When I was MUCH younger, I'd take a portable AM radio, and place it on my record player turntable. Sounded quite a lot, like Don Leslie's most famous invention. But, no woofer, or the asymmetric phase change that the horn and woofer of the Leslie speaker. (The horn switches speed MUCH more quickly than the woofer baffle.) steve
I have two 22H Leslies that I converted to two speed with the Hamptone two speed controller. Since both the upper and lower motors both hang in the same direction, the rotor and horns rotate in the same direction. I always wondered if the original two speed Leslies where the rotor and horns rotate in opposite directions (like yours) sound any different. It is probably not significant enough to make a difference, but sometimes I lie awake nights thinking about it.
AWESOME> I have a Leslie 45 with converter to make it 2speed like yours..whch makes it a 142! I have a B3 with a Leslie 122 and a Hammond M with a Leslie 45/142. I love playing, not nearly as good as you but I enjoy making music to the Lord
was there any adjustment for the time it takes for the Leslie to spool up and down. Seemed like that was the magic of the sound was to hear the long notes slowly decreasing the vibrato effect. The Hammond Tone cabinet can't make this sound of the Leslie. That's Why Mr Hammond hated Mr Leslie and even tried to make his organs "Leslie Proof"...the beginning of hacking, I guess.
Hello, Love the video. this organ and lesslie sound soooo good. I have a 1970 hammond b3 inmy church. it needs work. my lesslie ie a 122-A the problem is the mother board is bad(as i was told by my tech) and the bottom speaker turns constantly , it will stop now & then but mostly if just flys fast. what does it sound like to you Sir?
If the noise level rises/falls with the swell pedal, it's originating in the organ. If it's only affected by the volume control in the amp, it's located in the Leslie, almost certainly the can capacitor. Hmm...Have you installed the RC filter on the tone generator? I don't believe the CV's came with that pre-installed. That might help. Does the noise increase/decrease with the swell pedal?
I looked. The horn rotating part is just the acoustic horn. Electrical connections stable below. One horn is active, the other for stability/balance. I was imagining all sorts of reflections from rear of cabinet from 2nd horn - well there aint one. Simplicity is best.
Who did your 22H conversion? Sounds great!! At 7:30 we call that offering marching music lol. People like to march around at our national conventions a pay money with me playing that type of music.
he added motor stacks from another Leslie, and made the relay where it switches between the 2 motor plugs (they were both originally ON/OFF for the single motors originally in the Leslie,) then you wire the 2 large motors together and the 2 small motors together so they engage from each plug.
3:29 Hey Ryan, this is so cool, especially your demo showing the rate of rotation and how it affects the sound! So-- I don't know the specifics of a Hammonf organ, but I do know it's got all those special keys and pedals... So do each of those pedals and special keys automatically control the rotational speed upon pressing, or is it some "virbrado" dial (wrong term i know) you dial up and down that controls the rotational speed? i just love this sound, all those blues recordings, Gregg Allman and the like.... and I remember seeing these things on stage at concerts....
The Leslie is normally controlled by a switch called a Half Moon switch, refitted on the left side of the organ. It controls stop-run / chorale (slow speed) and high speed.
I'm tryin to convert my 212s roto sonic wurlitzer to a 122 hammond leslie. I've gotten all the parts needed, but the technician said that nothing can be done cause the cords are not compatible (well the ends)... The wurlitzer has a 9 pin input and the 122 has a 6 pin end. I really need your expertise in this matter!!
I own a leslie 910 ..but termites somehow in the tropics find themselves in your lfe..so i have to change the support board on which the bass speaker sits...took out as much as i cpould ..but board not budging...any ideas..help
They're "Mercotac" brushless slip rings that use mercury in sealed capsules. www(dot)mercotac(dot)com and www(dot)senring(dot)com/mercury-slip-ring are two manufacturers.
It varies by Leslie I believe. I know for the 122 s changing the rotary speed gets a DC signal sent through the Leslie pen and it has a bit of a delay compared to the 147
Hmm...how long has it been since you've replaced the can capacitor and/or the caps in the crossover? You shouldn't be getting that much ambient hum out of the horn. :)
How cool were these old amps! It's a pity that probably nowadays nobody takes time to invent such cool stuff, just model the cool things of the past as software, so progress for sound has probably stopped. No more new sounds as when this was invented, or the Mellotron was invented, or the Moog was invented. Now it's all about transforming cool sounds into 0s and 1s, not creating new sounds. And what for? the real thing sounds so much better than the software.
+Fer Abra There is lots of innovation at the moment with analog synths in eurorack It not as old school as this but it sounds like it may be up your street.
A truly professionally made piece of kit for once. It really shows how good the effect can be.
I did exact same modification to my Leslie 45 and works beautifully!! Nice video
What did use to convert it to 2-speed?
What a cool Sound!
Love the Leslie and the beatiful Sound of that Hammond Organ!!
Beautiful, from a time when things made sense.
Love this prelude on the organ. Please do more, please!
I could listen to you ..........(forever)....!
BEST video showing (visual & auditory) this amazing technology! Kudos Ryan!
Love you style of playing AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love it... when it comes down to it i love to play the old stuff.. god bless
Wow thanks for this video never actually seen or heard one before! What a great bit of kit and nice playing too.
This is one of the most beautiful videos I ever seen.
Thanks for the GREAT VIDEO. I like Gospel Music and Booker T & the MG'S on the Leslie
What a beautiful sound, thank you!!
So beautiful, I listened to this video often.
Real pretty key playin Man, love my Leslie too!
I always enjoy RYAN STROUP Videos. He is pretty Tight and he knows his HAMMOND ...................he creates great videos.
Man, I would love to be your neighbor. I'd keep my windows open
Well thanks! You’re pretty talented yourself!
I would love to be neighbor of the Dallas Cowboys' cheerleaders. I, too, would keep my windows open.
Un sonido único...algo que ningún efecto podrá igualar....realmente el leslie hamond es maravilloso

