@@melody5893 and you know this how? You're arguing about it right now. If I were a creator, and I wanted to apologise for something, I would turn off comments. How an apology video should go: “I’m sorry I used the n word. It was racist and I hurt a lot of people by doing it. It’s not my word to use and I will never do it again. Etc etc.” no excuses, no playing the victim, to the point and short. You do NOT need 20 mins to apologize 🙄

It's almost like a coming out video, where a youtuber sheds a few tears and talks about how they hope people will still accept now that their racism is out of the closet. I'd hope maybe someone had something move their heart, but if it has they are good at hiding that. But damn, they could educate and decide to become an antiracist, collaborate with someone who was Black (if they dare) and talk openly about their own bad ideas and that person could inform what it feels like, the history, the present. Deppressinggg.
"I was in a dark place" Not to get personal, but I'm clinically depressed, severely anxious, & currently disabled by my chronic illness. Strangely, never once did I resort to shouting vile slurs aimed at marginalized people.
Having grown up White around racism their apologies made me cringe a lot. I’m not perfect but I’ve made an active effort to learn and grow. The idea that racism is individual actions instead of a constant tilted system is what I had to outgrow when I hit that wall of “what I learned in childhood doesn’t seem to match the real world.” To see people in their 30s still being in that mindset of making it personal is downright painful. The idea of getting cancelled or having your past mistakes thrown back at you completely overrules the damage they did and it’s so so obvious they’re not sincere about it, because they genuinely don’t understand what the big deal is over some jokes. As long as they didn’t mean them, they think it’s not “real racism.” They judge other people’s actions and their own intent and that’s something I’m glad I unlearned. If they took an effort to listen instead of defend their good nature they’d be able to outgrow it too.
k4nma thank you so much!! I’m forever in debt to the patient and intelligent Black women who chose to educate me on this stuff (only Black/muslim women have been open to it for some reason). I feel bad for them needing to explain something that shouldn’t even exist in the first place and I owe my entire growth to them. No one else taught me shit about racism other than “calling them slurs is racist but it’s illegal so just be nice to people.”
I saw this really good quote recently that said something along the lines of "Instead of saying you're not racist, you should really be saying 'I do not want to be racist". It's much better than just going "I'm not racist!!!" and seeming like you're just denying everything, while if you go "I don't want to be racist" means that you did, in fact, act out of line and racist, but you want to be better.
I think this is an awesome quote. I want people to learn and grow and this includes myself. “I do not want to be racist” is more anti racist than just saying “IM NOT RACIST” and getting defensive. It allows room for you to grow rather than just stop learning.
Idk why people calling themselves a “human being that lives and breathes” irritates me so much but it does??? Like, I fuckin know you’re a human, that doesn’t make you immune to owning up to your mistakes fam!!

being in a “dark place” is very similar to being drunk in the way that it changes your decision making skills, not your morals. when you get into a “dark place” it won’t make you racist, but if you’re already racist it might be easier for you too slip up and show your true colours
People react differently in dark places. I’m not defending anyone and their actions, but I don’t know if what you’re saying really works. Racism is such a deeply rooted and complicated system that understanding people that have done/do racist things are just as complicated. Even so, they should all be held accountable. And while saying that you were in a “dark place” isn’t always a valid excuse and doesn’t imply that all people in dark places do racist things, it still gives some context... Probably could lead into the whole Nurture vs Nature dilemma.
I don't completely agree with your analogy, but yeah. I have severe anxiety, and was only dosed when it got so bad i was having mutiple panic attacks in a day just trying to go to school. I was also being bullied at the time. I wasn't a racist asshole because of that!
i feel like a genuine apology would be 1. not changing the subject mid sentence 2. not whispering 3. not trying to victimize themself for making racist actions 4. not bragging about how rich and successful they are DURING the apology
Their reaction isn’t because they’re not racist, but because they’re worried other people will find out and they’ll lose their following, friends, money, etc. It’s one thing to be ignorant and willing to learn and its another to victimize yourself and try to sweep everything under the rug.
Seriously, apologies are so simple to do properly: admission of guilt, acknowledgement of consequences, and promising to improve. And most importantly, NOT TRYING TO DEFEND YOUR ACTIONS, you can explain why you made that mistake at the time, but not say it like you think you were in the right. Literally basic social shit we should have figured out in elementary school

they dont seem to realize that being or not being racist has absolutely nothing to do with your state of mind. nobody can peer into your heart and see the good in you. action is what matters in this world not intention. like these guys are so attached to racism as something you are fundamentally, racism as an "identity" almost, that they fail to realize that racism is ultimately something you do; its an action you use against others. you can say that youre "not racist" all you want but that essentially means nothing when you are DOING racist things, when you are PRACTICING racism. racism requires action and so does being against racism. you cant really "be" not racist; you can TRY to not be racist, you can LEARN to not be racist. the moment you think you've reached "not racist" is the moment you get complacent. what you really need to do is to be actively participating in the fight against racism, and that includes your own.

