BOARDED UP BRITAIN! “Not on my high street!”

  • In the concluding segment of our 'Boarded Up Britain' series, we venture into Northallerton, the hometown of Rishi Sunak, to delve into the concerning state of our high streets. Northallerton is an affluent middle class market town and as such is immune to the challenges plaguing many working-class communities across the country. We scrutinize why the Prime Minister's response to this crisis may be falling short and whether the stark differences in economic resilience between Northallerton and other struggling areas shed light on the effectiveness of funding allocation, raising questions about priorities in comparison to Foreign Aid.

    Nick and Jill, you guys do a great job of highlighting the stark contrasts between affluent areas and working-class towns like Grimsby. The gap in investment, infrastructure, and community support are obvious but too many people just believe that's the way it's supposed to be. It's sad it's like this, and even sadder it's the same story all over the world. You're raising awareness and encouraging people to look at their own towns and cities and hopefully realise they can do something. Participate in local elections and advocate for meaningful change. Great series, great job documenting these issues and fostering discussion. We look forward to seeing the next series of "Bordered Up Britain". Rest well friends!

      Thankyou Gina and Rob, your comment pinpoints the hope I had for this series. before I started it I was able to walk around with rose coloured glasses on and not see the decline of my very own high street. I had that snobbish opinion that it wasn’t happening in my town. Sadly it really was and investigating my own high street losses spurred me on to see what was happening elsewhere. if others do the same, the faster this topic will be spoken about and eventually it will get onto Parliament agenda with the level of seriousness we deserve.

      @@allykhan8594 councils should encourage locals to purchase the shops in town in full (not on mortages) , rather than just letting National tycoons buy them , if a local owns the shop building outright and look after it , the Rents will be low. compared to a tycoon who only uses shop retail property to make massive profits off the back of locals.
      thriving town centers are reliant on low Rents , to allow businesses to thrive and most of the Councils in Deprived areas continued to get their funds via appeasing big Tycoons , big business.
      just by seeing sunaks highstreet , it is clear all those properties are fully owned by locals , one example is the Old building the argos is in , that is clearly locally owned and well looked after because no tycoon is going to buy that place if it needs consistent regular maintance.

      The elites have decided we will run our economy on windmills and imported gas and electricity. They've closed down the factories.. I believe the goal is to now close down actual physical shops in town centres and high streets so the only shops that will remain are supermarkets and other select out of town type stores.
      It can cost £1000-2000 or more per week to rent a small shop in town. Imagine the profit you need to make in order to pay bills and wages to make that work. So shops stay empty and/or shops come and go. It can cost some £600 or more per week to have a little car trailer/caravan stall in town selling food or such.
      Everywhere is in decline. Just not the likes of Pangbourne yet...

Never been to Bridlington and watching this I will not be visiting any time soon. thank you so much Alan 🙏 we have had to put up with these empty units for years now. some of the shops in York have been closed since 2018 so there is no blaming the pandemic for those. its the greedy landlords not budging on rent and being able to afford to keep those buildings vacant until they get the inflated value they want to sell them. we need a party in power that consists of MPs that don’t all have a property portfolio of their own. Sadly as many as 3/4s of MPs have property portfolios that they manage so they won’t be passing any bills to weaken landlords powers anytime soon.

    my nearest high street is Blyth in Northumberland, Oxfam, Sue Ryder, St Oswalds, Iceland, animal rescue, Britsh Red Cross, Poundland, Cash generators, Vapeland, a collection of takeaways and betting shops banks & building societies but the best-looking shops are empty and have artists' impressions on the windows of what they "could look like" to say the area is rundown isn't doing it justice, the council is revamping the market square yet again, every 3-5 years they tear it up and rearrange everything saying that will attract inward investment into the town, you know the old saying "doing the same thing every day expecting a different result is a sign of insanity" Blyth Council has taken that to heights no other council has ever dared to tread, the waste of money is on a level never seen anywhere else in the UK, it is one of the most rundown violent towns in the UK and the people voted in a Tory MP and Northumberland County Council has a Tory majority,
    you can't make this s**t up, Take a look at Blyth you will not be disappointed, in the 1960s it was the busiest port in the UK with 12 coalmines feeding 6 million tonnes of coal into ships taking it all over the world, today the port is silent in comparison and so is the high street,