This video is indeed special because I've never been able to listen to a Leslie that had one of those early Jensen Hypex V21 treble drivers.
Very cool! Nice playing too. I'd love for someone to bring a Hammond/Leslie setup to our church and play with us.
Oh yes that spinning tweeter horn will take your finger right off…☮🔥
Don't put your finger in it then !
Great sound... How do I get a Modal 47 leslie to sound like that. The Hammond C3 my church has the Leslie is not strong enough to handle it. Options
JOHN PERRY i have a Leslie 45/47 and did the same mod. You need to get a 2 speed bottom motor, and a Leslie 122 compatible amplifier.
Buy a Hamptone MK1D 2-speed conversation kit. It's less time, effort and cost than the wood work, 2-speed motors, and amplifier mod.
That is some major tone right there. Thanks

Yes it is very significant, just swap the wires to one of the rotors, and you are done.
This that old school gospel organ sound 😎🎹💯🎹🎹🎹

Sweet cabinet Man!
Great video!!! Love the Leslie!
Nicely done. Great demo
Beautiful
Beautiful.....

I love your old gospel style playing! Great job!
This speaker seems in exceptionally good condition.
I like the way. The. Organ. Sounds. It sounds good but you. Gotta hear what note you are. Playing. On the. Organ
For the best Results you have to Cover the back of the Speaker ( Conus ) Glasswool.??
Explain this?
What drawbar setting are you using?
awesome playing!
Did you use a HAMPTONe to get the two speed?
No, I used conventional 2 speed motors. The amp was rewired so one outlet worked for tremolo and the other for chorale.
Who did your 22H conversion? Sounds great!! At 7:30 we call that offering marching music lol. People like to march around at our national conventions a pay money with me playing that type of music.
I want more...
Confused: The amplifier appears to be a 22H (with the added output for daisy chaining), but it's clearly 2-speeds.

How do you slow it down?
Thanks in advance
this scratching sound of rotating tweeter was definately used by pink floyd. but dont remember where
Ayrat Gimatov Pink Floyd first used the Leslie Speaker on the track Echoes from the Meddle album.
do you like the neo ventilator?
Could you tell us what your registrations were set on?
So cool!

7:13 You Betta Play that Thing!!!
I own a leslie 910 ..but termites somehow in the tropics find themselves in your lfe..so i have to change the support board on which the bass speaker sits...took out as much as i cpould ..but board not budging...any ideas..help
the board is glued in there. you'll have to cut it out, scrape out the routed out part of the wall, cut a new board and glue it in.
I wonder if a bad ground in the Leslie kit could do that...? Hmm...
What are your drawbar settings?
Do you need a leslie speaker for the leslie switch?
Good ?
Did you plan that question out or just close your eyes and start typing? What the fuck are you talking about?
Well what the hell is it gonna switch if you don't?
Lmao🤣
Lmao🤣
What was the mod?
Anyone know the mechanism for signal transfer to rotating horns? Is it just a wiper?
They're "Mercotac" brushless slip rings that use mercury in sealed capsules. www(dot)mercotac(dot)com and www(dot)senring(dot)com/mercury-slip-ring are two manufacturers.
It varies by Leslie I believe. I know for the 122 s changing the rotary speed gets a DC signal sent through the Leslie pen and it has a bit of a delay compared to the 147
there's a spindle on top of the treble speaker and the horn spins on this spindle. the speaker is under that board, not in the horn itself.
Hmm...how long has it been since you've replaced the can capacitor and/or the caps in the crossover? You shouldn't be getting that much ambient hum out of the horn. :)
Hum will not come from caps in a crossover, it comes from the amps.
...or is that a new crossover?
will the horns fit into a 125 to make it a 122 iquilvalent
that'd make more like a 145, which is also a highly desirable model.
Them motors are quiet
Sheer joy

Moving the sounds into 1s and 0s lets any kid innovate on his laptop in his bedroom. And they sure have the last 20 years.
Old engineering is still very cool, Mechanical solutions are more visceral.
your Leslie speaker volume exceed 7 and 1/2
What does that mean
@@dertersenior8151 you are advised in the manual not to because it can cause harm to the speaker
so at some point do you have too install it inside the organ??
Uh huh !
