hello, I also started surfing this year, it's normal that when you're used to using a high volume board, when you switch to a shortboard you feel a big difference and insecurity. I don't recommend you switch to shortboard now, but you can go go outside with your green board and catch waves before they break and know how to surf the wave wall, this shortboard has very little volume for your experience and has a very thin nose which makes it difficult to get on the wave, shortboard with a nose wider are easier to get on the waves, don't be discouraged, surfing is a sport that requires patience and calm with evolution, I've now transitioned to a 6.4 shortboard, with 38L volume, I still wanted to have some volume (for example the board has more width and consequently more area to give stability) as I still don't have that much experience and it has gone well. Sorry if my English is not very good, a hug from Portugal, the land of Nazaré, the biggest waves on the planet.
Not all shortboards are small, she obviously doesn’t know but FireWire is a great example for first short board. Lots of volume and short board ability
Just tried my 5'10 shortboard today in Malibu and it was a WOKROUT! I didn't catch an official wave, but I did get a lot of experience with paddling and balance. I managed to also semi-ride a wave on my knees once. Keep at it, we shall get better :)
Nah. It depends on the type and the volume of the short board. Also depends on the skill of the person. Some short boards are made for small waves, some for powerful ways, etc.
The wave has to basically be breakin* on you and gravity takes over which means a super quick pop up is must. Its impossible to catch green waves you catch with long board with short board. The design cant allow it. So you need to move down very slowly and gradually , couple inches at the time. Give it few months of gradual move down and after couple years you will get there.
i feel stupid when i go surfing i feel like a fish out of water lol i have only tried twice on the long board and get dumped more than anything but last time i got to my knees hay im nearlly 50 so im a late bloomer lol but love it all the same
Such a good video! And love your attitude!! I have always been nervous to shortboard, I've only ever ridden a long board but after seeing your video I so wanna give it a try!!!🏄♀️
While you did not 'catch a wave' this day, I think at your level and using a shortboard you did 'ok'. You were able to duck dive several times and get out to beyond were the waves are breaking and now need to concentrate on catching a wave. At this point you will probably find yourself 'paddeling all over the place' trying to catch various waves and probably missing a number of them because you are out of position, either now being able to move up fast enough to catch it as it is breaking or too far forward so it starts breaking behind you. At this point you may want to simply ride some of the white water into the beach after a wave has broken if you are too far forward. As time goes on, you will get much better predicting as to whether or not you are 'in position' for a coming wave and even start to be able to tell which wave in a set you want to go for. You may notice that you will also be able to tell ealier in the breaking wave if you are too far out to get a wave and simply let it pass by and wait for another one. The only thing you need to do is simply spend the time in the water and it will become second nature to you after a while.
Crawl, walk then run. On your own time. Don't let anyone push you. Have your own fun. Uncrowded spot is smart. Scoot up about 6 inches on that chip.Be safe.
1:16 I cringe at the thought of breaking any surfboard, especially since they are so expensive. I always thought it was kind of hard to break a board but it happens a lot more than one would think.
I know this is an older vid and likely you've made great progress. Surfing really is a total work out and for most takes time. I found I struggled thinking I'll never get better then hit a level doing ok. It's like a step function in the progress. I'll never be really good but just getting in the water and all that exercise trying does wonders physically and mentally. Stay stoked!
i am 5'4 and 15 ive been surfing alot this year and have been using a 7 foot longboard ive been doing really well and wanted to get a shortboard i am now making the change on a 5'8 board im very exicted but more nervous than anything
Good job with the duck dives. The waves you were going for weren’t big enough and didn’t have enough power to grab the board and push it forward (hence them pushing past you and you falling off the back of the wave. With that board, go for a little steeper, little bigger, unbroken wave. If you were a little further forward on that board that would have helped as well. You could also try a short board with a little more float (specifically in the front of the board) to help you catch smaller waves. A fish or fish hybrid might be a good fit for you. Keep at it!
Short board surfing is two different sports to long board, really and truly two different water sports. I could surf a long board iemediately when i started surfing ride the wall turn go left go right. Started short board a 5 10 low volume performance board it was like a new sport. I can now catch waves after alot alot alot of work and 3 years of only surfing during summer holidays.
