Yeah buying a new one can mean another Cross-Straight Crisis. Plus, I don't think the rest of the world would approve unless some kind of war break out in Japan or Korea.
Keep in mind, the US Navy leased that same Gotland class submarine for over a year, constantly running war games with it. They learned everything there is to learn about diesel electric subs, how to track them, hunt them down, and destroy them. The US Navy is well aware of the strengths and weaknesses of every class of submarine on the planet. If they felt they needed a diesel electric submarine, trust me, they would have some.
US Navy's submarine fleet is THE crucial part of the service and the only part of the service that shouldn't spare any cost for an R&D or the number of deployed vessels. If the cost of the fleet becomes unsustainable, the Navy has to cut else where cause the subs are too valuable to endure cutbacks, weather in development of the next generation of vessels or in a total number of deployed subs. And when I say Navy should cut anywhere else, I mean just that. Even the Congress law mandated 11 aircraft carriers should be on the table. Although our aircraft carriers are the pinnacle of US power projection and have been for the last 70 years, they won't be as important as submarines in the unthinkable case of a major war against a near peer power. Our submarine technology is second to none. Although some of the overmatch we had over our adversaries has eroded when we were bogged down in a counterinsurgency warfare in Afghanistan and Iraq, and our enemies had time to catch up, submarine tech has stayed on the cutting edge of capability, stealth, sensors and other classified technology that is installed in them.. We are in the process of building the new Columbia class nuclear ballistic missile submarines to replace the Ohio class but we're also in the opening stages of developing a next gen SSG(N), better known as the Virginia class submarine replacement, which will be more akin to the Seawolf class of the late Cold War than to Virginia class. Virginias are incredibly capable subs but they were mostly developed for the littoral water warfare, spying and executing land attack missions with their Tomahawk missiles. SSN(X) will be more of the deep diving hunter killers capable of destroying the best that the Russians or Chinese can throw at us. Times are changing and once again we have to stay vigilant, together with our friends and allies, against the adversaries that won't have any moral doubts in exploiting our weakness or a perceived lack of vigilance. Submarines are best for that task. Especially US submarines that are superior to anything sailing in the depths of the world's oceans.

U.S. have 68 submarines that not a crises in The Nuclear Missiles defense Triad. The Navy just replaces those submarines that are more than 30 years olds that all.
Having worked on subs and ships of the USN for 50 years, I'd keep right with God if I were you.Stupid is as stupid does and there is nothing sailor proof.I repaired systems that hadn't worked from the time the vessel left the shipyard that built it 20 years from the time it left. Not complex stuff but conveyors and generators and controllers. Stuff that I was trained to repair in EM "A" School while I was serving in the Navy but the shops can't do it now. So what else can the sailors not fix today? I have retired now but I've no doubt that things have gotten worse since I retired 8 years ago. The average time it takes to get a carrier out of the yards on a refit and repair has went from 11 months to 4 years.I would go down main passageways on the ships and see all the transformers and other electrical equipment choked with dust in the vent grids. I shudder to think how bad the controllers are as they have moving parts unlike transformers. The line voltage regulators were catching on fire on lots of ships when I retired and they supply the missile launchers and combat stations for the aircraft. Many of the ships were no longer water tight as the mct's had the blocks drilled out by the sailors to pull cable thru or the stuffing tubes were rotted and falling over on the weather decks.Maintenance is no longer a priority so no matter how many new ships they build if half the systems are none functioning how can they accomplish the mission? Hire some more minorities and womenf and see how that works out for you. 50 years and I only had 3 minorities who could learn and do the work.2 of them were Filipinos and one was black. I had women apprentices who told me they didn't have to do the work because they were going to be bosses. When I reported them for not doing what was required of them to have me sign off on their work cards they sent them to another mechanic and told me they were a protected class.I asked: If a system like steering has lost power how is woman being a protected class going to keep the ship from running into another ship or aground? We as a country are screwed if our military has this type of force to protect us.
Yes these needs are costly but it is a nessesity. Protection comes at a cost ..sometimes the cost is human life. The better the ships the safer we will be and the less in human life trageties.
Interesting and worthwhile video. Unbeknownst to most analysts,, China is making amazing advances in stealthy submarines that could take out a carrier and perform other threatening operations.
I knew as soon as I scrolled down to the comments there would be people crying out against this, claiming the money would be better spent elsewhere. Weird how people don't realize the importance of a strong military.

