  • During a pre-Super Bowl 50 event hosted by Starkey Hearing Foundation, over seventy people received free hearing aids. While it was hailed by the media as a good deed, parents of Deaf children felt it was exploitation. In this interview, Alex discusses why they felt that way and how Starkey could better frame Deaf people.

We were flattered to be mentioned as the "good company" example [10:58]-thanks Deanne! It has been our pleasure to work with you and others to expand ASL education. If you are a company wondering if you should make the commitment to participate and embrace the Deaf community, our advice is... do it!

I have so many thoughts and emotions after watching this interview! Yes, sign language and Deaf culture should be recognized by all! I agree, hearing aids isn't the fix all without a language to communicate. I am hearing and I thank you for captioning this interview. Education about the Deaf community is important and understanding another's perspective is crucial to progress. It made me sick and sad to learn how families were treated by Starkey.
I found The Daily Moth thanks to Nyle Dimarco and his efforts. I am also trying to learn more sign.

To answer your parting question: Not only SHF, but everyone and every company should recognize Deaf culture and sign language!!

Thank you CAD & Alec for sharing with us. "Inspiration porn is not okay!" The Disability activists feel the same. Starkey is another example of misleading parents and public a "broken promise" a Deaf child can perform as well as hearing peers by simply plugging in a hearing aid.
Ex. Director of Starkey, Steven Sawalich once said : "One of the greatest challenges for all children with hearing loss is communication and connection with the rest of the world. Hearing is the foundation for building relationships, connecting us to the people we love and the world around us. Children with hearing loss often experience delayed development of speech, language and cognitive skills. Listening and hearing are critical to education. Without the ability to hear teachers or classmates, hearing-impaired children struggle to learn and excel in the classroom. However, if these communication barriers are removed early enough, children with hearing loss can perform just as well as their peers". -
CAD is not against hearing aids, just how they portray wrong message about the "children with hearing loss". Starkey Co and it Foundation need a marketing consultant from an experts who knows, seek help from CAD!

I agree with CAD. I used to wear my hearing aids when I was teenager boy a long time ago. I was frustrated with my hearing aids company won't accept my insurance cover this year. Everything is changed very quickly! I still support value my ASL for the deaf communities. In my opinion, ASL is the most beautiful style for the opportunity for the deaf communities, too. 🤟

I like Julie last sentence hearing aid is not language. It is a tool. BTW SHF afraid to lost their business if Deaf kids learn sign language. We need to make new laws all Deaf babies and kids require ASL by visual communication and education. Deaf and Hearing are different approach ways of communicating.

This is actually a good video. It gave me a different way to think about approaching companies like SHF in the future, and provides great examples of other organizations that SHF can emulate. The Daily Moth should consider sending a copy of this video, or a link to this video, to SHF so that SHF can learn from this video how they might do even better with the Deaf community.

I would be very much interested to know what Mr. Austin's views are regarding Deaf people, ASL, and the Deaf community. Although I think I have a pretty good notion already.

Many insurance companies don't have hearing aids as part of their plans. I've found less and less insurance company do this which gives me no choice but to use up what I saved to purchase a new one. Even hearing loss from birth, and not hearing loss from old age, and still they don't add them into the plan. This is discriminating for many of us hearing impaired. It's almost like buying a new 1/2 a car every 4-6 years.

My left ear is deaf and some hearing, only 30 percent left on my right ear with a hearing aid. I grew up in a deaf education, starting 1st grade with deaf and hard of hearing people. So I know both hearing and deaf world. What many hearing people lack to understand is a hearing aid doesn't really work for many deaf people. If they cannot hear any word clearly from any of their ear, then a hearing aid is worthless. It would give them a headache if a hearing aid is left on just like my left ear that I had tried for 2 years as a teen. Many people love to go to an event to meet people. To get a free hearing aid, there always is something in return, picture taken or film for promotion, same thing with sweepstakes or contests.

Justin osmond went to starkey. And surprised me that he did not use sign language only speak with children on the video. It considered himself insulted to uncles and deaf community and deaf children .

I agree that insurance should cover hearing aids all over the nation as of right now I can't afford to get a new one to replace my "worn out" hearing aid even though I still wear it regardless to the battery holder that I had to be careful with. This needs to be changed totally. And I agree with CAD.
