The march, My Strength and Shield, is an arrangement of the great Welsh tune Cwm Rhondda, named for the Rhondda Valley in Wales and written by John Hughes in 1907. The tune soon became a setting for text by the Welsh hymnist William Williams, and the resulting hymn is popularly known as Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer/Jehovah, and also as Bread of Heaven. The march's title is drawn from one of the refrains in the English text of the hymn: " Be thou, still my strength and shield."