Navair sent a factory trained mechanic to fix it. When, after three different port visits and the mechanic working on it in each port could not fix it, I asked to look at it. In a few hours I had it working perfectly. Regulations are put into place to help us, but sometimes they tie our hands. This is a weak point that needs to be addressed. Competition between different branches can do a lot of harm.
I totally agree and I believe that the US should open more chip production factories in the US under national budget. In 20 years when our jobs are replaced by the artificial intelligence that eats chips, we need those chip productions to stay safe to keep the AI running, so our GDP can stay in the way it is.

I'm surprised that North Korea even have sub but then again how many of them are functional.
They are all ancient Soviet “ hand me downs “ . It’s kinda misleading in this video because NK and Chinese submarines are no match to ours.
The Indonesian sub disaster really put other countries old submarines into consideration.
FOR GODS SAKE!!! Do NOT SCRAP the ‘Aging’ US Subs!!! FULLY refurbish them and Put them in dry storage!
Ok, hulls are at the end of their life , reactors are running out of useable fuel and internal fittings are old and need replacement ( that’s a serious challenge on a boat 170 meters long ! )
Cheaper to build new than refurbish old
Stop screaming absolute nonsense !
Better and cheaper to build a new one
Hell yeah, good bye UAV’s hello UUV’s. Next call of duty I’m predicting it.

that guy has a strange mix of American and British accents 🤔
Nice video.
I have never seen so many ads on such a short YT video. Perhaps sponsor the navy with YT ads...

Sorry, who are we at war with?
Problem with war machines is by the time you do need them it is too late. That is why the government is not going to sacrifice the spending and for good reason.
Who AREN'T we at war with? LOL
@@kronikinsomniak We spend FAR more than anyone else on the military. We spend three times as much as China, the second-highest.
If other countries spent more than us, I'd see your point. But the US is unique in this regard.
Not too bright are ya. Were not at war because of the fact that we are the strongest military in the world.
@@prestonjensen6172 China is set to overtake the US both economically and militarily sometime this century most likely. Chinas Navy is already larger than the US, and if a war unfor happens, the US will have a lot of modern things. Its like people want the US military to stop upgrading their stuff. Its also only 3% of their gdp. The US economy is disgustingly massive, so it could easily pay for this stuff in the military and other stuff. Thing is, politicians here in the US are God awful as well
Submarines as DroneCarriers would be nasty!
I-400 2.0
haha... Submarines a nuke carriers. Why pesky drone?
@@nickl5658 because... nukes are an endgame weapon!
but a stealthy carrier, delivering remote controlled recon & attack craft to enemy shores?!, thats something they could use in pretty much every engagement!
US Navy must consider to invest in:-
(1) Diesel electric Attack Submarines (SSKs)
(2) Diesel electric Aircraft Carriers (CVV)
(3) Minesweepers
(4) Nuclear Cruisers with Electromagnetic Rail Guns & DEWs.
Its easier to mass manufacture SSKs & CVVs during a conflict in comparison to Nuclear Ships.
Nuclear Cruisers/Destroyers, CVNs, SSBNs & SSNs will allow US-Navy to have almost unlimited range with the only Limitation being food supplies for crew.
Nice work
This is stuff we should be talking about everyday on mainstream news. Not the crap we normally talk about. Not the crap we talk about everyday on a stupid news.
It really shows you where the American policy is going. They have a growing homeless problem yet they spend nearly 4 billion dollars a submarine and they intend to build 4 of these a year. So disappointing really
Yeah how dare they protect their citizens and our way of life with a fraction of the US budget! We should end the military so we can become slaves for China
@@kurtwagner350 but the US is spending more on the military then the next 10 countrys combined. Why do they feel the need to spend more?

