    I transferred to UCSC from a CC ! I got into UCLA but UCSC brings so much life to me. UCSC has it all the nature, people, diversity, and not a so competitive atmosphere. I am a junior right now and so far it is great! The professors are amazing and although it is not a high-rank UC like Berkeley or UCLA, it is still a college and a UC! This school does not even compare to UCB or UCLA because those schools only care about your money where as UCSC cares about there students

      Omg I am a CC student looking at UCD and UCSC right now. I need to TAG with one or the other. Do you mind if I ask what major you are? And if the school has helped you with what you aspire to do after college?

      @@jasminehurtado7161 yes I am a sociology major and ucsc is so nice with tons of programs and classes that are offered for my major. Ahh yes I am guilty of thinking like this back in high school. I also remember that my high school was sooo competitive and going to schools like UCSC or UCR or UCM meant that you weren’t that great in your studies 😖 And then now, realizing that college itself is a privilege!! I’m sooo happy you’re sharing this and that you had an amaaazing time at UCSC! education is education, and now companies are looking for job experience & personality, not what school you went to. Thanks for sharing!! ☺️

      Yes exactly!! I wish I could have gone back in time to tell my high school self that every college is a privilege, because then I wouldn't have taken some VERY useless AP classes LOL thanks so much for watching girl, I really appreciate it!! 🥰

    Ah, watching this brings back so many memories of my high school days where everyone wanted to go to the "best" college when it didn't really matter. I agree that being able to go to college is a privilege. Thank you for the reminder. :') UCSC is beautiful. I love all the nature there!

    • @lifeofcarolyn
      @lifeofcarolyn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I feel like that mindset back in high school was so toxic 😓 In a way, it felt like you were really just competing against all of your friends to go to these "top" schools. It's crazy to know that everything will actually turn out just fine, no matter what college you go to (unless you have mountains of student debt 😬).

  • @olivias2560
    @olivias2560 3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    Your high school sounds identical to mine. All competitive California high school students must have the same mindset about the UC system... Even the kids with 3.8-4.0s will be rejected from UCs and that comes to a surprise to a lot of people, and it did for me honestly. I underestimated the number of qualified applicants I would be going against. As a junior I would’ve looked down on someone who only got into UCSC, UCR, or UCM, because those are seen as easy schools to get into where I live. The mindset of going to a competitive high school is sort of like, “if you don’t get into a school with an acceptance rate under 35% you might as well just got to a community college and transfer as a junior.”

    • @lifeofcarolyn
      @lifeofcarolyn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My high school was basically like that...everyone had like 3.8-4.0+ and took tons of AP classes and extracurriculars and somehow still had time to volunteer. I used to be part of that group that would look down at people who went to UCSC, UCR, or UCM, but it was after going to UCSC that I realized that going to any college is a privilege. Looking back, it's probably a miracle that I got into UCSC then, because I don't think I'd be able to get in with the same stats today 😅

      @@Accnews_ Hi there! I would say that the most popular dorms for CS is either C9/10 or Crown College (on a hill). C9/10 may be better as it's closer to the engineering buildings/library, but Crown College has a specific residence hall for the computer science game design major.
      It is true that you will save a LOT of money if your son goes to a CC then transfers to UCSC.
      If you live in California, I think that community colleges actually guarantee that you'll be able to transfer into one of the UC's as long as you complete the prerequisites that they ask of you.

Another one is San Jose State but looking at the website of UC Santa Cruz makes me wanna go even though college ended for me over 25 years ago, haha, the environment looks peaceful, although the housing situation is something she has reservations about. My daughter will be in her senior year this fall and is already tired of some of her high school friend's teen relationship drama, lol. She is ready to meet new people. I would recommend staying on campus and not doing the whole living downtown thing. So much violence down there. But the campus is very safe. My story is a little different but I feel like sharing so here it is haha
    My high school was competitive as well but as long as you go to a UC, you’re like “cool” and “qualified”. I mean Berkeley and LA is like superior and ideal but as long as it was a UC, then you’re good to go. The city I live in is a 15min drive to Irvine so everyone’s ideal was UCI to save on dorms and stuff cuz commuting is cheaper so Irvine was the ideal and the next closest after that would be San Diego which is about 1hr away. One school that was everyone’s safety was CSULB, because it was a cal state and “everyone gets in” so if you go to Cal State Long Beach people just shrug their shoulders and ignore you :/// this is where I go right now and tbh….. I do get that shameful feeling and it bothers me still to this day even though I’m a second year, almost halfway done with my second year. However, actually studying at Long Beach, I really like it here, the weather is nice, the beach is close, and it’s a pretty cool place to be. Some of my professors teach at UCs (so they only teach part time at Long Beach) so I am getting that UC experience but at a cheaper price soooooo who’s the winner now? Haha. Yea one of my professor used to teach at UCLA and he had such highhhhhh standards for my class but I did well in it and it felt so good. And then my anatomy professor teaches part time at Long Beach and then her other part time job is being a MEDICAL school professor at UCI school if medicine. Sooo I’ve met some amazing people and am getting a good education I believe. Yes college is what you make of it and if I spend my entire four years being ashamed… that’s kind of a waste….. and also it is a privilege to be here so I wanna make the most of it :))))
    Thank you for reading my story

    It’s so funny-back when I went (Class of ‘91), UCSC had less than 6,000 students, it didn’t have grades, and it was very selective because of the size and its status as the “UC alternative school”. Hi there! I would recommend talking to people from each school that you got accepted to and if possible, safely tour the campus. I visited UW's campus, and it was really nice so I might've chosen that over UCSC. It really depends on where you see yourself going, the school's programs/majors, and what you're looking for in a school (sports teams, scenery, things to do, etc.)
      I would say that as my 4 years went by, UCSC's campus/buses/classes got MUCH more crowded (as mentioned in my video) so it's hard for me to recommend it now. However, if you do end up going to UCSC, I think you would enjoy it :)