      It’s a really crazy situation isnt it? that the port that had its very industry ripped away from them by the Tories found themselves voting for them again in 2019 on the back of poor promises for change. Well, we all did the same sadly and without exception we are all worse off. The artists impressions on windows, im actually grateful to see those as most stand boarded up or empty with a ridiculous “to let” sign up. nobody is ever letting them, these greedy landlords that won’t negotiate reasonable rents surely don’t think that there is a queue of independents wanting to move into their long standing empty shells whilst paying full whack? all they are doing is maintaining a property portfolio that they probably inherited until a Council bankrupts itself trying to buy out the buildings at market value to repurpose them. thank you for bringing Blyth to my attention, it’s gone on the list and I’d love to get your local opinion when I visit later in the year. Barrow in Cumbria is probably the closest place that is really suffering with their representative hailing from the market town down the road. Well first things first, I’ve just finished a new Saturday night filming/schedule/programme (don’t get excited it’s total crap!). However, I found it very stressful editing my pathetic film that my blood pressure rose to dangerous levels (in fact I’m probably in A&E right now). All I had left of my miserable night to look forward to was GENeration Xplorers Friday evenings film. However, after watching it my blood pressure is now in the stratosphere ❤️ My MP is Vicky Ford (Con), or as we like to call her Vicky Fraud. In my city centre it’s very noticeable how affluent most people are plus very few boarded up shops (there are of course a few). To be fair though I’ve never seen anybody with a 22 carat gold shopping bag. Your film Nick has just reminded me to apply to my local Communist Party for membership. We shall overcome some day! BRILLIANT TEN STAR FILM ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ THE FIRST EVER GIVEN!

      now that is the best news ive heard all week, we need Mike back on the telly! Yours and mine both Mike (re. blood pressure), think ive aged 10 years filming these last few back to back segments, when this nonsense does return it will come back as a once a month segment for the well-being of me and the viewers! Vicky Fraud I like that, interestingly an Irish MP that also has a substantial property portfolio. how we can ever make life hard for the landlords of these empty spaces when the MPs that represent them are also landlords is beyond me. Loved that gold shopping bag, I had to chase her down as an afterthought but im glad I did, heaven forbid anyone ever takes me too seriously! the Commies would create an even bigger divide than the Tories but im guessing the have nots would all be better off (or at least think they were). 10 stars is high praise indeed. excited to see yours later. Spoiler alert im out trying to film the typical British Drunk Antics that happen over a Bank Holiday Weekend, when im not filming I see so much so armed with a camera I went out to film all the most deprived places yesterday. 4 hours later and I only have about 30 seconds of worthy footage. hopefully there will be more nutcases out today!

He failed on both. Revisiting that deal under a new leadership is the only hope.

It's very posh and thriving along the North Norfolk coast where all the rich London folks have a second home. So much so that a lot of the locals cannot afford to live there anymore. Interesting video, many good points. However, there have indeed been changes in this town in very recent years. Subtle changes to the outside eye, but telling if you've lived here a while. For instance, the 'we buy gold'/pawn shop place (think it's called Ramsden's), that would have been unthinkable here just a few years ago. In the last year, I think 3 or 4 mini mart type shops have opened on the high street. There are now 3 bookmakers and independent phone repair/case shop. The photography shop has been taken over by a vape shop and - to my own great shock - permission was given for a McDonald's (albeit outside of town centre), which opened late last year. I've been living in this town with my children for 11 years now and we've always been mildly amused by the lack of fast food chains and other kinds of shops you see lining high streets all over this country. But they're starting to creep in now. Granted, our high street is certainly much better off than most towns and empty units haven't been empty for long (apart from the old Goodwins and Mountain Warehouse shops). Pubs, cafes and takeaways are keeping many a town afloat and our local economy is swamped with places to eat/drink. Northallerton is doing okay but you can see new elements that Sunak and his rich chums would consider declasse. It is being forced to make concessions. It's still thoroughly beige and Tory though 😄 And boring. Chronically boring 😆
    ***Edit There are at least 3 Eastern European convenience shops, opened this past year. There is a food bank in the Zion Church, just behind the high street.

    • @GENerationXplorers
      @GENerationXplorers  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thats really interesting and a great local perspective. I guess towns like Northallerton fight back for longer but the tides of change are coming. As soon as the infection of bookies, pawn shops (like you say) and heaven forbid EU shops appear on the high street, the affluent footfall will vanish overnight, it will be too scary and alien a place to keep visiting and at that point the independent traders will be forced to retreat.
      I did read about that food bank after my visit and tbh im glad I didn’t know about it when I was there. a food bank in a place like Northallerton makes my blood boil. I guess all the rich constituents that are living above their means need a hand out too? Absolutely unforgivable. After visiting Grimsby the week prior which is honestly wall to wall homeless and destitution the thought of a food bank to help people that can’t adequately manage their finances in this day and age is about as bad as it gets..
      great comment though and really is making me start to realise that the decline will eventually wash over even the most affluent towns unless there is real change. I noticed in last weeks poll that Rishi is likely to lose his Northallerton seat, things might start to get very interesting in May..

