This is really cool stuff to see. I remember the unique 3 logo stuck around until about 1986 or 87. I know Jim Kelter, who was KMTV's sports director from 1973 through late 1978. I know in a couple of videos, there are some KMTV news opens mentioning his name and showing him on the set. If there are any sportscasts with him during this time period, would like to see them. Jim is a good guy and was a great sportscaster/play-by-play announcer.

I used to be the helicopter pilot for that station KMTV and the sister radio station KFAB owned by May Broadcasting. Chuck Roberts, Dale Hansen, Ken Chambers, weather was by Tony Cervantes. Fly am radio traffic for KFAB, then turned over to KMTV. Bob Runnels....so many others, Dr. Sanguinary show, had a blast. News director was Bill Wilson.

It was called "Creature Feature." There used to be some audio clips of the show on the net some years back, but now I can't remember where I found them.

John; I am a 47 year old Omaha native. Was Touching point always something like what is shown in the vid? That is, a song with random pics?

The KMTV Channel 3 in Omaha sign-off from 1978, marked the conclusion of its broadcast day as it was then affiliated with NBC from their old Studios at 2615 Farnam Street in Omaha, and then utilized microwaves KHU-77 and WDT-932. E.W. Scripps is the parent company of KMTV Channel 3, which is now a CBS Affiliate, and their Studios are currently located at 10714 Mockingbird Drive in Omaha.

It was around this time that the station moved to its current location at 107th and Mockingbird Drive; KMTV and WOW (Now WOWT) swapped network affiliations in 1956, with KMTV becoming an NBC affiliate and WOW becoming a CBS affiliate. On July 1, 1986, KMTV returned to CBS, while WOWT (as it has been known since 1975) returned to NBC.

No, this is not Omaha's MTV. The MTV in the call sign refers to May TeleVision of Shenandoah, Iowa; the call letters KMTV came about when the FCC denied the broadcaster permission to invoke a radio station in that area, KMA, in its call letters, as Shenandoah wasn't considered part of the Omaha TV market back in the late 1940s. From September 1, 1949 to 1956, it was an affiliate of CBS; for 30 years after that, it was Omaha's local NBC station; June 29, 1986 saw KMTV and WOWT revert to their original network affiliations. May Television has also owned ABC station KGUN 9 in Tucson since 1968; both stations were sold to Lee Enterprises (1986) then to Emmis Broadcasting (2005) then to Journal Broadcast Group (2005, the year Emmis divested itself of its TV division); they're now owned by the E.W. Scripps Company.
