Meet the Mediterranean monk seal

Dive into the history and learn about the status, threats and protection of the Mediterranean monk seal, the most endangered mammal in the Mediterranean Sea.
The Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) is the only species of seal found in the Mediterranean Sea and the sole representative of the genus Monachus. It is characterized as the most endangered mammal in the Mediterranean Sea and among the most endangered in the world, with its total population estimated at less than 700 individuals, of which approximately 19 live in Cyprus. The species that once appeared in abundance around the Mediterranean coasts, today is threatened by tourism, coastal development, overfishing, etc. forcing it to find suitable habitat in dangerous and remote coastal caves to survive.
This short animation video was created by Enalia Physis Environmental Research Centre, in collaboration with IUCN and the Monk Seal Alliance and kindly financially supported by Exness.This video is meant for the public aiming to educate and raise awareness about the Mediterranean monk seal and highlight the threats that the species is currently facing.
