I remember being a kid playing this game and I had ZERO idea what was going on. None, none whatsoever. I would just spam GF's and hope for the best and I got ... reasonably far I guess. But it entailed a lot of angry controller throwing sessions. lol I also didn't even know to upgrade gear like I do now. I am going back to beat FF8 once and for all now.
Yes! Me too, absolutely no idea! Glad to hear you're going back to beat the game once and for all! Let this channel be the guide you never had hahaha. Thanks for checking out the video and thanks for sharing your comment!
It's nice to see FF8 getting love. Yes, the battle system can be broken. But it's really fun to think about how to junction your characters. And you gotta respect the devs for trying something completely different.
I think a mix between a materia system and a junction system would be wicked! Each has their flaws but I think they make up for what the other lacks in some way
Okay I think I got it. Switch the term “junction” to “equipments”. For each “body parts” you can equip one item. HP. Strength. Vitality. Magic. And Spirit. Ideally you want all parts equipped with something. Leave no blank slot. And you get these equipments from playing card games or steal (learn) from enemies. And for a character you cannot have all available actions. Beside attack, you customize each character with actions of your choosing. Magic. Item. Card, etc.
Oh my god I’m so happy that I was able to understand this with the way you explained it, I’ve always heard this was decisive and I was afraid of getting into it because I heard about it being too confusing but I wanted to play FF8 cuz it was the first game I ever touched, and it has such a neat and cool vibe so I’m VERY thankful I understood this❤
I'm glad it helped! Definitely play this game, one of my favourites! If you need any help along the way, feel free to join me on Twitch whenever I'm live!
That's awesome! FF8 is a game I spent months in a row playing growing up, and I picked up on a few things. Even I'm still surprised by things here and there as the years go on
I was so disappointed in this game at 13 years old. Ff7 was my favorite game and 8 looked awesome but i got so frustrated with how confusing it was i just gave up. I remember thinking why can't I just use materia? It's a shame I didn't keep trying I regret giving up.
Really enjoyed this video. When i opened the game, I got through ifrit and to the battlefield and saved immediately stopped to open TH-cam cuz I'm so incredibly confused about the system. Took me a minute to understand the attack system too, but i figured it out. I kind of like it cuz it makes me multitask between getting the extra damage and selecting the next characters attack. It is difficult though
I remember playing and beating the game, but no recollection of junction system. I don't know if it is a repressed memory or I was just more open-minded to video game mechanics as a kid, lol.
Thank you immensely for making this video. I had next to no idea what I was doing. I knew to junction but not how to do it aside from randomly. Also another huge thanks for your triple triad video, I can enjoy that game now I know what’s going on!
It’s an incredibly powerful system, but coming off of the blissfully easy FF6 and 7 systems, this just angered me. I GameSharked it the first time I played it, and years later I used the Seifer / Card strategy to beat the game at level 11. Take that, FF8! But now I kind of see what they were going for. I disagree with it, but I get it. It’s not as bad as I thought.
@@TomVsGaming Perfect? I dunno. I’m not sure you can tweak it enough to get there. But you could try simplifying the number of player stats, making the junctions themselves more icon based rather than text based, and strip back the roles of the Gf’s…that might make a difference. But at the end of the day, it would need a large overhaul to give it mass market appeal. That said, I think it’s grown on me over the the years.
Keep at it! I promise it's worth it in the end!!! There's tons of videos on the channel for anything you'll need in FF8 too! If you need any specific help feel free to come and join the live stream on Twitch, link in the description!
Currently playing this. I'm at the galbadian garden, I just got Irvine Kinneas. And I'm soo confused. So I believe I kinda have an understanding on the junction system. Thanks🙂
do we want to use these magics in battle or is it better to keep them capped to increase the stats ? i mean do we farm the magics only for the sake of increasing the stats or can we also use them ?
So that's the kicker, you CAN use them, but magic really isn't all that effective in this game outside of a very few key spells. The main use will be to increase your stats. If you junction 100 spells to strength and then go and cast 5 of those spells, you'll lose some stats, but nothing extreme. I always say, play how you want to play. Use your magic spells because it's just as easy to get them back
@@TomVsGaming found this video since I wanted to give this game another chance after many years. It is very helpful for finally helping me insurance understand it. But using your spells causing your stats to drop is where I would draw the line. That's really dumb.
When I started FF8 I used Fire as junction for Str on Squall an noticed that Str was getting higher the more Fire he had so I literally went to the open Area and drawed Fire until it was 99 at Squall so he easily had around 40 Str while everything else was around idk 10-15 Currently I just got the Ragnarok and his Ste is around 180 while all the other stats are below 80 simply because I abused Ultima Junction for Str at Squall
Every playthrough I did, I learned something different and my junctioning became almost like muscle memory. I learned what was best on each stat, I learned how to obtain the magic easily and basically learned how to destroy the whole game!
Auto works for most of the game quite well, but it tends to put spells in less than ideal junction slots. Learning to do it manually and learning what spell works best on certain stats is definitely worthwhile
WHAT WHAT WHAT this is more maths and nonsense words than i needed for my robototechnics diploma i don't understand anything and i don't even have ifrit
Probably easiest to use the "Auto" button in the Junction menu for the most of the game if you don't understand it. Takes a while to learn new systems!
@@TomVsGaming more like i donwanna it's supposed to be a game not more work after a 12 hours long shift in customer service something more relaxing like ufo silent storm or a 4x
You are a monster! Thanks for the video! But, to be honest, this junction method is absurdly complicated for a simple video-game... Its battle system should be more objective...
Thanks for the comment and sorry for the late reply! It's definitely a divisive system. Definitely a fun one once you understand it, but compared to other RPGs, it's a bit of a mess!
The only "bad" thing it would do is put something onto elemental attack or status attack. Certain enemies are resistant to elements and its possible you could heal them with each attack. But it's as easy as removing it in the junction menu. Auto junctioning gets me through majority of the game until I decide I want to min max
so I'm about 15 hours into this game. I have to say this is the worst Final Fantasy game I've ever played. no equipment, weapons, accesories. the GFs have to allll the work in battles. attacks seems useless against bosses. the drawing mechanic is wierd
I have to say, a lot of what you're complaining about isn't actually necessary. I understand the complaint about no equipment or accessories, however it's all replaced by the Junction System as a whole. Look into refining magic using learned GF abilities instead of drawing. Most players only ever draw for rare magic spells or GFs. And if you're relying on GFs in battle, you're gonna have a tough time once you reach the end of disc 3! I'd go over your junctions again, make sure you have decent magic equipped to your strength stat and make sure you've got a full stock of 100! I really hope you can learn to enjoy it, it's one of my favourites! I'm playing through the whole series again starting with FF1 and am really looking forward to another 8 playthrough! Good luck!
It's honestly easier if you just start. Take as much advice as you can and keep trying. Eventually, it will just become second nature! I always have more success by just physically doing someone. Hopefully, you can eventually learn and experience this masterpiece of a game (...almost masterpiece)

Only thing I can think of is that you don't have any magic stocked? If that's not it, I have no clue why it wouldn't show

can't believe I auto-attacked + summoned GF through this game when I was a kid lol

This needs an update, maybe where your characters are higher lvl and can explain a bit more?
Can do! I'll make a start on more mid to end game junctions and see what I can come up with!

It takes so long to draw, feels like you spend half of the game drawing magic.
After at least 40 playthroughs, I can honestly say I only draw from about 6 total enemies in the game now. Everything for me is done through refining!
