TIP: Sometimes when I feel like I can't do self care or if negative/intrusive thoughts and habits come to mind, I imagine a fictional character (or a family member, or friend can work for you) telling me to slow down, take a breathe and reassess. Personally I think of Baymax from big hero six as being my own personal health care assistant and I bought a mini pop vinyl key ring of him, so i can take it with me everywhere (which sort of ties in with something familiar)
Also this video was so cute and much needed!

Yesterday I was feeling really shitty, but I go to the gym every day and I really like the routine, and by the time I was driving home I thought to myself 'I can't remember when I stopped thinking about why I was feeling shit.' I didn't have to try to think about something else, it just happened, and it was so nice to be in such a good mood without even trying.

"It is an interesting biological fact that all of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears.
We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea--whether it is to sail or to watch it--we are going back from whence we came."

I LOVE how simple and seemingly easy these suggestions are. I've come to really appreciate a glass of water or a freaking shower now that I have a baby and my own needs come second. I have totally shifted to a place where things I used to barely notice are now so important for my mental and physical health - because it sucks when I go a while without being able to do them.
Thank you both for sharing these with us! This is so lovely and positive.

For people with eating disorders getting food, or making meals and such can be quite the struggle which would eventually result in an even worse mood. I do appreciate the other tips though but what works for me as someone with bulimia is to make a list of what you are going to eat that day (or make a list for days you're feeling bad in general) so that there's least amount of stress possible involving your food and make you less likely to binge. Because the days I'm feeling worst are often the days I start binging on stuff, and when you have a list there and a sort of "plan" you can follow, the temptation is less there because you have a sort of comfort in knowing when and what you are going to eat. Thought this might be helpful for anyone struggling with bulimia or maybe any other eating disorder.

Rosianna Halse Rojas No problem! Happy to hear you're in recovery, I've only recently started getting help and seeing a therapist, but it's actually videos like these, (and videos such as yours on body image) that motivate me to get better and take care of myself, and remind me I'm not on my own, so thank you!

Discovering Lucy is possibly the best thing that's happened to me in such a long time. Lucy, your videos have saved me so so many times this past month and I'm so grateful videos like these exist - finally there's a youtuber who's real about issues we all have, but you don't sit and complain about it being a limit, you show how we can work through it together and improve ourselves.
So thank you Lucy. Thanks for giving me hope.

I appreciate this because people often think self care = "treat yo self" which... ya, it is. But that hard day to day self-care is shit like brushing your teeth and making yourself a meal. Basic but when you're depressed... that ish is hard work.

  • @adammullan5904
    @adammullan5904 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Something that helps me a lot is listening to the same song on repeat, the reason being that if I have an album or playlist going, my mind starts to stress about how many songs are accumulating without me doing what I need to do, whereas with one song times infinity, it doesn't take long to lose track of how long I've been listening, and so it becomes a state of being, and a more determined and productive one at that. I suppose it's the same principle as the HP audiobooks, since there are familiar inflections/beats to it. I especially like a song where it's easy to ignore where the start/end happens so that there are no replays I can subconsciously accumulate

This just spoke to my soul in such a enormous way. I am feeling like sh*t, and yesterday was a bed day for me. Today, I went on a run, bought some groceries to make dinner and as i was pouring myself a cup of water just before taking a shower, I watched this video!!!! also it's important to mention if you can't afford to spend money on therapy (like at all) being on a waiting list with the nhs is worth it, even though it can seem like forever (mine took a year of screening processes) and you are able to acess places like mind whilst your waiting, google search what is in your area like groups or clubs, sessions, meet ups usually they do all this in 'mind' but there are other charity's that cater for mental health that are either more specific or more generalised but worth putting yourself out there for recovery, start now! great video lucy, you two are cuties :)

    • @joannasaunders2179
      @joannasaunders2179 7 ปีที่แล้ว

A therapist isn't right for everyone but people can still benefit from working on themselves (i think this is everybody) or using self-care skills which lucy and rosianna were talking about in the video but if you are feeling down alot or anxious alot or feeling one emotion too strongly it might be worth seeking a bit of advice from someone you trust, and if you say you don't want help and you have a problem, many people including myself have been through this and you have to be ready to want and then recieve help, hope everything is okay and you are able to benefit from this video, if you have any questions about anything, the internet is here for you!

