Man, I am impressed!! That you would even go back to try to find that bolt says a lot about you. To actually find it? in the dark? Yea. That's what I'm talkin about. Good job
I wanted to definitely find the original bolt that showed the wear on it so that the shop wouldn't try to blame me for anything. I'm so glad the threads on it were unharmed. It could have gotten trapped under a moving vehicle and dragged and the bolt would have been damaged or bent but fortunately that didn't happened. I'm also glad it didn't fall into a sewer drain. I know I could replace the bolt if necessary, but then they'd be wondering why I would be bringing them a new bolt to put in my car. I just wanted to have the original bolt so they could just put it back in and that would be the end of it.
Similar thing in the 90's, had Sears Auto Center replace front struts and they failed to install the top bolts (didn't notice the problem as plastic caps covered these bolts) and on that first bump one side popped out on the highway. Bad enough but then Sears tried to deny the problem. Had a friend have his ATF changed at one of these quick lube type places and they put in the wrong fluid causing a transmission failure, Ford type F was supposed to be used but wasn't.
Years ago, my sister had a shop top off her windshield wiper fluid. She drove home and discovered that they put in pink transmission fluid instead of wiper fluid. She quickly drove back and had them rectify the problem. My other sister took her Corolla to the dealership for an oil change. Afterwards, I discovered an oil leak in her driveway. The idiots didn't properly tighten the oil drain plug and the car had leaked out about a quart of oil after a few days of her driving around. Good thing I caught that oil leak. I quickly tightened the drain plug and added the proper amount of oil. The car only had 9,000 miles on it and was only 3 years old at the time. Years later, she took it to another shop for some sort of service (I can't remember what) and the mechanic told her that the car was leaking oil and that she needed a new oil pan. She declined the repair and drove home (about 2 blocks from the shop) and called me. She told me that they said there was a hole in the oil pan. I told her to go look under the car for any oil stains. She said it was completely dry underneath the car. I arrived at her house later and checked under the car and also checked the oil level. The car was fine. I told her the car was full of oil. She responded by saying that the shop lied to her and those people were "full of shit." I then told her that they were trying to take advantage of her and rip her off. I then told her never to go back to that place again.
I don't see any thread locker on that bolt.😅
That's why I work on every one of my vehicles with everything I do not trust mechanics to do the right job today! And I do not buy a vehicle that I cannot work on or have any knowledge on it!
TBH, I feel it's nearly impossible to check this kind of things. Have to hope they do their job.