We need more
It is a competition. It is a rivalry. It inherently is. Only so many dollars go into the Defense Dept budget. Every dollar in the Navy is one less for the other branches.

@@kurtwagner350 Well don't forget the mandatory bribes. Did I say bribes? I meant campaign contributions. That's why F35 despite having a terrible track record and huge cost overruns continue to be built. If you build a part in every congressional district your crappy project never dies.
Ten minutes of my life I’ll never get back.
Are huge relatively slow Aircraft Carriers really still practical? It seems that missile development has almost guaranteed that they can quickly take Carriers out, unless there's something I don't understand. From a Layman's POV It seems more productive to spend our Military money on Subs.
The Swedish One was real legend
They (Gotland class) are still in service. And there are 3 of them. 2 of them was cut in half, extended and updated and is back in service.
The next generation A26 Bleking class is on its way. 2 has been ordered.
Create more small, remote controlled unmanned subs. Drones under the sea.
Or create submarine carrier that carries a drone
You can’t, connections would be bad, main problem with nuclear war is telling your subs to launch because you need fly a very specific plane in the right conditions to relay the launch codes
The new Columbia class boomer subs will be amazing
Look at all these sophisticated electronic gadgets and arsenal inside a submarine, the dangerous environment it live, the time it needs to build, a submarine will need at least several B $$$ to own. It is not a weapon 4 any cheap stake country.. 🤔🤔
The Navy doesn't have boats, they have ships
Underfunded for decades??? Dafuq is this guy smoking??? Gimme some.
Wars cost money and lives on both side. What have we learned!
@LeMao ZeBron There are pros & cons as I grew up during VN wars. I've survived the deathcamp from the brutal war but most of my family members did not!
@LeMao ZeBron trading lives for money is never worth it especially when it does not go to save more lives and is just used to fill a contractors wallet
The militaries Complex are getting around 150 billion dollars a year in the U.S. yearly annual budget. That doesn’t make that much sense anymore and those doom day high tech Weaponries machines are not worth it like in the 80s decades anymore.
We learned that having the best military in the world is the best deterrent to war and that 750 billion is a small price to pay for peace
Didn’t make a hella lot difference in Afghanistan, even with the worlds best military.
Just print up the money it's all good don't worry about it
a diesal sub can travel just as far as a nuclear sub the difference is that a diesal sub can't stay out for months under water.
How about solve the bedbug issue at first? Poor service man. What they have to endure...
I feel building new subs is very important. Keeping our country safe is #1. If we need to build new ships. Let's get at it. We need to be at top rate for protection. Putting it off will only put our country at a position of being unable to protect America at full force. This is a large country. With enormous amounts of peoplle to keep safe.
U.S. have 68 submarines that not a crises in The Nuclear Missiles defense Triad. The Navy just replaces those submarines that are more than 30 years olds that all.
"Under the Sea" - Sebastian
why doesn't the US shrink it's navy to stay close to the US?
Refit the retirement fleet into research and tourist fleets and offset the cost of state of the art replacement fleet with those revenues.

What is that background music in the first 1 min 30 seconds???
Yes these needs are costly but it is a nessesity. Protection comes at a cost ..sometimes the cost is human life. The better the ships the safer we will be and the less in human life trageties.
If I were a billionaire Id buy a sub not a mega yatch

Interesting and worthwhile video.
Unbeknownst to most analysts,, China is making amazing advances in stealthy submarines that could take out a carrier and perform other threatening operations.
I knew as soon as I scrolled down to the comments there would be people crying out against this, claiming the money would be better spent elsewhere. Weird how people don't realize the importance of a strong military.
Except the military must be strong in the correct way or it is useless.

B-52's should have been retired decades ago, but they will be working far into the future. Same thing with Navy vessels - with will power, when they simply put their hand out and say give me a new ship, it means they are spoiled.
