Yes I 100% agree with you there. When I learnt about fasting and autophagy, I couldn’t believe it! A process that breaks down autoimmune cells and builds new ones from your own stem cells?! If there was a treatment that did that, it would be heralded as the best treatment we have for MS!
Just to let you know that my latest scan showed no new lesions and the neurologist was surprised. It was purely a change in diet to the MS Hope type diet and exercise and managing stress. The meds I take would have taken at least 13 months to take effect he said so no lesions is excellent.
Oh wow that's brilliant news, thanks for sharing the update! That really keeps me motivated to stay on everything that I'm doing! When you say MS Hope 'type' diet, have you modified slightly? So happy for you that there have been no new lesions too! 😀 I hope to be in the same situation when I Next have an MRI!
@@tomgarbett77 I was very strict the first 5 months as I had cut out everything in the MS Hope diet plus all nightshade vegetables and was mainly on cauliflower rice and veg and fish. I even cut out coffee/caffeine for 3 months. Then I introduced nightshade but limit tomatoes. I do sometimes have lentils and beans but only when I soak them overnight and then pressure cook them. But I do now have rice and rice noodles/pasta too. Keep going don't get demotivated.
@@goddess.110 yes that sounds the same way I do it, I am careful with nightshades but obviously best bet diet allows most of them but are wary anyway. And also try to limit rice and not go too overboard because it is still a grain, but usually make it resistant by cooking then cooking before eating!
Great video! Just finished a 2 day water fast! Want to try to up it to 3 days maybe every 2-3 weeks with 16:8 fasting in between - for MS i think the autophagy and Treg upregulation is very useful as it is neuroprotective and down regulates the Th17 / IL17 inflammation pathways (from what i have seen) - in mouse models fasting for 1 day - eating for 1 day (for a month) resulted in 50% lower B/ T cells which are attacking our nervous system in MS-like disease. Only thing is a mouse metabolism is 7 times faster so a human model would be 1 week eating 1 week water fast xD Would definitely love to see more research on this kind of topic done in MS + combined with rebooting the gut biome. Also seems many with MS have a gut biome problem - been trying to eat a diverse amount of foods. Read a theory that a toxin produced by Chlostridium (that is higher in relative abundance in MS) produces toxins that are released into the bloodstream. Interestingly these toxins are neurotoxins... that damage nerves. Definitely an interesting area of research currently - have seen that FMT (fecal matter transplants) in mice models reduced MS symptoms dramatically showing that there is likely at least some relationship in the gut-brain axis. Perhaps our microbiota are just out of whack as they are incredibly diverse/ it takes years to build up from childhood and can be destroyed in a couple days with bad food / antibiotics / ibuprofen even I believe. Just means that perhaps some "good bacteria" are removed and perhaps never fully recover allowing the bad bacteria to cause havok / potentially trigger an auto-immune response as there are 500 million neurons in our gut I believe... something like that.
Thanks for your input a really interesting read certainly! But yes there really are so many benefits, the evidence is undeniable. I always like to look at things like this from an evolutionary perspective as it is clear autoimmune conditions is really a modern, sanitised world phenomenon where something is going wrong in the body because we are putting it into a lifestyle and nutrition etc that is foreign to it. Like the link with vitamin D and MS is undeniable, and this is obviously because we spend so much more indoors now than we used to even 50 years ago let alone hundreds of years ago! But yes very impressed you managed a two day water fast! I’ve only ever done around 38 hours (so one full day and sleep either side) but I will definitely push for longer soon because I think I actually find it easier in some regards than doing the fasting mimicking! But yea the gut micro biome definitely has a huge part to play and is clear. Again if we were eating no processed foods and a wide variety of in season fruit and vegetables and occasional meat then I’m sure we’d have no problems in this area! That’s why for me taking control of MS is a little bit taking control of your body and giving it the conditions it was designed for!
@@tomgarbett77 The evolutionary aspect is indeed fascinating :) Fighting this disease with the best scientific tools/knowledge available. Vit D is indeed a very interesting one and definitely seems to be linked to our sedentary lifestyle. I lived for quite some time in Norway in my youth (8 years) thinking back I believe that definitely played a role as winters were almost total darkness for 6 months and even during spring / summer it would rain half the time xD Living in NL currently though - trying to also get some natural UVB / UVA as I heard that also is quite beneficial - also makes sense that the natural biological synthesis may be slightly more effective than supplements. The water fast was indeed quite tough but it's a good mental challenge :) Fully agree with the diet! Healthy meats / fatty fish and lots of veg are definitely a great way to give the body everything it needs to be healthy + reduce inflammation. I cut most of my sugar except for occasional honey + some dark choco now :)
@@__Wanderer Yes agree we've got to use all the tools at our disposal to fight this disease until they manage to understand a sure fire way to treat the thing! But yes I think all the things we have discussed here are all common sense really and are massively beneficial for overall health which will play its role too in the progression of the disease and also in later life, less likely to get other chronic illnesses etc, so it's al good stuff! Exactly what my channel is all about trying to spread the word that there are changes we can all make to be healthier and to fight back at this disease! :)
Great video Tom I fast sometimes but not intentionally its just because I'm busy So has lot benefits that's good news I believe though not for us we need lot nutritious food vitamins I think you have be very athletic and healthy to do this I'm making healthy food even when out order healthy foods
Yea definitely you’re right the main thing is making sure what you do put into your body is healthy and nutritious! Then from there fasting is something you can potentially try to work in from there but it definitely needs to be eased in too!
@@tomgarbett77 Tom agree eat healthy nutritious because we keep bones strong Fasting has to carefully control You know how to do that ! thank you for informing us its interesting topic 😊

I truly believe autophagy is the key in overcoming MS & living symptom free.
