  • Camels plodding across the desert, and a sense of timelessness evoked by Kitaro's theme music... NHK devoted 17 years to the planning, shooting and production of The Silk Road, which unearthed trade routes linking long-lost civilizations of East and West. A landmark in broadcasting history, this series told the story of the rise and fall of ancient civilizations.
The NHK Tokushu and China's CCTV documentary series The Silk Road began on April 7, 1980. The program started with the memorable scene of a camel caravan crossing the desert against the setting sun, with Kitaro's music and a sense of timelessness. It was the start of an epic televisual poem.
The first journey described in the series began in Chang'an (now Xi'an), at the eastern end of the ancient route. On 450,000 feet of film, the NHK crew recorded the path westward to the Pamir Heights at the Pakistan border and this material was edited to make 12 monthly broadcasts. In response to viewers' requests that the series be extended to cover the Silk Road all the way to Rome, sequels were made over the next 10 years. Seventeen years after the program was conceived, the project was completed.
    4) The Dark Castle
Tour to the Khara-khoto city located in the middle of the Gobi desert, the northern outpost of the Han period that was destroyed by Genghis Khan.

Greatest documentary ever made. Brings back all the good memories of childhood when it was broadcasted in Nepal Television. Thanks to the combine team of NHK & CCTV. And what a great background music by legendary Kitaro.

The painting at 9:00 minutes represents Hindu goddess "Kali" and also other female with extra arms. A beautiful example of connection with Hindu God, Godesses.

MANINDER Singh yah you are right, but I don't understand why maker of thi doc is not acknowledging the Indian influence. May be under the influence of Chinese govt. But if they can work with their biggest enemy, the Japanese then it should not be hard to acknowledge the Indian part of it.

I watch this series very year and find new things I hadn't noticed before. I also watch series 2, which has 18 episodes, and is the same Japanese NHK crew, who drive all the way to Syria, then onto Rome. Their lack of accuracy regarding certain historical data is irrelevant - it's the journey that counts.

Great adventure documentary. Unfortunately, the history narrated is a bit off. Khara Khoto thrived under the Mongols and was eventually decimated by armies of China's Ming dynasty with the described river diversion. The Black Hero was a Mongol army general.

This is a great documentary, but unfortunately the places names often mistakenly pronounced. It's pretty hard to explore more because of it.

Khara-Khoto is known by many names, including Chinese: 黑城 Hēichéng "black city", Eji Nai City (Tangut language, transcribed into Chinese as 亦集乃 Yijinai), Modern Mongolian Khar khot (Middle Mongol language:ᠬᠠᠷᠠ ᠬᠣᠲᠠ Khara Khoto, "black city") and to Chinese as Heishui City (Chinese: 黑水城 Hēishuǐchéng, "black water city").
