Why on God’s Green Earth this hadn’t reached 1,000,000+ hits is baffling! Your dedication to this long-gone craft is incredible, and helps give me an insight to what animating was like way back when. I also love how you implemented the makeup blush for Snow White herself-especially considering a majority of the animators for Walt Disney were female, snd improvised!

Ever since I was little, I was always amazed at how hand-drawn traditional animation could bring simple drawings to life like magic. For a time when I started high school, I seriously considered a career in animation and dreamed of reviving traditional techniques: hand-inked and hand-painted cels, multiplane cameras, successive exposure, the whole nine yards. I ultimately decided against that, and it pains me to say I don't regret that decision. Most major film studios (at least in North America) don't want that kind of animation anymore. All they care about is making a quick buck, even if it means shoddy art. And I would've ended up living the "starving artist" stereotype as a result. If you're planning on a career in animation, maybe you can fulfill my old dream for me. I would pay to watch it, even if it was lousy, because we so desperately need for these kinds of cartoons to come back.
It's especially interesting that you did one for the Genie, since Aladdin wasn't made with cels but was digitally inked and painted. Also, why does the water turn red at moments?

      HotWax93 welp, there's still anime.
Some traditions are not completely lost.

HotWax93 It really breaks my heart hearing your story and how you gave up on it. Well, maybe you should keep an eye on me. Hopefully, one day I might just fullfil that old beautiful dream, I'm willing to dedicate my time and money. I'm actually not looking to revive cameras, cels, or even paper animation (at least not fully). What I'm really after is bringing back the old principles, the expressiveness, the imagination and the magic of old cartoons. Like you said, these days studios want quick money and no effort, and it's sad to see that. BUT, I can see some aspects that give hope I can butt myself in the industry and slowly promote my vision.
I'm just finishing high school, I already made one full cartoon which received pretty good feedback at festivals so far (though it is primitive and kind of limited, you can watch it on my channel) and I'm about to release another which will be about 200% better. After college, all I need will be a team of artists who can see my vision and are willing to go through it with me, and the fight will already be 50% easier. It will be challenging, true, but I'll go through it all if eventually it's going to be all worth it.

+AD RC That's why I said traditional animation is dead in North America. I never said it was dead altogether.

Excellent work! I love cels, both for animation and as a standalone art medium.
For anyone interested in cel painting, here are the materials I use:
For plastic, .005" Grafix Dura-lar is my favorite. You can also get blank cels with alignment holes pre-punched from some places like cartoonsupplies.com. The cheapest option is printer transparency film from office stores.
For inking, it's taken me years to find the perfect setup, but here it is: Nikko G-pen nib, cheap Speedball nib holder (I prefer the oblique one for cels and straight one for drawing on paper), and a mix of Daler-Rowney Pro and Dr. Ph. Martin Black Star Hicarb ink (order them from Blick, eveywhere else is overpriced).
The Daler-Rowney is super thick, and Ph. Martin is too thin and beads up on plastic. But both are fully opaque in a single pass, and adhere to plastic as well as acrylic paint does, and won't fade over time like ink from marker pens. So by mixing them together, you can adjust the viscosity to be just right.
Fade-resistant colored outlines can be done using watered down acrylic paint on the dip pen, but it takes a few passes to get it reasonably opaque.
For paint, I don't have an exact recommendation at the moment, but do get something matte rather than gloss. Gloss tends to get stuck to whatever is underneath the cel unless you peel it apart every year or two. I used to use cheap Apple Barrel paints from craft stores, but they've changed their formula to be thicker and less opaque, and I haven't found an ideal replacement yet.

I... I don't know how to start...I loved and appreciated your work and at the same time I couldn't stop thinking about the virtuosity of the people who painted those perfect lines on the cells so the animation could be that smooth and almost perfect. This forgetable scene for most of the human beings represents the incredible complexity of this art. Thank you so much for doing this beautiful revival.

The work required for a few seconds of animation is mind blowing. Additionally they had to sketch it all out and figure out what layer each element will go on depending on if it's 1s or 2s or whatever else... Granted though, it was teams of people who would do this, and each person would do a different part.

This is an awesome video, man! Please make more! If you did a whole series about you replicating classic cel scenes like you did here (or even showcasing some of your own work as well) and had a slight upgrade with your production value to a little bit of a higher level (not trying to say your production here is that bad, just that you could gain a whole lot more viewers if you just had a little higher camera and audio quality to compete with the bigger youtube channels' production value), you could get a massive following on here.
Cel animation is an artform that is quickly dying in the modern era, and I'm sure that once a younger guy like me (I'm 23) actually sees this process and how cool it is, a whole new generation could embrace classic cel animation and keep it alive. Plus, I am fascinated by the cel process, but there are not very many vids on YT that cover the process at all. Like, I have scoured this website and I have only found like five or six of them total on this site, so any and all cel animation-based content would be awesome! And as I said earlier, if you upgraded your production to a higher level (the ultimate goal of this would be like Jazza Art has in his vids, but any upgrade in gear is going to have more attention) you would draw a lot more people in. Just some of my thoughts lol
Keep doing what you're doing, man. You're on the verge of getting big.

I've tried my hand at trying to replicate hand drawn animation using Photoshop. Sampling colors and trying to draw them on a digital tablet, etc.. I was going for early, early Looney Toons style animation. Biggest problem is the cheap tablet I'm using. I think I could do a convincing enough job if I had a really nice tablet to draw on.
But even doing it all digital is a monumental task for one person. I started a project and only got about 30 seconds in, in like a couple months working several hours a day. I eventually gave up, at least until I can afford a decent tablet.
I can only imagine how much time and effort it would take for one person to do it all by hand.

Holy shit, it looks as good if not better than the original sequence. Good job man. It sucks no one will do traditional anymore like this. But as you indicate and show in your video, it's a lot of work for something people just won't really care for or notice except animation nerds. It's just really expensive, which is a shame really. I considered doing animation but I think I'll go into storyboarding/animation writing instead as I'm simply not patient enough to do the actual ink and paint. Good to see someone so dedicated keeping the art form alive in some way.

Unfortunately, I doubt there are many companies like that.

So did Disney ever face an issue of loss of quality because of using many cells together in the same frame? Seems to me that stacking that many clear cels on top of each other would blur the background somewhat, even though the cels are clear. Doesn't the stacking of a lot of clear cels sort of distort the background just a little bit because of the compounding of that many clear pieces on top of each other? What was the limit of number of cels used in a single frame before loss of quality became an issue?

@Lamich Thanks for the reply and videos. I have watched all of the videos I can find on cel animation, but I haven't seen the ones you just sent so I will definitely check them out. I find old school animation so interesting and have gone down the rabbit hole learning about the process, so thanks for the info.
