Our budget challenge is getting harder in this touristy country because this is the MOST expensive country of the trip by far! Costa Rica has a wealth of beauty both in tropical nature and it's amazing people. From San Jose to Limon, we hitchhike and set our eyes on the caribbean sea. Enjoying swimming in the blue waters and white beaches in this backpacker hotspot.

Costa Rica! I backpacked there last year.. it is super expensive! I also went to Liberia (flew in), & went to that exact McDonald's! Memories... keep up the great videos!

So I've been following you guys' videos from Guatemala ... El Salvador ... Nicaragua... etc ...and I'm jealous. You guys can find ca ride within 3 secs hitch-hiking. You don't have a place to stay and someone will offer their home to you, even showing you their new baby. You don't have money for a bus and some child takes you home and gives you some money for bus. You walk into a border and get visa/entry-permit without issues.
Now.... I like being positive and optimistic. Always giving situations the benefit of the doubt. However, I have to admit as a black person, I'm afraid I might not get as lucky as you guys. Going to Costa Rica and Guatemala in January 2020, and I plan on attempting hitch-hikes and couch-surfing. Wish me luck, and thanks for making these videos.
Haha I wish we would get picked up instantly with hitchhiking... 2seconds is our fastest we have ever had, we were stunned. Longest was 2-3hours. So not a piece of cake!
But I feel you, appereances do a lot when you're hitchhiking. Because you are dependant on people's judgement and willingness to stop. Its not easy.
Our best advice is to dress up - with a clean shirt and to look friendly, open and trustworthy and upbeat.
(we looked weird, dirty and tired most of the time- not good 😩😅)
I know a lot of people have prejudgement but as you can see in our series, there are good people everywhere in the world. Seriously amazing people. Give them a chance 😉

Hey great show guys!! I'm soon going to Central America but very confused about how you got in to Costa Rica/panama without any "onward traveling documents" (like flight tickets or so)? Or did you have that? I want to travel trough the countries so I would love some tips on how you did at the border crossing!! I'm not sure when I'm going to leave Costa Rica up north but do I really have to buy a plane ticket to even get in to Costa Rica?

I am glad to hear CouchSurfing still works. Haven't done it in years. That 'hostal' for 35 dollars looked really bad.. when I check booking.com it seems that there are many better and cheaper options. Maybe it is better to just book ahead if not strictly budgeteering :) . Nice to see some real Central America from your videos. Otherwise, neither touristy videos nor articles about crime give a good picture.
Did you guys film multiple potential episode openings for each episode to choose from or did you just know when the right moment was?
sometimes we would reshould a scene to camera if we thought the background was better but very rarely you just dont have time you're always too busy with the road

Have watched all of the vids in this series! We've lived in China for the last 6 years and if you're looking for an amazing place with amazing scenery with delicious food - it's amazing! We're heading to El salvador and Peru in July - but wanted to either do Costa Rica or Mexico. Any recommendations? We were leaning more towards CR just cos it may be a little safer... We don't know. We're both early 30's from Australia.

I wondered this as well! Paddy mentioned that Thijs speaks French. Does he speak Dutch or German as well? I'm so bad a recognizing accents, I can't tell.
i think he speaks them all French Dutch German. but as far as i know his motherlanguage is Dutch.
He might be from Brussels because most people can speak both French and Dutch there 😊

The Budgeteers Those 5 pesos are super tiny and you need like 6-8 of them, but yeah Costa Rica is brutal expansive. The first time I was there in 2001 and it was crazy cheap, 2 beers for 500 colonies in a restaurant.

How the hell am I going to do this from the United States? I highly doubt that I'll be able to hitchhike from Atlanta GA to anywhere near Costa Rica. If anyone has suggestions, I'm very open to them
Same comment as jack, you guys did great on the entire video presentation! I am much older then you guys, been to over 40 countries. Couch surfing is great and you do get to have some interaction with the locals! I have said this to many in my travels, you must try the local foods, talk to young people to where to get cheap food, cheap beer, and cheap or free fun! They know you just have to ask them! To me traveling is just an adventure, fun, and exciting. You really never know what you are confronted with, until you get there. You guys had mentioned the shit hole, the Caribbean side is that way! Not all of it am sure. Keep up the good work, keep traveling have fun, make the most of every opportunity, make friends, be wise, use your previous experiences as a tool to assist you in your decision making travels. And lastly, pray to God for a hedge of protection, there is evil lurking. Be wise as a snake!

I just want to point out you showed your skype information on the video. I don't know the full details of this, but I've seen people leaking skype info getting hacked/hijacked in the past - something with how you can use a Skype ID to locate someone's ISP/information. Maybe blur that out? Not sure how it all works, but from my experience skype information leads to the ability to get hacked.

ID name is all you need, that can be used to find the information linked to the ID (email, phone number, ip address ect..) something with how skype has public records. Not sure how it works like I said before, just that a skype ID is all someone needs to hack/get your information.
It's probably not as big of a problem on youtube, but it's a huge thing on streaming, where someone would accidentally tab into their Skype for half a second and the next day have a hundred phone calls to their house, a hooker and take out / pizza ordered from every local store within a 10km radius, with all of their personal information posted on reddit.

Really you need to make new seasons I hope you will make the New season based on poor countries so I can see the beatifull things of that kind of countries.
we have made series in poor countries before such as Cambodia, Nicaragua and Honduras ... poor in monetary terms....not i terms of beauty or nature :)
A true challenge for your trip no spend a lot money in CR...there all are expensive. If you have a lot money you enjoy CR because is a high turist country and they want your money..$$$. I was there and I shock when I bought a bottle water for $1.60..the same water in my country cost $0.75. So for back packer is hard to go to some expensive place...but CR is a beautiful, clean and frienly country.
