    I love watching your videos too. I was born and raised a city girl and the only thing I knew about cows was that I wanted a brown one so I could have chocolate milk as a kid 😊😊. The Chocolate milk cow made me smile*
      I had a supervisor born and raised in Los Angeles.
      She was in her forties before she learned milk came from cows!
      She just thought it came from factories! 😅
      One does not always realize with many that never leave the city. Many agricultural things never entered their minds.
      She was really sweet and I always loved that story. 😉

    Nate, ever since I started watching your videos, TH-cam has been recommending other trimmers to me. It seems like so many other trimmers almost seem to disregard (or even enjoy) the cows' pain. One in particular stood out - in which the entire outer horn of a claw looked like it had sloughed off in a single piece. How do you handle extreme examples like that? How are you supposed to handle those?
    Thanks so much for your kindness and empathy. Keep doing what you're doing.

    • @NatetheHoofGuy

  • @mrpeace6107
    @mrpeace6107 ปีที่แล้ว

    Like Nate was mentioning the "corkscrew" claw may not have been the overarching cause but it was the "vehicle" for this issue to form. Take a human foot for example, try rotating your ancle inwards towards your center line and attempt to walk on it. (Don't do that of course you will break your foot) But do that only add 1100 pounds to your weight and you will begin to understand the issue. A cow's foot is so designed to take the animals weight and spread it to the surface effectively. If you upset "that balance" you create "instability" in the foot, this instability creates pressure points that cause bruising within the anatomy of the cow's hoof or "claw". This pressure created bruse then propagates from the Coffin Bone to the outside of the center of that claw thus creating discomfort. The "modeling" that Nate does is to remove the pressure point from the middle of the hoof to the hoof wall which is designed to transfer the weight of the animal to the ground. With this trim Nate is removing a white line defect which was complicated by that corkscrew claw. Of course, he has to remove a section of the "weight barring" outer wall horn but that's why he puts on a block to transfer the weight from the effected claw to the other claw allowing the issue to heal. When he mentioned the importance of maintenace trimming, even with that it is effectively impossible to outwardly prevent these issues. The goal of any cattle farmer (my family included) is to catch these issues and correct them before they become a threat to the health of the animal. My family has been in the cattle business for 5 generations now and we have heard all the stories that farmers don't care about our animals, or we out right mistreat them. I have seen the bill we pay for our families hoof trimming team, if we didn't care we would not spend roughly 8% of our farm's income on the services. The fact is farmers care greatly about their animal's health and we spend tens of thousands of dollars a year on for their benefit. And its hoof trimming professionals like Nate here that keep us not only profitable but our animals in good health. If anyone here is a fan of "The Witcher" series, you will understand the saying "toss a coin to your Witcher". Well, "Toss a coin to your Trimmer" cause guys like Nate make it possible for farmers like me to provide milk, meat, and all the other dairy products you all enjoy. 🪙

    I am quite impressed with how you care for these beauties. How long have you been doing this? Did you go to school to learn how to care for them or did you learn under somebody?

    Loved the fast forward and the zoom in! 👍

    There is something oddly hypnotic about seeing the hoof get trimmed and seeing the opening climb up the hoof. I guess that is just a misunderstanding that these are not flat, 2d surfaces, but 3d objects. The "hole" is more like a diagonal line, and we are just seeing the "bottom" of that line, but it can be traced up into the hoof.
