An even more mysterious young and great drummer, listen to anything by Tyshawn Sorey with Fieldwork, with Vijay Iyer. Truly a freak of displaced grooves, slick fills, and dynamic interplay. Awesome.
No wholes left here filled up all cymbals and drums as fresh today as yesterday love this cat truly one of my favorite players today and on my all time list because he has the attitude study and personality and some to be considered yes against anyone and no ego just prayer and effort and exploration and natural guts to go out on the limb heavy or light and find a piece of fruit that's just right and live to play another day love em! Can't help to think about a friend in Vegas at that time years ago ( Prince Franklin Vanderbilt ) another bad drummer they hold there heads the same way or is it the tallnest love to do a podcast with both of them great drumming I'm out west now but a east coast man Jersey peace
It is pretty amazing to hear how he continues locked on to the rhythm through his extraordinary riffs. Very cool! I wish someone would teach how that works!
I don't think you're stupid at all, but the groove is his thing. This is like, 120% groove. He is undyingly in the pocket, and knows how to just sit on the beat in the coolest ways. I mean, I know it's in a weird time signature, so it's harder to feel, but I think he's doing a pretty amazing job for such a difficult time signature to groove with.
All people here laughing at Drumwannabe17 are lame! He didn't say Eric Harland couldn't ever groove, he only said what he heard in this video, wich is actually unquestionable. Here he isn't grooving at all, in fact the style of E.H. is very personal and organic ( which i personally find very interesting, but if i want to hear a nice solid groove i have Steve Jordan for that, or even Charly Watts!!!). I bet Eric himself would recognize that here is not groove whatsoever, because it just wasn't his intention. Groove is only one thing you can do with drums and has its place, mostly, when playing with a band. Here it wouldn't make much sense because he is the star and he is showing off what he can do. If you, as in this case, have little chunks of sticking all over the place, with silences starting and ending all over the place, with polyrhythms, changes of density of strokes and dynamics here and there, changes of time signature...i mean...you can't even tap your foot while listening to this and that sums it up really.
an egregious subterfuge against the classical regularity of standard percussionist technique. although, i must care to admit, Harlan glows with effervescence thus inducing a state of most transeunt quality (although not in the literal sense of the term, mind you)
In jazz, staying in time, in the pocket, and not being obvious about the downbeat and bar line, takes tremendous skill, thats what he usually is going for.
This might be because you aren't used to the meters and feels he is using, it also happens for me that i first recognize a groove when i become familiar with that kind of thing. Maybe give a listen or two more, and you'll find something really excellent!
This video was hard for me cause I always look for a groove when playing drums or listening to them and there was very little groove to be found in this video but I do have respect for this guy because he's clearly worked very hard on his rudiments and chops and that kind of thing.
Warning!! Take this comment down, people will spend endless energy telling you how stupid you are. Learn from my mistakes (I said this same thing and now like half the comments on the video are people telling me how stupid I am.)
Thats probably why misinformed people like you will stay "Drumwannabe's". I suggest you check out Harlands other material. You can't find groove like his very often.
I don't care if I'm a young man, I want nothing more than for Eric to father my children.
Man I'm in the same boat. Don't worry - it's very normal!
Listened to him on "I'd hit that" podcast. This guys spirit and outlook on life is amazing. His drumming is an extent of that. Just a great soul
Oh.... from the depths of his soul !!!!! That was inspirational. You can feel his vibe as he fails to miss a beat.
Seems like this guy can play
;)
An even more mysterious young and great drummer, listen to anything by Tyshawn Sorey with Fieldwork, with Vijay Iyer. Truly a freak of displaced grooves, slick fills, and dynamic interplay. Awesome.
This guy reminds me of the word, precise. Because everything he does is very, precise. One of the greatest jazz drummers of our generation.

Single purpose of trying to be the most or the best at drumming, i think you have achieved it. fantastic drumming man. beautiful once again.
Wow, this is some next level shiz! I love the sound of his snare, bass, and hat!
It is pretty amazing to hear how he continues locked on to the rhythm through his extraordinary riffs. Very cool! I wish someone would teach how that works!
a metronome is your best friend
Man, his hits are like none other. Unique sound without sacrificing the drum's musical purpose. Good stuff!
Very crisp and atmospheric. Speechless,man.
The name of this (play along) track is 'North Star'.
The most Magical Drummer I've heard lately. Harland is 24K, I'm totally mesmerized by his Music. I want his Solo CD...Now!
One of the great young drummers in the world, truly a genius.
Brilliant stuff, the cymbals sound very cool, like the idea if the efx hihat, it fizzes really nice.
still love your playing!!
My favorite part is at 4:20-26. Awesome work on the cymbal colors! Love it!
I feel so out of the loop cause I just accidentally discovered this guy. What a master drummer...