It's not healthy for the skin to shower every day, you're destroying the natural acid coat and it will not be able to protect itself from the bad environmental influences and become less capable of moisturizing itself. Just saying, if you never heard of it before, Google it. There is a point where hygiene obsession gets paranoid :D

I found that sitting and watching an episode of a tv show that I fully know the plot to, and can quote entire lines from, really calms my anxiety and makes me take time to relax. It's the same with movies and even certain TH-cam videos. Anxiety and school are not things that go well together, but setting goals for lessons to conquer or times to reach before 'quitting' or leaving a lesson to sit in the corridor to calm down makes me feel more accomplished about being there in the first place.

Audiobook wise I listen to the Alex rider audio books (got the box set) and I always listened to them as a kid. And it's a massive comfort now. To fall asleep too if I'm having lots of thoughts cause it distracts me and I don't need to worry about falling asleep in it or drifting off from the story cause I know them all off by heart. It's so comforting to slip out of my daze and come back to a familiar voice and narrative. I really really recommend it. Just play it out loud quietly in your bedroom at night!

In regards to the calling a friend and telling them how you're feeling, I always feel like I'm bringing them down and that I shouldn't put it on them or bother them with it. It's not them, definitely a me thing, but I don't know how to get past that, which makes it so I usually just keep it to myself. Have you felt like this and if so how did/do you stop feeling like you're just bothering people?

If they're people you see regularly, tell them to bother you if they feel like you're not okay. Tell them you might sometimes need somebody to pull you out of bed when you don't have the energy to call them or are worried to bother them. Somebody who knows you have a rough time so they can call you from time to time to check up on you. In my personal experience, that can really help.

Every thing you've mentioned Lucy I agree with. Water, clean teeth and I shower are a must. My own suggestions are clean bedsheets if you can be bothered, and because I hate going for walks without purpose, I found that it always helps me to go to my local cinema. Combines having to look presentable, walking and then closing yourself away from the world in a dark room, where a story can take over your mind for a couple of hours. Not feasible for everyone, I know, but it's my go to on these kind of days. much love xx

I went to a counselor who was AWFUL and kept trying to make me think I hate my family? The entire thing was uncomfortable and unhelpful. My second choice was MUCH better and we had a lot in common, which made it easy to talk openly. It really is so beneficial to look into multiple options when choosing a therapist or counselor!

You guys are very authentic and right in what you're saying. I enjoy your videos very much.
Currently I am in a very depressed and self-destructive mood. My body longs for water so much but somehow I don't allow myself to dring or eat healthy stuff which would make me feel at least physical better. Instead I don't drink, I eat ONLY sugar and disgusting junkfood that Iiterally can't see anymore and makes me throw up. So by purging I lose even more water. I'm in delirium the whole time and do nothing besides being in bed like a half-dead animal waiting for its death.

krispy noodle Hi there! First of all thank you for sharing your experience with me. I really appreciate it and even more I'm really happy that u were able to manage to get yourself out of this place! That's huge thing you've managed.
I do already know what you've tried to tell me but unfortunately seems like I am not like you, I don't have the strength to pull myself out of this place. My self-destructive mood is so huge that doesn't allow me to pull myself out. I'm suffering but still I chose every single minute to stay in this miserable place. That's what my depression and self-destructive behaviour do to me!
      Nevertheless thanks.

luticia really sorry to hear about your situation, it must be terrible to be stuck in the depression. But at the same time, thank you too for sharing. A lot of the comments I've read have been about how people have coped/are going to change. But I think your experience is really important to hear too. People have been lovely and want to be supportive here, but I guess we're actually a bit powerless to help. But that's just the nature of this particular depression - maybe it's like a spiral that re-enforces itself from your feelings and actions. When you're in it nothing can break you out, not even the most positive of suggestions. And I feel that's important for us to be aware of when we'd like to support someone with depression.
Right now I think all we can do is listen, so please do keep sharing whenever you feel up to it!

