mentioned there. I left out "Chingadera" which can mean almost anything, sort of like "Wachamacallit" or "Da Kine" here in Hawaii. Calo is very much like the Pidgin dialect often spoke here on the Islands. Both are a Hodgepodge of different influences and interpretations that are constantly evolving. Thanks again for your comments and support! - El Tecolote ~v~

I grew up talking like this from hanging around with the guys from the hood in the 80s and kept on using it in the 90s. Soon after people would trip on me and say why do I talk all cholo lol. It was my lingo. I still use it with certain people, but can't use it for everyone. Gracias for the cletcha.

Came here after listening to Kid Frost speaking about Caló. Learned that I knew a lot of Caló already but I knew it as Spanglish. Awesome to know it has an acual name. My tata spoke like this. It also has Nahuatl (the Aztec language) mixed in it besides English and Spanish. Thanks for educating me more on my culture.

Growing up as a Mexican in south Texas I know all of these words mostly from family and pop culture. Crazy how it’s just become part of the Spanglish vocabulary.

Yes, I've heard "He put el Dedo" (pointer finger) as in snitching on someone. I've also heard "Puso el Dedo" when the PRI controlled Mexico, as in, the last President picked the next President. Like I said, a lot of these words (in any language) depend on the context.

    Speaking in caló is cool.
I learned it based on context in the 1990s from people I hung out with. Soon I could understand Conejo and Brownsde songs.

Gringo who grew up in West Texas and mi novia's parent's noticed I spoke my spanish (I'm okay not great) slightly differently and brought up Pachuco to me. I had no idea that's what I learned. I'm learning a lot of history right now. Thank you for sharing stuff like this.
Also, with wey being "dude" and slang, I was also raised to be careful when saying because it could mean "a**hole". So, I only said it with the buddies, not elders or in formal spots. I've been learning more traditional Spanish, but it helps me understand why I am having to re-learn in so many ways.
I hope they don't think I'm a trouble maker. I mean, if they did, I guess I wouldn't be engaged with their daughter haha.

You Should Check Out The 1934 Recording Por Culpa De Una Trucha Por Netty Y Jesús Rodríguez. It's The Oldest Recording I've Heard That Uses Caló. I Have 3 78RPM Records From The Mid/Late 1940s With Caló. 2 Of Them Are By Trío Imperial (Lalo Guerrero) Being El Pachuco Y La Boda De Los Pachucos From 1946? & The Other 78 By Cuarteto Don Ramón Sr., Pseudonym For Don Tosti's Pachuco Boogie Boys Or Don Tosti Y Trío. This One Is From 1948 & My Most Prized 78 In My Collection. Tosti Was A Pachuco From El Paso & One Of Of Few Mexican-Americans To Play With The Big Bands In The 1940s. His Pachuco Boogie Was A Boogie-Woogie Blues With Scat.

Heres a little poem on Tepito with the og slang of mexico city
(If you are interested you should consult the book of Picardía mexicana by Armando Jiménez)
Veterana tapuja del ponedor carnal/ ahí tejabán mis seis de cocodrilo,/ a nombre de mis batos que son titipuchal,/ que aunque se afirmen todos la buchaca/ tú ya lo sábanas, paquetes d´hilo,/ se nos carga la bola en la carcacha/ y el corazón se chivatea todito sin mota, ni escamocha, sin Tepito.’

That's ignorace In the mexican, latino culture.even if you are black or latino-afro it displays ignorance, calling each other, stupid, ignorant black person every time they use that word, just like the word Chicano, or pocho, or wetbck, those words are racist discrimination words that many people embrace but actually are word created to disrespect and divide la raza, well we can also say the word mexicano is a racist word the roots of it are European, Spaniards that consider themselves mexican, everyone else was indios, later on the brown mestizos started to call themselves mexican to embrace and belong to the European Spanish mindset in other words soy mexicano is a mestizo that has simulated to the Spanish culture, and no longer claims to be indian it was a way to simulate and seperate our people..if you call a mexican idio many would take offense because they simulated to be mexican a European Spanish mentality.