Beasty!!!! That snare sounds amazing!!!
Great performance!
Sound like Elvin, Tony Williams and Keith Moon rolled into one. But better. :)
Twotontessie Hmm that's an intriguing take on his sound. I wonder if he would agree.
Harland… to the music history books
What a great feel he has!
Eita q dinâmica de Batera pegaaaa tooop lembra-se bateras unidos jamais será vencidos.
I love it !!!
love the sound on snare
Amazing Playing!!!!
Eric is one hell of a drummer!
this is hands down the most hilarious post I have ever seen on TH-cam.
hilarious on so many levels
I wish we could hear the track a little bit more! Regardless, this is why Harland is the MAN!
very nice , love it. in jazz FILLS are a lot difficult to play.
His groove is in the kick. His hands play the melody.
OMG...1 word....AWESOME.. :-)
What a fucking monster-gorgeous artistry!
Harland is awesome, he reminds me of Jack DeJohnette or Lenny White in that he can play anywhere and still know where the time is.
9/8 - 11/8 - 3/4 - 4/4. Easy.
***** There's a transcript on drummerworld.com, same song, same time signatures. I'm a cheat. I'm ashamed of myself. I shouldn't be here.
its actually 3/4 against a 4/4 bassline
therefore a 1/4 note against triplet

***** Maybe he did wander a bit, but I prefer his phrasing on the kit to yours on TH-cam ;)
who the fuck is ringo
eu sou fã !!!!
So many tasty grooves here
Good video!!

EH is a monster drummer
Track name is called North Star
In jazz, staying in time, in the pocket, and not being obvious about the downbeat and bar line, takes tremendous skill, thats what he usually is going for.
BEST! N.1 actually!
I wish the track was a bit more discernible? Eric is one of the greatest!
-G
Jazz-Funk-Fusion master! So many rabbits out of his hat!
Proper drumming
and proper comment
Drumaier J Yes, nothing like good drumming.
yes, a good comment! haha ;)
can someone tell me what snare he is using? It sounds unreal, also the name of the hi-hat. Cheers!
I know i am 2 years late but the hi hat is a zildjian 16” k efx crash on another medium 16” crash by zildjian
This might be because you aren't used to the meters and feels he is using, it also happens for me that i first recognize a groove when i become familiar with that kind of thing. Maybe give a listen or two more, and you'll find something really excellent!
I love the licks around 1:30 - perhaps a mix of paraddiles and double paraddidles? :)
Wow
Anyone know how to get that snare sound?
What's the background music?
Baller
sick. one wonders what this guy would have become had he been born back in chester thompson's / bill bruford's day ...
AAAHHHH!!!!
good
haters will hate, don't worry
Is this in seven?
4:42 ~ Fatal Groove ~
Id say in nine, based on the keyboard at the beginning o-o-o-o--o-o-o-o--
yes and no. im just posting a comment in a style that attempts to make fun of philosophy writers
are you serious?
I find it funny how he plays as if someone is pulling his hair lol
Is he soloing, or his actually playing along to a tune? I don't hear a tune. I hear some bass in the background - a steady pulse, no rhythm
you know, that username suits you well. poor guy
Wow.. 4.40...
maybe u dont kno who eric harland is
This video was hard for me cause I always look for a groove when playing drums or listening to them and there was very little groove to be found in this video but I do have respect for this guy because he's clearly worked very hard on his rudiments and chops and that kind of thing.
English Please?
Probably using a copper snare
0:48 - 1:20????
hHAHAHAHAAHAH!
TRUE BREAST!!!
04:31
OMG...and that for a preacher? .. :-)
I don't understand why people go so crazy for Peter Erskine... Eric Harland is way better in my opinion...
lol...
It's true the groove is just not there, technically he is great otherwise I just don't feel it.
Don't be scared to voice your opinion!
skull
Not from earth
Ringo is better!
yes at being worst he is better.
Warning!! Take this comment down, people will spend endless energy telling you how stupid you are. Learn from my mistakes (I said this same thing and now like half the comments on the video are people telling me how stupid I am.)
not feeling the groove in this one at all.
not my cup of tea
Thats probably why misinformed people like you will stay "Drumwannabe's". I suggest you check out Harlands other material. You can't find groove like his very often.
Wow
