One of the all time great singers of country singers. He was called THE VOICE. He was so under appreciated. He should have been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame DECADES AGO!
I'm a central Texas boy myself, my friend. Have always loved Vern's music, and this one of his best. I found myself living the story the old man told. The love of my life for 32 years was 'chiseled in stone' a few months ago. This one always got to me, and even more so now. Thanks for all your great reaction vids. 🙂
He was nicknamed "The Voice". You would like his song Set um Joe. I played in a country band about 40 years ago. We played this and some of his other tunes. Check out some Gene Watson. 14 Karat Mind is a good one that we played. Mark Collie has a song that you would like called Even the Man In the Moon is Crying. I like this type country and the older stuff. Don't care for most of the new stuff.
I've known and loved this song since it came out in 1989. I didn't get the chiseled in stone part at first, but once I did, it changed the whole song for me. Something new just hit me listening to this now - not sure if it was intended or not. He sings "so I brought these pretty flowers ...". Funny that's what both he and the old man would now do for the women they love.
San Antonio, Texas here. My Dad and my brother listened to classic Country when I was growing up. George Strait brought me over to Country. Over time I have become a hardcore classic Country fan. Waylon has become my ultimate favorite. I even had a replica of his guitar made. If you want a super tear jerker, then you need to listen to Jason Michael Carroll, " Alyssa Lies". I promise that you will not make it to the end of that song without getting misty eyed. Another is watch the video of Travis Tritt's, Trilogy videos. You won't make it through those either. He puts 3 of his songs together and made one big video from it.
Chisled in stone was the on grave marker of the wife of the old man. The dates on a grave are "chisled in stone". The old man was telling him he was lucky to have someone to go home to cause he didnt anymore. Kimber Sparks did a video here on You Tube in a cemetary where she sang duet of this song with Vern.
I think you missed the fact that the old man was warning the younger man not to take his wife for granted because his wife passed away. When you're Chiseled In Stone, he's talking about her grave markings. Great song!
Thanks for your reaction, the old man's story is the total truth. I had heard it before and is on my Spotify play list, but I had never "heard it" before. I met my Ann in high school in 1967 and we married in 1969, she went on her journey after a long fight with cancer and thirteen months and two days of hospice care, in 2023. I am living the old man's story. For me I was not prepared, it is like lousing your arm and leg and an eye in an accident. There is a wound that time can't erased. I am thankful for our long life together. Another song to follow up with, I Will Never Not Remember You by Cooper Alan. These are timeless songs!
I am so sorry for your loss, David! I feel for you. The wound of losing our loved ones doesn't heal, but with how much they loved us, they always want us to try to find the light in each day. I hope you are finding that light. One day at a time ❤️
I agree with you about country music. It's not my go to music. I like some country music but don't listen to it much because I call it cry in your beer music. Most is so sad it makes me depressed and want to cry.
Most is not so sad. Hank Williams, known for tear jerkers, wrote and recorded "Hey Good Lookin'" , check out cajun music, particularly Doug Kershaw, George Jones "White Lightnin'", Bob Wills "Stay All Night" just a few off the top of my head.
