This beautiful song evokes happy childhood memories. Anna's magnificent voice really does it complete justice. Well done Anna on a brilliant performance!!
This lovely old Irish song - from my childhood, Anna has a beautiful voice that does this song justice, 'tis sure to warm the heart of any Irishman or woman who hears it, movingly beautiful - from all the Irish in NZ thanks Anna.
Lyrics 🍀 Mellow the moonlight to shine is beginning Close by the window young Eileen is spinning Bent o'er the fire her blind grandmother sitting Is crooning and moaning and drowsily knitting. Merrily, cheerily, noiselessly whirring Swings the wheel, spins the wheel while the foot's stirring Spritely and lightly and merrily ringing Sounds the sweet voice of the young maiden singing. "Eileen, a chara, I hear someone tapping" "'Tis the ivy dear mother against the glass flapping" "Eily, I surely hear somebody sighing" "'Tis the sound mother dear of the autumn winds crying Merrily, cheerily, noiselessly whirring Swings the wheel, spins the wheel while the foot's stirring Spritely and lightly and merrily ringing Sounds the sweet voice of a young maiden singing. There's a form at the casement, the form of her true love And he whispers with face bent, "I'm waiting for you, love" Get up on the stool, through the lattice step lightly And we'll rove in the grove while the moon's shining brightly." Slower and slower and slower the wheel rings Lower and lower and lower the rear rings E're the wheel and the rear stopped their spinning and moving Through the grove the young lovers by moonlight are roving
Wonderful Song ! Love it ! It's an old favourite of mine, and Anna sings it beautifully ! Marvellous Video ! It is very well made, with some very nice images ! Thank you so much Bob for sharing this fantastic upload ! 5*+
Anna has a beautiful voice, but no one could sing The Spinning Wheel like Delia Murphy. You can almost hear the wheel go round and the tap on the window .
It's a good version ,but the girl on it does not look irish ,pale skin blue eyes and dark hair and the man looking through the window looks like Norman bates AND THE NEARLY NAKED COUPLE ARE AN INSULT TO THIS LOVELY OLD IRISH SONG
+michelle staunton Do you have to be or look Irish to sing this song? Many's a rove in the grove I've had during the hours of darkness and it often ended up with clothes being cast off, especially during our two days of summer, and I doubt people alive during the time the song was written were much different.
You are an old-fashioned bigot from the hypocritical 18th century. You see obscenity when there is simply love. Remember you were born nude. Remember your own parents were nude when they conceived you. If you are scared by nudity I suggest you see a psychiatrist. You can go to beaches in Germany or France or Spain and see bare-breasted ladies who do not offend anybody.
Michelle, you really need to save your ire for some of the truly dreadful events happening in the world. This is a beautiful rendition of a beautiful song. The pictures were pretty inoffensive.
petitonton - your response shows you to be a far more intolerant person than michelle. This is an old-fashioned song, and the people who love it may also be old-fashioned, and have less "enlightened" views than you, but in my experience, it is very often the people who most loudly preach tolerance who are readiest to attack anyone whose opinion is different from their own.
What a lovely song.😊
My mother’s favourite song. ...I’d give anything to hear her sing it one more time 😢
Mine too. She passed away on Saturday. Her twin sister was called Eileen. 😢

Lyrics 🍀
Mellow the moonlight to shine is beginning
Close by the window young Eileen is spinning
Bent o'er the fire her blind grandmother sitting
Is crooning and moaning and drowsily knitting.
Merrily, cheerily, noiselessly whirring
Swings the wheel, spins the wheel while the foot's stirring
Spritely and lightly and merrily ringing
Sounds the sweet voice of the young maiden singing.
"Eileen, a chara, I hear someone tapping"
"'Tis the ivy dear mother against the glass flapping"
"Eily, I surely hear somebody sighing"
"'Tis the sound mother dear of the autumn winds crying
Merrily, cheerily, noiselessly whirring
Swings the wheel, spins the wheel while the foot's stirring
Spritely and lightly and merrily ringing
Sounds the sweet voice of a young maiden singing.
There's a form at the casement, the form of her true love
And he whispers with face bent, "I'm waiting for you, love"
Get up on the stool, through the lattice step lightly
And we'll rove in the grove while the moon's shining brightly."
Slower and slower and slower the wheel rings
Lower and lower and lower the rear rings
E're the wheel and the rear stopped their spinning and moving
Through the grove the young lovers by moonlight are roving
Fair play

For the definitive version listen to Delia Murphy. OK,it's an old recording, but the words and intonation is spot on

But more feeling in this one,
For feeling, try to listen to Delia Murphy.
I would love to know if anybody has Anna singing "Its my Mother's birthday today"???
She sounds a lot like Catherine Mackinnon.
lol sames as the fellow below...from my child hood
I am IRISH!
I am not Irish but have loved this song from childhood!
I made a comment here a few days ago, about my Mom owning a spinning wheel and it was deleted why?
I don't know why, I never read the comment. Can you not write it again, we'd all love to hear it

Can I just say the classic Irish girl from the west of Ireland has pale skin dark hair and blue eyes

I think that when a song is sung too slowly like this is, it sounds dreary and disappointing,
Beautiful voice.
