  • The 2024 Yamaha YZ450F won our 2024 450 MX Bike Shootout with a comfortable margin of victory over the rest of the machines thanks to a unbeatable powerplant, class-leading suspension, great balance, and exceptional handling. Following the shootout, Donn Maeda personalized the machine with a list of aftermarket parts that he felt improved the already great platform even more! Before the 2024 model gets exchanged for the 2025 YZ450F, SML test rider Pat Foster spun some laps on the project bike to see how each modification benefited the machine.

LACR rocks! And yes the hydraulic clutch is better than the cable plus zero adjustment needed

I love my Yamaha. Coming off a 21.5 fc450 RE, I couldn’t be happier. Yamaha made an amazing bike I don’t have to do much to to get it to get with the program. Phenomenal machine. Even bone stock.

Seat Concepts seat and double stacked Stegz Pegs are a must with Aceribis dessert tank. Makes the whole bike feel completely different under you. I've been reluctant to get aftermarket footpegs. Because I feel like my boots could get hung up too much, when I'm changing stances. I'm moving around almost constantly when I ride technical stuff. Same with grip tape on the frame. It would irritate me. I prefer the bike to feel controlled under me, but not tightly gripped in any way. Just allowing it to work and stay under me. Never fighting it. Arm pump comes from something in the setup being WAY off. Which makes you instinctively grip the bike harder, without even noticing. Once I got everything dialed, I could ride for 30-40min. at insane speeds, without any more fatigue than I had before at the 10-15 min. mark.

I don't know what that little blue thingy is next to the engine does for the suspension , but I want one !

    • @xsamas4915

That blue thingy is an engine mount, It really changes how bike feels, no bs here. When you put engine in frame it stiffenes it (that's why it is important to has it torqued properly and every bolt needs to be here). One time i've lost one of my engine mount bolt and bike felt wierd af, it was veeery woobly and unstable, felt completly different.
For example SXF has stiffer mounts then EXCF model, some people swap or change them to change flex of the frame, not a huge upgrade but it could be noticable.
Hope that will help you understand how everything works in harmony.

It's the rear shock remote reservoir. It's advantageous to have it there vs. on the shock so it doesn't get as hot from the exhaust and it's easier to access to work on w/out having to remove the shock.

@@xsamas4915 No, he's referring to the remote reservoir. One of the mtr mounts is blueish purple, the others are gold/copper colored.

What spring rates do you use ?

Does it help connecting both front and rear suspension together?

Nope! My best guess as an engineer is that it’s an extra nitrogen chamber (expansion from main chamber). The tube above is a quick connect to increase or decrease nitrogen pressure easily in pits. I’m guessing it has a tuneable valve and allows more volume at low speeds but then at high speed large shock movements the pressure can’t transfer quickly enough. Soft and supple but increased air spring pressure at big movements.
