- If you've been at the show, you've seen Ellen's warm-up guy, Tom Riles, getting the audience excited. He and his wife recently went through one of the toughest times of their lives when their newborn baby fought for her life... and today Ellen asked him to tell his heartwarming story.

I've never met a baby named Barbara, I thought adults named Barbara just appeared in life.
She is adorable though, so glad she made it through surgery and is doing good. Ellen is just flat out amazing.. ❤ I would love to work for her
I named my daughter Barbara as opposed to Brittany, Crystal, & Emily.
Lol this is funny to me because I thought the same thing. I only know adults named Barbra too. Like my mother's sister is named Barbra.

Ellen you are amazing. Helping people who go through tough time is incredible. You give them hope n strengths to carey on.
God-bless this woman in every way and capacity. Ellen come you are the inspiration that this world needs. Being a nurse for 20 years I see the best and the worst in people. Unfortunately the way health care has been going the last 2 decades and with all the other crab going hot in the world, you are definitely the good people need to see and they need to pay it forward. Which is what I try to do every day with my step kids. With my college boyfriend. His wife just died of cancer 2 years ago so I moved 5 States to take care of them. And taking care of these 3 kids has been nothing short of difficult. You have shown me how to smile every day, and pay a forward even of its through 3 kids common a morning husband. Perfect strangers my patience and everybody in my life especially my yes a dog. You're a wonderful human being and a really wish more people in the world were like you thank you for everything you do. You are an amazing person I just wish more people could see and do and be the way you are. When my little girl said I wanna be a pediatrician, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up, I am 41 soon to be in a few days… and I said I wanna be Ellen Phone. I asked why I said look at the good she does for the world she does more for this country than anybody ever could. At least for the people in it. You are a hero, and icon, and what this world needs

I JUST BAWLED MY EYES OUT!! AS A 20 YEAR OLD, I ACTUALLY REMEMBER WATCHING THIS EPISODE DURING THE SUMMER AND I'M SEEING IT NOW, 9 YEARS LATER AGAIN?? THIS IS THE BEST THING TO EVER HAPPEN TO ME AS I REMEMBER CRYING AS A LITTLE 11 YEAR OLD WHEN I WATCHED IT. Sending love and prayers from Minnesota !
Ellen is the most down to earth, humble person I have ever met. She loves to give things to people who have stuggled throughout the years selflessly. She is a true role model.

Our baby boy, born with a few serious birth defects, just had his 7th operation done today. We've been in the hospital for 165 days now. I know exactly what this family's been going through, and bless Ellen; they deserve this!
I started this channel for my first born Camara who died December 11th after celebrating her 9th birthday on Dec 7th. She loved your shows. Even when she went thru her sickle cell pains, she watched ur shows in bed on her smart phone. I just need her memory to be alive and i need steve harvey on this one two. My sister went through the same thing as a new born child moreover, she had downsyndrome but my family was strong and positive. To be honest, there are millions of people who have gone through the same thing but not everyone knows how to handle it. I feel that this is a great example to help out all those families who are or maybe will go through the same situation as the them.
I share a birthday with this baby and It makes me so happy to know this family gets to have many more birthdays to come with this child.

My nephew was born with a similar if not the same heart condition, he had to have open heart surgery too.
I just love him so much! I'm glad he's still with us three months later!
Ellen is a truly Angelic human......on Earth with us ALL!! Some just show their LOVE in other ways!! Especially, when they can afford too......and many who can? DONT!!
Loving this story! So happy to hear she's doing well and thriving! My husband is an adult Pediatric CV Patient who has had (3) open heart surgeries, the first at 9 mos. old and the most recent in 2005 when our daughter was just 10 weeks old - we are very thankful to our wonderful Drs at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC! Here's hoping that baby Barbara continues to thrive as my husband has!

Ahh she is beautiful...I had tears in my eyes watching this. I'm a mum to 2 beautiful girls and I don't know what I'd do if either of them had to go through what little Barbara did. So glad she is strong and healthy.

I love Ellen stories but this one especially touched me. My cousin was born with a heart defect and the story is exactly the same. Except my cousin passed away a month after his birth. I wish this baby a happy and healthy life especially for the babies who didn't get to live theirs!

Tom wears the same outfit every day! I've been to the show 4 times, my mom has gone 7 or 8 times, and he basically wears that outfit every time! :-)

my heart goses out out to that family, I know exactly what they are going through my cousins son was born with heart problems and had to undergo 10 hours of open heart surgery which seemed like a lifetime to everyone in the family. Glad to here the baby and the family are doing well god bless you all

To be honest I just started watching all your video ,you are such an amazing person..
I've had 4 openhearts also, I was givven CPR 5 times, had surgery 6 times on my legs and the doctors said as soon as I was born I have the tiniest chance of survival and here I am 14 years later.... Still living a healthy life!
i think all of ellens staff members see her as their GUARDIAN ANGEL.SHE COMES TO YOUR AID IN TIMES OF NEED DOSEN'T SHE??
you are missing the point... the point is ellen knows abt her staff's story and since her staff is the one always contributing to the show and everything, she is sharing his story to congratulate him on getting over his hard times and at the same time motivate other people who are in the same situation that there is hope....

It creates awareness. Yes a lot of babies are born like that. It lets people know the struggles that people go through.
When my son was born, he was not able to breath for a few minutes due to his umbilical cord chocking him and he didn't cry. I can never explain the feeling I had when I heard him cry for the first time hours after he was born. Now, I cherish every cries I hear from him :)