You are just not on the trim of the board (balance point from to back), your weight is just too far back on the board to catch the waves, plus you need to paddle a lot harder to catch those broken mushy waves. Scrap the shortboard for a while, it is incredibly easy to get very put off surfing with the wrong board on the wrong waves.
Hi, I found coming off a foamie on to a 6,8ft 40vl short board almost impossible so I have now got a 7.2 ft 51vl mal style board and catching green waves with relative ease. As said above the short board's seem to be more for bigger steeper waves which I am not ready for, have fun 👌
hey thanks for the video! i stumbled across it recommended to me on my home page :) i’m a custom surf board artist and i’m working on my own piece atm but it’s on a 5’10 surfboard 🤣 and i’ve always surfed a 6’4 surfboard so now that i’ve seen your video, i think i’m gonna be less unhappy if i don’t manage to catch the waves on the first day out :D so thanks!
People out there, DO NOT do what this woman tried. She wasn't ready for this. I only hope that someone gave her some advice to get another board to transition from her foamy long board to that shortboard. A foamy is going to float so easily and catch waves really easily. A shortboard is an entirely different thing. It's going to be less stable, so even lying on it in flat water is not going to be as easy. Any change in position on your board, dipping a shoulder, lifting or lowering your head, is going to throw the board's balance off. And if you somehow catch a wave and stand, if your feet aren't positioned properly or if your upper body is off balance, if your head isn't in the right position, you're gonna fall. She makes the mistake of lying waaaay too far back on the board. I see at least a couple feet of board in front of her, with the nose poking out of the water several inches. Take a look at other POV surfing videos. You'll see very little of the board in front, and the nose barely above the water, even dipping below the surface on occasion. The board has to be as flat as possible on the wave to catch it. If you get enough speed and the wave is powerful enough, the board will cork up and begin to skim across the water, which is essentially what surfing is. If you're too far back, as she is, you're merely creating drag. The wave will wash underneath you and you will never get planing, which is what surfing is. Imagine skipping stones across the surface of a lake. You need a smooth stone, preferably shaped like a disk. When you throw it, you throw it sidearm to get the stone to go flat across the surface. If you throw it overhand, the rock will never skip. It's the same with surfing. You want that board to be FLAT on the water. Of course there's a bit of rocker, so the nose will stick up a bit, but basically, the board needs otherwise flat. Which means your body needs to be more forward, and you might need to hold your head higher. I sincerely hope this woman got a more appropriate board for her. She could set herself back years trying to ride this thing and possibly hurt herself. She could wreck her shoulders, and any orthopedist will tell you, shoulders are not easy to fix. And then some people will tell her that she needs to get out into bigger waves to ride a shortboard, which is true, because shortboards need the extra power. But if you're not ready for bigger waves, you're going to get seriously whacked out there. Plus, you're likely to get a bunch of other surfers really p-o'd at you for getting in the way.
Not really. The key to catching waves is positioning, board choice for the type of waves, and paddling technique. Kicking doesn’t really come into play unless you’re on a steeper wave and trying to avoid nose diving. Other than that kicking is only going to make you less stable
How tall are you man? Add about 2ft to your height and get that sized board if you’re new. If you’re 5’6 get a 7’6 board. It’s never bad to go a bit bigger too, the Longer the board the easier it’ll be to catch waves
Hi Tay! I agree to tfish comment. It really depends on how tall you are. I'm short (5'4) but I found at the beginning that riding an 8' board was so much easier! The first board I purchased was a 7'6, which is a little challenging than the 8'. You can downsize boards as you get more confident :) Hope that helps!
If you start with a shortboard then you will eventually get the hang of it instead of having to continue sizing down and adjusting to each size. I started with a 6’1 board and I’m 5’5” and it was hard at first but I’ve gotten the hang of it now and I don’t regret starting with a short board.

The short boards low volume means they only really catch steep unbroken waves, but keep at it!
It looks like these boards are foam, would that matter or help or is it simply all dependent on the volume?
Nah. It depends on the type and the volume of the short board. Also depends on the skill of the person. Some short boards are made for small waves, some for powerful ways, etc.

7:39 me for the past two years.
But one advice I can provide is you're clearly not far enough up the board.
I agree, too far back on the short board.

My heart dropped when the bag slammed down on the board with the fins facing down