I recently realized if I think about caring for myself from the perspective of someone who loves me (example: my grandma), it completely turns my level of care around. She'd always want me to shower, make my hair look presentable, eat a healthy meal, get some fresh air, and go to bed at a decent time. Oh, and a little dessert after dinner is always ok in her book. Thinking this way is a game changer for me.

The Harry Potter audiobooks are what got me through some of my hardest days!
Also the part about being worth a meal. And though I hat to shower when I feel bad, it does help.

I seriously LOVE this community, so many sweet hilarious comments...i can see why though, you guys are amazing and you attract the best audience ❤ Also, all of us benefit from therapy...I give therapy and I am also flexible with prices, I love that other people can do that too!

Just a note; Not every country has therapists who have the freedom of sliding scales. In The Netherlands I think for the most part it is set, also within health insurance (first 4/6 sessions by a noted psychologist get paid by health insurance).
Although, I graduate as an Applied Psychologist next year and I would love to do something with this. It seems way more logical. Maybe if I'd go under the name of 'coach' (which is, just as psychologist, not protected).
And also, thanks! I just started listening to the same podcast as well a few days ago. It helps me laugh, and it makes me think lightly of sex again, which I haven't done in a long while! Drinking my water every time when I hear something funny in that podcast from now on!

the advice is really helpful, but I don't think I can depend on friends a lot, because they usually give me answers that don't help like " you shouldn't have done that" or yell at me and often make it worse. some of my friends try to rush me to complete so they can talk and it's obvious that they're not interested and it hurts, I've learnt to try not to tell people anything, because they don't help.
thanks for listening, have a good day x

i rant in my diary and that helps me because i still feel like i'm letting it out without feeling like i'm bothering my friends by being really negative and whiny -- they've told me they don't care but it's better for me to not feel like a burden.

Do you think you could make a video about therapy in general? Like, how to find the right one, what happens in the session, etc..? I would really love it. I've been looking into therapy for months now but I'm a bit afraid of what might happen, so maybe you could lay it out? xoxo

My main thing I do when I am feeling really low is that put on something that have I have seen before on the telly but not mindless (that's too depressing) and I switch off my notifications and simply use my mobile for TH-cam and music to "distract myself"

Thanks ladies! This discussion made me sit down and take a minute to think about how I'm feeling, and I realised I've been feeling sad. This went unrecognised for a fair few days. Taking your (and my own) advise and brushing my teeth, having a shower, doing some yoga then brewing myself a well deserved cup of tea. Ps, I loved the video on Rosi's channel too 😊

when i was a little girl my mum would always make me a cup of light black tea with milk and sugar when i was sad to make me feel better and then we would have a chat about it and everything seemed a bit brighter to me after that. so i can really relate to what you said about tea making you feel better. great video you two, I love your daily videos lucy, they are always amazing content!

I am really thankful that I have my sister as a roommate. She knows me and she knows how down I can get so just having her around helps a lot. But she can't be around 24/7 because she works and has college so what helps me the most on being alone and being depressed is what I like to call my safe space which is basically just this little reading nook I have in my bedroom. It's in between my bookshelf (which is one of my main sources of comfort) and the big window I have in my room which always makes the spot really warm. So I'll light candles and just read for a bit. This might sound a bit odd but another thing I find really comforting is skincare in general but mostly face masks. I'm thankful that Wal-Mart has these 1.98 face masks that I really enjoy. The last thing I'd say that helps me with self-care is movies. No matter how down I am I just can't be sad while watching Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium or Flipped or Clueless.

drinking water does actually help to "reset" when your neurological system is revved up! it's something i have my kids do often as a sensory coping strategy when they feel "out of whack" (i'm a therapist). so you're right about it mattering so much!

Something I've found helpful when low in motivation is promising myself a 5 minute break if I work for 5 minutes. The prospect of only working for 5 minutes is so much easier to handle that it's much easier to start, and then I find myself carrying on anyway. Starting is always the biggest hurdle, gets a lot easier then (I find)

Shower is the thing. Even if I haven't been sweating I've tried to get myself to shower every night. I think its important to have a soap you love the scent of, shampoo and conditioner you like, aromatherapy type stuff, body treatments. A lot of that stuff doesn't even have to cost a lot, but having it on hand and making a nightly shower a real luxury makes a difference
