  • Deep water is the home of the fish. They use specific bottom features/contours called "structure" to become active. In this video, I go over the basic knowledge and tools you need to begin understanding fish and their behavior.

Michigan has hundreds of small but very deep inland lakes that become almost unfishable in the winter. In the spring and summer most are teeming with fish. Once the ice is on it's like all the fish left the planet. Fishermen work these little lakes from one end to the other and eventually quit in frustration. How to find fish in the winter is the most neglected topic online. A few of late have offered some insights into the matter, but 98% of our fishing videos are either to sell something or build a larger fan base. We need more simple explanations on exactly how to find fish in small, deep, lakes.

My man, this was great, but at 19:12 when you said it was 6 football fields, what? It was about 250 feet based on the legend. A football field is 300 feet.

Re those contour lines, what do the numbers tell? I’m assuming it’s depth, but when you said fishing from the bank required a 100 yard cast, and the bottom contour line read 99, that gave me reason to pause. You did a great job explaining how to fish with this topography map, but I needed you to go a little slower and define the features that we see on the map.

Black lines indicate an increase in depth. The closer the lines, the faster the depth change

Question. How do I know how far is the deeper area from the bank? I know closer liens are deep but if I’m fishing from the bank and looking at the bank and the actual lake how do I know how far it’s the deep to cast my rod?

This was so educational. I went out and tried to do what you're saying but I guess I'm one those folks that needs to see it in person. Unfortunately in my area of TN people are aholes and act like they don't want to even think about helping. Oh well good thing I enjoy fishing as much as catching. Thanks dude really. Help a lot.
