Rusty Old Hammer Restoration - New Wooden Handle

- I found this old hammer head and decided to give it a face lift and a new handle. This had previously been on a fibreglass handle that my builder brother had snapped, its been sitting out behind the shed for a few years now and had become quite rusty. After polishing the head I made a new handle from Ash.

Wow I’m amazed at all of the kind comments! This was my first ever video, I thought it’d be fun to try! I have a few others now and am enjoying making them so subscribe if you’d like to see more! ☺️
What kind of hammer was that, and how much did the head weight?
David Parker
Beautiful build! Great choice of wood for the handle, and it turned out perfect. Way to rep the name!
Sell it to me
David Parker really good job I would love to see more ur on the road of 1 million subs keep up the excellent work I have subbed and turned on the bell for next vid
U
I so enjoy watching the old be made new again. Thank you for the video.
Definitely the best hammer restoration video I’ve ever watched
Chopper Dan wow thanks so much kind stranger who I do not know
David Parker I’m just a regular guy on the internet who loves hammers
This is/was amazing. The end result is better than some new hammers from stores, great job. For a first video, you did a really great job, I love the fast forward and the sounds.
Has to be one of the most beautiful hammer head restoration I have seen yet!!!!!!
I have, and still use, that exact hammer. From an old railroader. The steel is super hard and will chip with hard use.
Very nice. The finished product is amazing. Love the wooden handle.
FOR IT TO BE YOUR FIRST,I TIP MY HAT TO YOU MAN ,IT,S A GREAT RESTORATION AND VIDEO ,KEEP THEM COMING .

