Needles Subdivision Railfanning

Action along the Needles Subdivision is high speed, constant and always a treat to experience! Our cameras traveled out to the Needles Subdivision on multiple occasions to get other trains, and this footage is a compilation of the non-Heritage units found out on the Needles Subdivision between May and July of this year! Trains at Essex, Ludlow, Trojan, and more are all seen, so enjoy the show!

A former bnsf c44-9w? Rare thing to catch on a bnsf intermodal. I find it rare to see, as well as a bnsf train having a norfolk southern unit as the helper unit. I have no clue on why bnsf is solding some of their c44-9w's.

They're actually quite common because of how many DASH 9s BNSF had leased as opposed to bought during the early 2000s. They're not selling them, they're just choosing not to buy the units when their leases expire. For what purpose during a motive power crunch I don't know, but BNSF management has found it better to let the leases expire and then lease them back from GE when they're returned. I think probably close to 400 of them have been retired off the roster and either sold to KCS (whose fleet is mostly in storage right now wearing patched H2 paint, which admittedly looks very nice), 5(?) were sold to the Arizona and California and the rest were sent to GE who leased them back to BNSF.
From what I'm aware BNSF is currently using NS rebuilt AC44C6M units as testing fodder for their own potential rebuild program with Wabtec since no north American railroad wants to purchase Tier IV units anymore. Until battery engines or hydrogen fuel cell tech becomes widespread we're in essence going to see just rebuilt units in place of new ones, so that's a dynamic happening as well.

I cannot, as that is not allowed on most trains in America anymore after 9/11. I may be able to at museums but not on revenue freight trains.
