im a pre-op trans guy so i require baggy tops, but im also short so once a sweater is baggy enough it almost goes to my knees. thank you for this video
My sweet husband bought me a final-sale sweater for Christmas from my favourite store. I love him but not the sweater. Your tutorial has helped me figure out how to make it work. Thank you!
Hello there Anastasia, Thank you for this tutorial. I've been sewing for several decades and never seen this method for keeping the binding on the bottom of a cropped sweater. Great job! I might share this with my audience....subscribed😊
I am from Chicago and live in Milwaukee and would love to take a class. This video shows how a brilliant mind puts something I knew was possible into action. Lol Thanks for sharing.
I am SO excited that I was able to follow your directions and crop my sweater! THANK YOU! I do not sew and your step by step instructions made it possible!!
This was super cool! After you mentioned Wheeler, my husband laughed and then put the song on. 😂😂 But I never knew that is what you use the J foot for!
Zumba Mixes lol love it! That song is so good! The j foot helps so that the overcast won’t pull & pucker the fabric. Give it a try & let me know what you think .
Great idea, I just wonder how you kept the hem from stretching out as you sewed on the machine. I would probably use Wonder tape but it seemed like you didn't use anything! Lots of wondering!!
This a favorite of mine. I would Love to see you take several sweaters and make a long sweater that you make it twirl. I have watched Catwise videos, I have collected several sweaters but I don't want to ruin them. After Covid 19, I am going to your sewing opportunities. I'm 2 hours Southwest of Chicago. Love your work.
How cool! Do you have tips for working with a sweater that has larger yarn? (bulkier and maybe not as tightly knit) I have one that I really want to crop, but I'm scared!
Yes! Baste all your seams before you cut anything & you will probably want to put elastic or seam tape on the seams to help it not stretch out when you sew it.
I did not use a special needle. Just a universal needle. I am not sure how wide my stitch was but you want to change it depending on the fabric you are sewing.
I'm going to try this! I was surprised you didn't stretch the sweater a bit when doing the straight stitch. Does that make the new hem less stretchy? Or make it harder to put on over your head?
You should use a lighting bolt stitch, small zig zag, serge or overcast stitch for sewing the sweater. I straight stitched it to sew it in place then overcast it. This sweater was not super stretchy too. Hope that helps . Happy sewing!
But the straight-stitching (at the binding) and the overcasting (the raw edges) are at different places. So I think the straight-stitching will be a problem - it will break because it won't stretch like the fabric of the sweater.
Can you do a video on how to just hem a knitted thing, that doesn’t already have a finished cuff. I have an insanely long pair of leg warmers that I want to cut in half and make two pairs but they are just served at each end. I don’t have a segrger, just a regular sewing machine. I am wondering if I could somehow make a nice edge at the top by folding it over and hemming it but I think it might just pucker too much. And it needs to be stretchy.
Can someone help me out? I'm confused as to what the underside is like after its done. Is it smooth? Or does the zig zagged part stick out? How do you get the underneath zig zagged part to lay flush with the rest of the sweater?
Hi! cut off the binding and the serger or zig zag the raw edge and them flip it up and sew it down with a broken zig zag stitch, cover stitch it or use a lightening bolt stitch.
Just learning...the serger is used for knits so is this technique you are using with the second stitching replacing the serge? A method to bind those threads down and hold together? One more thing, if you are hemming tshirts, is it true you MUST use a cover stretch stitch serger machine to ensure the stitches won't rip out? Stretch is the key method to success when hemming tshirt knits? Thanks!
The serger is awesome! Yes the second stitch on this is in replace of the serger so if you have a serger you can just use that. You can also use a zig zag stitch or a lightening bolt stitch for sewing knit hems.
Thank you for your suggestion! A tutorial on tailoring a sweater or jacket for a fitted look is a fantastic idea. I'll definitely consider it for my next video!
Lol I did.my knit was so think & not very stretchy. If you have a super stretchy knit you can use the lightening bolt stitch or a narrow zig zag. The best is going to be your serger.
Hi! I’m new to sewing and I’m confused what backstitching is, do I just repeat the stitching at the very end? Also do I need different foots for different stitches? (I’m very new!!)
Backstitching is when you switch to reverse stitching (there should be a button or lever on your machine) and go back over the stitches you just made. You do it at the beginning and end of a line of stitching and it secures the loose thread - it's like the equivalent of tying a knot if you were doing it by hand! The J foot isn't completely necessary for zig zag/overcasting if you don't want to buy too many new gadets, but it does help. There are other special feet for different functions, like a zipper foot
Welcome to the sewing community! Backstitching is a technique where you sew backwards over your last stitches to secure them. And yes, different stitches often require different presser feet, so it's good to have a few on hand!
I got an adorable lilac sweater with a beautiful knit pattern months ago that i want to love but the fit is just weird on me, it hits just a little too long to be a normal fit, but too short to be longline, and the sleeves are too short for it to be a tall garment, so its just sort of a wtf moment. I'm gonna try this out, hoping it makes it a more wearable length for me :)
this is probably the easiest most comprehensive sewing video ive ever seen in all my years on youtube, thank you !! ❣️
Excellent. You are very welcome 🤗
That is also how you hem jeans and retain the factory hem! I have done this on my jeans, it's pretty cool how it turns out. Thanks for the tip!
xxx 000 totally! Happy sewing!
@Scott Milan you are right, no one cares😶🤔
Ugh this is the cutest, "you don't wanna end up like a weezer song" made my day. Also this is life changing, thank you for this video!!
Ha. Glad you enjoyed it. 🎀💗 Thank you for watching & happy sewing .
thank you so much I was so worried about accidentally unraveling my sweater but this made it so easy!
Awesome! That's so good! DM me pictures @sewanastasia on instagram and I'll post your sweater in the stories! Happy Sewing!