Handle install very clean. Golf Clap. Might need a bit more dome on ends to keep non-perfect strikes from making eyebrows or in this case squarebrows in the struck material. I'm sure there are smiths who strike so clean and consistent they can rock a hammer like that.
I really like how you used wood wedges to secure the hammer head ...I do not use metal wedges unless I have to or maybe use them on a big sledge hammer or splitting maul
Can you fix my life like you fixed this hammer?😂😂😂😂
You have a very understanding spouse; when I bring my projects in to scrub them off my neighbors 5 miles down the road can hear and see the reaction; there is usually a mushroom cloud.
Nice finishing
Beautiful work. Can’t wait to see your next project!
This is so good! If you take requests would love to see a rusty trumpet restoration sometime!
well done, i like the way you sand and finish it!
How long did it have to sit in the vinegar? I am going to see if my boyfriend can do the same with an old hammerhead I have. Mine is shaped slightly different. I really enjoyed watching this video!
Lovely job well done😊
Made beautiful and useful again. Nice work.
Well done, man!
Thank you!
Fantastic 👍good job 👏
Nice restoration!
Great restoration..its a shame you had to grind off the original markings on steel..that's always a challenge
Beautiful job!
Good video David!
Looks brand new. 👍
Nice job! I am wondering why some handles have a step where the head rested and some have a ever expanding taper. I just put a hickory handle on my sledge hammer and it had the taper. I am a little worried I did not quite get the head to rest on the widest part of that shoulder. Even though tight even before inserting the wedges I should have sanded the end of the handle I think. What do you think go or no go on the handle?
Nice job!
Exellent. Only the handle should be from oldest wood possible. 😊
I understand what vinager does but I don't understand why people use it then grind the metal until mirror finish. Am I missing something here? Enjoyed watching your video and keep them restorations coming.
Boostwerx well I wasn’t really sure how it was going to turn out with the vinegar but then also I couldn’t really get into where the logo is or the eye so I guess it was helpful with that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
How heavy is the hammer and what kind of wood did you use?
Great job! I wish I could do handles as good as that!
What type of wood was used for the handle. I've got around 6 or 7 old hammer heads that I've been wanting to clean up and put handles on. Naturally lowes, home depot and northern tools dont sell handles anymore. I assume they want you to buy a new hammer. But funk that I want my old ones working again. Just not sure what type of wood will best the strongest. Thanks in advance if you'll reply!
C A I used Ash, which seems to be quite common, but hickory makes a good handle too apparently!
@@DavidParker good deal thanks! Yea I know hickory is common with hammer handles. I could tell it wasnt hickory that you used by the grain. Once you oiled it. I think I'll give ashwood a try. You did a hell of a job to thats a beautiful hammer. I'm a newbie at blacksmithing and I'm acquiring all the tools gradually. That would be a hell of a flattening hammer you got there! 👍
Liked it and Loved David!
Nice job
Great job!
Great job man.
How do you only have 490 subs? This content is legit
Gekko14 haha I’m pretty new to this!
David Parker keep it up dude this stuff is great
Ur on the road of a million subs
You nailed it!
Nicholas Coyle some might say I hammered it...
I have one just like this I've used for years to split wood (hitting a wedge). the steel is very brittle and the hammer face will chip off sometimes
Take the handle off and put it in the oven, temper it back a bit
I know that this is late but dont do what he said. The hammer head is likely already heat treated properly but it is just been mushroomed over and work hardened so you'll have to grind those bits off
great job! beautiful hammer.
And heavy hammer need to place from the handle, to not fly it to somebody standing from behind or infront :D
Very nice. Looks like a tiny mjolnir.
yeah because you really know how the hammer of Thor looks like.. no human has ever seen it so dont come with here that
@@RikkiTheRose Poppycock! I saw the movies. That looks just like the movie prop but tiny without the squiggly lines on the side. And the leather strap..... And Chris Hemmsworth (Thor) at the other end... So I quess with IMAGINATION it looks like it. But LITERALLY you are probably correct.
Beautiful
Great job, David. I noticed you used the oil on both handle and head. What kind of oil is that? Thanks
Mmm so satisfying. Well done!
Martin Paris thanks Martin!
@@DavidParker czne.
Just watched your video, very nice job 👍,
Nicely done. Subbing for the next restoration
Loved it!
Thanks for this work 👍
your videos are really good quality! its a shame you dont have alot of subscribers tho. keep up the great work!
Bravissimo 👏👏👏
MAESTRO BUEN TRABAJO CON EL MARTILLO
Very nice job i like it.
Beautiful. What kind of hammer is that and what it used for. Looks like you've done that before, a lot. LOL!
Bravo. Chapeau
Sweet restore, Bro! I like to "gun blue" my restores just for rust resistance. Ever tried that stuff? (Plus it looks cool ;)) Nice work
Which Vice Clamp do?
very nice
What wood did you use to make the handle.
ZOMBIE FOX GAME American Ash
Cool🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍
10:00 ohoo the money shot.
Lol
I'm not sure why so many people seem to think the hammer head needs to sit against a "shelf" of sorts built into the handle. It should be a tapered fit that gets tighter the more it's driven on, and the wedge creates an opposite taper to lock it in place. A proper made hammer eye is shaped like an hourglass. Making an abrupt shelf not only prevent the head from being fully tightened, and creates a stress point where the handle is most likely to break. Just trying to be helpful; I've hung many hammers, axes, and other handled tools over the years, and it has taken experience, both good and bad, to learn this.
thank you for not putting a damned aluminum handle on it like so many of these hot dog types are doing now. Good job, good video
Very interesting
What is the content of the can? 9:00
Green Cock Tung Oil
Why not a better choice of wood for the handle? Something that yells hard work. Looks a bit long in proportion to the steel head or is this now a purely decorative item? Just wondering with all that work you put into it one day you might need to give something a good whack or clobber and a shorter, thicker stouter handle would let that tool run as a fantastic club-hammer it’s meant to be.
There aren't many better options than ash and a longer handle allows for a harder strike with less energy.
Dont let your hammer get rusty men!
wyhy dont you grind it the first time? haha
I can dig it
Nice Video g
V good 👍👍👏👏👏💎
LINDA !

Old???
raffaele vasta it is probably about ten year old the mark on the cast is common in newer hammers.
Where is Groot when you need him
When make the cut for the wedge your not supposed to go that deep and you only make one cut not two
tinny blacksmith because this hammer head was made for a fibreglass handle the hole tapers in both directions, so yes this is not a traditional hammer fit but it works for this particular head.
@@DavidParker yes that is called an hour Glass eye I was tough to make one pre cut going parallel to the head and just above bottom of the head than use a wood wedge along with a steel wedge across altho your way makes sense as well
Beautifull and well done. But the handle is too long for this type of hammer
Bravoooooooooooooo
That folks IS WHY a hammer handle costs OVER $20 in your local hardware store, and why i own 10 hammer heads with NO HANDLES..
Hahaha It was a fun project... not sure I'd want to do 10 in a row though!
It is a cheap project to make a video for a beginning TH-cam channel. Plus, lots of young people watch these videos. They want to learn how to work with their hands. These types of videos show them how to start learning on easily available things. Not to mention he can buy several hammers with the views it will likely get.
@hetrodoxly the point of the video isn't money, it's to show the method to people especially young people.
man just let people enjoy things, its a video on the internet for fucks sake
