    As a new wood turner I appreciate Brian's instructional style and his comprehensive collection of videos on turning chisels I'm saddened to learn in the comments that there will be no new videos
    Thank you for keeping these videos up

    I know this was done 8 years ago but what fantastic information presented clearly and succinctly! Love it. I’m going out to make a small round skew right now!! Just the term fulcrum cemented the concept of the susceptibility a tool has for catching for me. It’s like a teeter totter, too much weight to the wrong side of the fulcrum, boom, catch! I’m teaching wood turning in Durango Colorado very soon and this concept of fulcrums will make it easier for people to grasp vs my description, which was saying the same thing but this just nails the concept more effectively! Love it!

    I learned more about using the skew after you thoroughly described fulcrum. Thanks.

    Eye opening! This certainly helps demystify some catch scenarios.

    Brian, thank you for this information I have been following your series of Videos for some time, I am a relatively new turner when it comes to using a skew and you have demystified the differences. Like a lot of new turners I hated my skew because I was not sure how to present it, after watching your tutorials I am now much more comfortable with it.
    Keep them coming.

    Hi Brian! Thank you for a very instructional video. One thing that you could also mention when comparing rectangular, oval and round skews is how easy or difficult may be to sharpen them. It seems to me that sharpening a rectangular one is a breeze, while sharpening the oval and round ones could be troublesome because of the point of contact on the platform for sharpening. Just a thought! Cheers! Daniel

    Many thanks, I'm very glad that I got to your channel. The detail with which you all comment, helps me to master the turning of the tree. Good luck, to you, and success. I subscribed to the channel and I hope that these lessons will help me to master a good turning technique.

    Just getting going with woodturning and want a quality set of tools! Thx for the tip on avoiding the profit-making "set". Thinking Robert Sorby but open to ideas. What's your preference, you seem like a no-nonsense guy? Thank you

  • @Cancun771

    Isn't more tool mass a good thing? You don't need to carry them very far and most of the weight will always be on the toolrest, but all of the mass will help minimize chatter.

    Thanks for making this video, it was really helpful. For my first skew I either want a round or flat one, but what width would be best for my first one? 3/4", 1", or 1 1/4"? Thanks!

    Great video. I am looking at skews also and for a beginner, is the rectangular skew better do you think? Thx

  • @woodywood1951
    @woodywood1951 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    A skew chisel is a skew chisel, whatever is round or not.
    Maybe a round skew is easier to use, at least when one starts using a skew.

  • @MakeCrazydays
    @MakeCrazydays 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    It appears that your oval skew does not have a rounded tip like the rectangular one. What would be the reason to keep that edge straight? Or was it more subtle than the rectangular one? I ask since in one of your earlier videos you seemed to prefer the rounded skew edge.

    • @BHavensWoodworker
      @BHavensWoodworker  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is a slight curve on the oval skew. I find that the radius helps with peeling cuts so that I do not engage the whole cutting edge at once. It also lets you engage a small part of the cutting edge to do light peeling cuts. For cutting beads, coves, and point cuts (V-grooves), I find the radius does not have any advantage; and the straight edge makes for a pointer long point, which is a little better for making point cuts.
      Since I would tend to use (3/4" or larger) rectangular skews for peeling cuts, I like to have a good amount of radius, (and the larger the skew the more radius I like). For doing more profiled work with little or no peeling cuts, I would tend to use a small (1/2") rectangular skew or an oval skew either with little or no radius.

    Thanks Brian! I left a question about the oval SKU on one of your other SKU angle videos and I just found the answer right here. So no need to answer me unless you want to explain why I haven’t seen any new videos from you in the past year? If you’re wondering why the word SKU is spelled like it is, it is because IM dictating this to the iPad and it automatically spells it that way and I’m sick of editing it!LOL
