"I'm the guy you yelled at this morning."
"I need more."
The older I get the more this line makes a lot of sense.
Fantastic comment
I know some say Charlie broke all the rules but that's not true. He did bring in a Deus Ex Machina but it was after receiving a life changing advice. He still followed McKee's advice by adding the drama, made his characters (including himself) go through changes and it didn't feel cheap. I think his advice to heart "Your characters must change and the change must come from them"
But I would argue the change _didn’t_ come from within. At least, not entirely. This scene is literally him getting advice from someone else
Cox should've been nominated for Best Supporting Actor that year, along with costar Chris Cooper. I always am happy when I see him in a movie. He always gives a great performance
I think he was a better Hannibal Lector than Sir Anthony Hopkins.
Chris cooper was out of control in this movie
His role I believe was too short
@@thebicycleman8062 Judi Dench won her Oscar for almost, or less screen time back in 98. Has cox ever been nominated?
Nic Cage should of won best actor, and best supporting actor
I wish Charlie had talked to McKee about "The 3" thinking someone else finally would hate it as well and Mckee goes "That's one of the best ideas I've ever heard in my life"
The real McKee worked with Kaufman on the 3rd act of this very movie. Meta on top of meta.
The key is how he breaks all of Mckees rules including his don't you dare use a deux ex machina advice ... lol 🤣 genius
Deus ex machina is a plot device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem in a story is suddenly and abruptly resolved by an unexpected and unlikely occurrence. Wikipedia
That's exactly how Adaptation ends 😉
it's just so brilliant i can barely stand it even all these years later. kaufman essentially admits defeat. he twisted himself in knots trying to be anything other than a hollywood screenwriter and just can't avoid it in the end.
@@SpindicateAudio it really is brilliant
From the moment Charlie asks his twin 'how would you handle it' the movie diverges into pure Hollywood.
Every single Hollywood cliché is on full display. The riveting detective work where they can find and reach the author in no time, the discovery of drug use, the shootout, the hokey monologue about being more assertive the twin says during the shootout, the death of his twin, the final corny monologue of optimism from someone who's ostensibly just lost their twin brother... It all goes to show how forgiving the audience is towards even the most hackneyed schlock as long as the story hits all the familiar beats and validates them (PS Yes, I'm fully aware this movie is doing it ironically, that's what makes it great!)
And Umberto Eco argued that Casablanca is also a classic because it is a mish mash o clichés.
Wow , i was catching all the little glimpses of the irony writing in the story , but i didn't realise this part , since the last act of the film is greatly influenced by hus brother is way more tense , and 'hollywood'. Thanks for helping me notice it
The greatest screenplay ever written
This, The Player and Birdman all do this very well
Does anyone yet understand what a powerful breakthrough this film is in terms of cinema and your choices in life?
Used to find this a little disappointing and a bit of a cheat but looking at films & shows that fall apart in the end & people scorn them for such.... Kauffman's Mckee is right.
Yes, great point. People shit on "Game of Thrones" because of that ending. Was it good? Not really, but these people forget that show was incredible for all those seasons. I still highly respect that show despite a lackluster finale.
@@KevinMuller5 you’re right. The bulk of GoT was superb. However. If you don’t stick the landing….. you frankly …. don’t have shit.
ur comment isnt exactly valid here.. as McKee CLEARLY SAYS "and DONT U DARE use deux ex machinas!" and wht u r referring to is kind of movies that use that - so McKee is actually saying the opposite of ur comment -
@@KevinMuller5 if you’re talking about Seasons 5-8, aka, half the show, then yes.
is that judd hirsh in the background of the bar scene? 1:05
I love the idea that Being John Malkovich hasn’t come out yet.
Because he made the exact kind of script McKee would love and before he went to his seminar.
And then this movie completely does the opposite of Mckee’s Advice near the end💀💀💀
Its kinda the point haha
Don't you dare bring in deus ex machina
"...and don't you dare bring in a Deus Machina."
Re-write the Script. Give it a HollyWood End Ing
Seriously one of the best movies ever.
This movie transcends movies. It is unique in its genius and execution.
Casablanca was written by twins
Great scene.
omg he plays robert mckee so well
Cox is God
Cox is an amazing actor. In just 5 minutes of screen time he manages to leave a huge impact!!!!!!!
I love this Scene.
Beautiful
I like that Brian Cox IS Deus Ex Machina.
🤯
@@troylee4196 Brian Cox is an ideal thing in this flick. Cage is voice-overing while Cox interrupts with "and don't use voice over." So, when Cox says: "And don't use Deus Ex Machina" ... what do you think that means? It means that's what's up.
Logan Roy before he was a billionaire
Nah nah you gotta go deeper
Has Brian Cox ever been young? 😅

Is this the best film ever made? It's entirely in the conversation (even if you don't have ebola) (or hanta or marburg virus) ❤
Brian Cox british accent seems to have faded to its demise...
Rian Johnson should have watched this.
Rian Johnson took McKee's actual seminar as a kid.
Let it go. He’s great. He made a Star Wars movie you didn’t like. So what.
star wars nerds are insufferable, go drool over your marvel action figures or musk's latest repackaging of an inefficient bus
Tell me you missed the point of this scene without telling me you missed the point of this scene
Do you realize that McKee IS a Deus ExMachina in the movie right?
