Now this is the kind of railroading that I like! Back when railroading in California was truely awesome! Trains today will never be as cool as the good ol' days!
I can vaguely recall as a small child my dad walking with me down to the railroad tracks on San Fernando Road in Glendale to see the trains go by. I can remember them saying let's go see the Choo Choo train and I was ready to go. This would have been around 1953 as we moved to the Sunland Tujunga area in 1954. Almost got killed at Chevy Chase and the railroad tracks in 1969 when the signal arm failed to lower and I just missed the train by about 20 feet. Wish they would bring back train travel like it was in the 50s.
@@bonkeydollocks1879 Don't worry, we've still got some great stuff here. The freight lines are spectacular in the right places, and Amtrak trains as well as local commuter services are still amazing to see. If you come to the US soon, enjoy your time here :)
Opening street sot featured a Chevy Corvair in front of the bus. A really great car, vilified unnecessarily by Ralph Vader. I owned one in my late teens, and loved it. Way ahead of its time with its air cooled engine.
Had two nice intercity depots in Atlanta back then: the large, Spanish Mission-styled Terminal Station featured Southern Railway System, Atlanta and West Point, Central of Georgia and Seaboard Air Line passenger trains. Union Station, a block away, was a Beaux Arts-styled depot, served by Atlantic Coast Line, Georgia Railroad and Louisville and Nashville trains. Both were razed in 1972. Atlanta has no romance for it's past.
Goddamn this is surreal to watch. It's so hard to believe passenger rail service was this widespread, this elegant, and this big. That there were Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, and ATSF passenger rail lines, all with long consists and beautiful engines, and even steam power working along the side. It was all bound to die eventually, but it's a shame regardless.
Agreed, locomotives are more powerful and efficient than ever before. But they're soulless creations now, and every railroad in the US runs the same models. No need for railfans to travel anymore--like Walmart, the railroad scene is universal coast to coast now.
This was really nice, especially seeing those covered wagons. Is there a video/DVD that showcases the 1960s? Would like to see shots of those Santa Fe FP45s pulling the Super Chief/El Capitan
I loved this style of diesel engine back then. Thought it was sexy when I didn't know a damn thing about sex. I loved how the headlight circled round-and-round at night. Often wondered if it made the cab crew seasick.
The EMD made the best Cab and Booster diesels. Hands down. The Fs are freaking awesome. Also, what was that switcher piloting the UP ABBA set over Cajon?
Technology was better in the past! Downtown to San Berdu(San Bernardino) in 42(minutes)! was the slogan of the trolleys. Good luck getting from downtown to san berdu in less than 3 hours today....
Damn it, you guys... I'd expect this kind of crappy posting on other video topics here, but railfan-related? Come on. I'm really disgusted - knock it off. Guys like you ruin TH-cam.
This DVD is one of my top five all-time favorites for transition-era Video. Fantastic variety and filming and excellent narration and audio.

These Are My Favorite Railroads
A train fan for life! A wonderful review of the great trains from the past. Thank You!

When America was great!
The good ole' days! Another great video production, thanks.
This is grandma forever
Love it, I need to visit the states. Bucket list.
Sadly, the passenger rail lines are but a faded shadow of what they once were.
@@loki3523 yes I think I had my rose tinted spectacles on
@@loki3523 still get drawn to the states, doing the family tree recently
The US of A features prominently

@@loki3523 I will do, as long as you don't have too many efficient plastic modern boxes for trains like here in the UK 😁
I wish to be born in the 1930's with the cameras we have today! lol
Another beautifully produced, important historical document by Pentrex. Bravo!
GREAT JOB!!! I love that mid century footage
Two ATSF EMC E1's!
[sigh]...I wish i was born in the 1950's.
I visited the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, WI. It was a great experience. So this is how I ended up here.

2:04 it’s the train that yeeted it’s self through the buffers (I think)
Classic F7s were always the best!
Love that ATSF F7AB passenger!
+TheBoshMeister99 I love AT&SF F7 ABBA on the Super Chief too!

The ATSF E1s were possibly some of the greatest diesel locomotives ever designed.
Insane that you can make a full dvd from a single day of rail fanning in the 1950’s now you can’t find crap in a single day
Those were good times for rail days in Los angeles
BRAVO MAESTRO *****
VERY..VERY...GOOD.

Now that was a fantastic video
I love trains!
I love your video
wow, great footage!
OH! I just realized the Santa Fe's original E1 was on here.
Love the super chief Santa fe is the best!
Nice video. I liked and subbed to your channel
Modern Trains dont suck, but i still think that railroads were at there peak in the late 50's and early 60's

Steamers have class
Steam and Diesel on Santa Fe, Southern Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads.
All those individuals except that baby are long gone. Something to ponder.

@MSNWindows7...actually, those are Santa Fe El Capitan high-level cars. Amtrak used the design as the initial concept for the Superliners.
The EMD made the best Cab and Booster diesels. Hands down. The Fs are freaking awesome.
Also, what was that switcher piloting the UP ABBA set over Cajon?
That's an Alco RS-1
Thanks. Also, I changed my opinion here. After almost a year, I actually like the ALCO Cabs better.
It's not an RS-1, the top sides are too rounded and it has 3 axel trucks. It's actually an RSC-2.
Alco rsc 2
There is a scene in this video with the Super Chief going 90mph from the cab.
American Passenger Trains in those days were best American Passenger Trains.
raildesigner this was shot in the 1950s the gevos were not around at that time although the video eas just released.
what is it that makes trains look so cool?
On the subject, I'd also rewrite the Esch cummins act so the ATSF gets the Frisco and the SP gets the Rock Island.
And that's just the start.

Somebody please post the segment in this video that has a camera in the cab of a F-unit on the Super Chief going 90 mph.

I paid $50 for that DVD!!!!
railfan101, you are correct, sad but true
1951 kick ass

Check the hobo out at 3:05 sitting in the gondola going around tehachapi on the Southern Pacific
Man this train is very old
Were any of the steam locomotives preserved
Having seen the program myself, I'll say that one of them did
But I'm not gonna say which one >w
Yes, an SP Cab Forward, one and only one, preserved at California Railroad Museum Sacramento. The others in this film, not too sure.
Sorry, I see enough commercials on TV...
Thats caus' it was filmed in Soledad Canyon.
BUENOS RECUERDOS DEL FERROCARRIL POR AREAS HURBANAS . . . !

Harry Balzak but they didn’t have iPhones back then ;( so our technology is better
Metrolink has run a hour and a half schedule from LA-San Berdoo since 1993. The worst schedule is around 2 hours.
and if the video from the 1910's with horse and buggies, you would say "so much house sh*t".
Someone please use AI to upscale this to 4K 60fps
PERRY MASON.
The railroads sure aren’t what they used to be :(
theUP844 yeah there only like 2 years old, there not 56-years old
ha! i get it, "hot spots"