I mean I'm pretty sure I always knew it(I'm turning 17 this year) but I have friends who genuienly didn't know they were doing something wrong at the time but have in recent years realised it and bettered themselves. So idk what to think about that. You should never excuse your bad behaviour because of time and place but aknowledging that it was and is wrong is the way to go, and ofc not repeating the same mistakes and just being a decent person when realising you weren't. I just mean that for a lot of people it might've not been obvious for some reason.
Mr Mr Mr Mr I grew up in a place where racism was the norm. The Jewish kids hated the black kids and vice versa. We were actively told by our parents and grandparents to hate each other. The N-word was thrown around daily. While it doesn’t excuse the behavior, try to understand that not everyone was allowed to learn the same things as you. It took me a long time to understand that I was wrong for how I thought. What matters is that people do learn, even if they learn later than others.
@@CH-jj8wk see, it goes back to how they were raised. Like Nazis, the kids were raised that making fun of Jews was okay.

I wish I could throw this comment at people who don't know this
People react differently in dark places.

Yeah so true also I’m mixed and people were really rude about my hair and I told them that’s racist and they were like “it’s not racist cause you’re not black”. So gotta love people.
@@romy5154 intentions mean nothing when you're hurting someone. Google exists. Libraries exist. Claiming "ignorance" as an excuse is old and tired
it's so crazy how people don't wanna be CALLED racist but don't mind BEING racist....make it make sense
tea
I’ve heard before that it’s because everyone knows that “racist” is a bad thing. And people don’t like being called bad. Even if they are completely unapologetic about the actual behavior that gave them that label, it’s the label itself they hate because it means “bad”
They know its bad they didn't want people to know
No one likes being called on their shit.
That goes with every label that describes a discriminatory person. If somebody calls a gay person the f-word that's ok BUT DON'T YOU DARE CALL THEM HOMOPHOBIC. If somebody calls a trans person a t****y it doesn't matter BUT PLEASE DON'T CALL THEM TRANSPHOBIC. If a white person calls a black person the n-word it was because "they had a dark childhood" BUT YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE ME THEY ARE NOT RACIST

First step: be as genuine as Jenna (lol)
Addison Kennedy second step realize your not as sweet, kind, genuine and smart as Jenna and make a half ass apology and try to make excuses for their dumb asses

I’ve always loved this trope cause it’s like if you really cared wouldn’t you put the effort in to make the video look good and professional?? It seems silly to make the “super serious” videos intentionally low quality. If they wanted to put out a decent apology it would be well thought out and executed, not “boohoo I’m so sad look how sad and remorseful I am, I’m so sad I can’t even edit even though I probably don’t do my own editing anyway”

"people seem to be very focused on the idea of "being racist" that the idea of DOING something racist is completely blown out the water to the point that when you call someone out for doing something that was racist they go straight into defending themselves of not being a racist. don't defend, don't excuse, just acknowledge. acknowledge, apologize, understand, and help other people understand why. that is taking accountability."
edit: this was said by mac in the video
they dont seem to realize that being or not being racist has absolutely nothing to do with your state of mind. nobody can peer into your heart and see the good in you. action is what matters in this world not intention.
like these guys are so attached to racism as something you are fundamentally, racism as an "identity" almost, that they fail to realize that racism is ultimately something you do; its an action you use against others. you can say that youre "not racist" all you want but that essentially means nothing when you are DOING racist things, when you are PRACTICING racism.
racism requires action and so does being against racism. you cant really "be" not racist; you can TRY to not be racist, you can LEARN to not be racist. the moment you think you've reached "not racist" is the moment you get complacent. what you really need to do is to be actively participating in the fight against racism, and that includes your own.

@@Cindy99765 Right? At least in other "apology" videos or whatever you wanna call them they have a bit of a checklist to looking "remorseful", and while someone completely changing their look and/or tone to make these videos is obviously NOT the way to go to try and be genuine (like the videos with Tana, Shane, etc) Jeffree putting on a full face of makeup and looking like they're about to go on a three day cruise after they post this video is even WORSE, especially after not even saying "sorry" or acknowledging their racist actions and instead advertising another pallet and going on about how popular with drama they are.

T H A N K Y O U!!! What is this bullshit? Why weren't they raised right?!
I've known this since I was 5 and I don't understand why people don't know it!
It could also go back to just misinformation, someone could just think it's a word to call your friends and not know what the actual word is, like the word f*ck if they're a child. It really depends on the situation and person I guess. Everyone's different but as long as we realize our mistakes and try to help and inform and better ourselves then I think things will get better.
Cortreezy and Mac are iconic. No further words are needed.