Your very welcome . Happy sewing & transition 🎀🎀🎀💕
I love it. I was always confused on how to keep the original hem. Im going to try this technique on some jeans i got (i am short)
Katie Morgan try it out & let me know how it goes. I am short too! I hem everything! 🎀😂💕
Had my first try at altering a garment today thanks to this tutorial, and it turned out great! Thanks a lot! Greetings from Sweden 😊
Amanda Wahlgren woohoo ! Send me pics!!!!

Very welcome. Thank you for watching.
THE WEEZER REFERENCE!!!
lol happy you enjoyed that 💖
Good stuff. How do you use the straight stitch on a stretchy garment? When you stretch the sweater band the thread will break
I was thinking Weezer and you said it. You are so cute!!
Christina Holland 😊🎀🎀 thank you. I love that weezer song too! :)
i really. really. appreciate that weezer reference😭
Teehee glad u caught it 😊🎀
Great idea, I just wonder how you kept the hem from stretching out as you sewed on the machine. I would probably use Wonder tape but it seemed like you didn't use anything! Lots of wondering!!
If you dont pull it and you have the right foot pressure and stitch length it should not stretch out.

Love your work.
Thank you for your support! I love the idea of creating a long twirling sweater! I’ll definitely consider that for a future project.
Can you hand sew if you don’t have a sewing machine? Thank you for your tips 😍
Carina Guevara you totally can!
Excellent video. Thank you so much.
Your very welcome 🙏

can you do a video on cropping a sweater without the binding part?
Yes. Check out this one. th-cam.com/video/yLZXuwyb6Oo/w-d-xo.html
Very cool! Definitely will put this info to use. Thanks!
Deb Kincaid 🎀💜 send pics of your finished sweaters. I’d love to share them!

will this work on thicker/ more open knits?
Yes! You just might need to change the stitch length or tension depending on your sewing machine.
Cute! Could you make this sweater Alson to kind of like a shorter ballet wrap cardigan thing? How would you do it?
You totally could.

Iron it if your fabric is stiff or give it a wash. You will have a seam allowance on the inside if that’s what you are talking about.
Hi, how would you crop a sweater when the binding is gathered at the bottom and I want it to be straight? Basically, I want to remove the binding.
Hi! cut off the binding and the serger or zig zag the raw edge and them flip it up and sew it down with a broken zig zag stitch, cover stitch it or use a lightening bolt stitch.
For steaught stitch what was the setting , beginnerr here 😅
@@estherl4547 Test out different lengths & widths with the type of fabric you are using. You want it to look flat & not bunchy or wavy
So helpful, thank you!!!

Great
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful.
Would I be able to use this same method to crop a crew neck/other kinds of materials? Or does this method only work best with the sweater material?
You can use this method to make anything shorter.
would this work with a thicker knit sweater ?
Yes
Can this work for chunky sweaters?
Yes. I would use a long and wide stitch though.
I cropped a sweater and it didn’t have a bottom hem. I ended up with weird tulip-y wavy bottom. I’m very new to this... any ideas? Thank you!!
You could blind hem it. Did u use a serger ?
I dont have a sewing machine or know how to sew but I have this cute thrifted chaps knit sweater that I want to crop 😂
mad as usual oh man. Maybe try using a needle & thread? I have a few videos for sewing by hand.

love your glasses! where are they from!?
Mindy Bennett thank you ! They are from SEE 🎀
Why did you use a straight for the first stitch and not zig zag?
My fabric was not very stretchy. You can use a knit stitch, a broken zig zag or a regular zig zag. I would use a serger if you have a stretchy knit.
I think I had this sweaters sister back in the 80s
Ha. Amazing!!!! I wanna see if you find a pic.

It sounds like you're really putting in the effort to make that sweater work for you! I hope the adjustments help you love it even more.
what’s the song at the end? ☺️
its my friends band DPC
How long is the straight stitch and what is the tension?
ojoy1010 test it out on your ma home to see what works for you but I didn’t need to change my tension.
Can I just hand sew this diy
You can .
As a lover of long sweaters, these videos hurt my heart.
Awwww you can leave yours long & tailor it 🎀😊💕