    • @YorkshireTeaNiceNStrong
      @YorkshireTeaNiceNStrong 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GENerationXplorers I honestly don't think this town will ever vote the Tories out. I think it's safe to say that it's fared better than most, thanks to being a long-held Tory town. Sunak never appears here, unless there's a photo op, after which he's gone.

    Excellent series, and a great contrast I not heard of Northallerton before and it does look like a really lovely town in Yorkshire. It's an interesting contrast to the other towns you featured, it does leave me with some questions though. The high street is thriving, does the town have a large retail park outside the town centre? There's obviously money in the town as there's a Balfours and a Tommy Hilfiger store in your footage, so what jobs do people have there? Compared to the other towns where most of their jobs dried up, also the demographics, is the population younger? Do younger people stay in the area and have good jobs? That all makes a difference to a town's economy. Retailers won't open businesses in towns where money is tight.

    no surprise the area with no closed shops is where the politicians live. spot on with that commentary! and the side by side visual comparisons really make that point! super powerful. great end to the series. good luck to those cities getting money. there are a lot of discrepancies between the neighborhood communities here in chicago. it's hard to see. the no cats sign on the pub made me laugh. tell the truth, how many pints did you grab checking on them, nick? 🤭

    I live in North wales my AM as they are called here lives on the coast, there are nice homes but i wouldnt call it a Middle class area as there is also unemployment and social housing. I understand that most Politicians dont have a clue what class of people live in the poorer areas. We are not all Yobs and we dont all skive on benefits. The point im making is the funding should be the same for everywhere, and the councils have an obligation to take care of social housing and funding for services, but most have squandered it on stupid ideas and havent listened to what most people need or want.

    • @GENerationXplorers
      @GENerationXplorers  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I bet when your AM chose that area it was the best in the vicinity. they don’t seem to have a reasonable insight into what life is like in the more challenged areas. we have about half a dozen seats going forward on a May the 2nd for the local elections and not one of them, even the one I want to like, is facing the same issues we face day in day out. they are just not seeing first hand the damage that is happening to our towns and cities.

    It's no surprise that the Tories are detached from reality, I can understand the wealthy ones looking after themselves, living in cosy places like Northallerton. Working class Tories need to give their heads a shake though, people like former Tory '30p Lee' Anderson for example, talk about forgetting where you are from.
    Let's hope the next government can get a grip on this country, though who would want the challenge - it is a poisoned chalice.
    The foreign aid budget is something that I believe should stay - how it is administered and which countries we give it to needs to be looked at - why are we sending aid to India when they have a space programme. The aid money is clearly not being spent on the right projects and the right people.
    Large scale corporate tax evasion needs to be looked at but too many of these businesses have the ear of the current government.
    This has been a really interesting series Nick. There are a few towns this way who have tried to help the plight of their town centres. Sunderland does spring to mind - there has been much investment around the old Vaux brewery site which stood as wasteland for decades and the Keel Square development to turn old retail areas into leisure areas. Of course the average punter just complains about a few shops closing and why can't the council stop Wilko closing down.

    • @IamaDutch-Kiwi
      @IamaDutch-Kiwi 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Your comment about foreign aid hot home. Why indeed send rockets to the moon when people are living in deplorable circumstances. Great point made. 👌

    • @GENerationXplorers
      @GENerationXplorers  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      great comment as always Andy. lets hope more conservative MPs defect, that will really help change the narrative come the General Election later in the year. ironically the party he has defected to will almost all but certainly be sharing a coalition with the one he hates the most. but that should be enough to strike change from within.
      Your right of course about Foreign Aid, as the sixth richest country we should always set an example and give that % of GDP to help the less fortunate and India is beyond a joke with how they treat their own whilst funding a space programme.
      Amazon skirting Corporate Tax not just here but in the States too is unforgivable especially when they use that offset to fund the decimation of our high streets, poor working conditions and replacing humans with robots!
      I’ll have to come and have a look at Sunderland. Middlesbrough impressed me the most with what they are doing in Captain Cooks square and their acquisition of other big buildings like Debenhams and House of Fraser. they clearly have been thinking about change for a long time even if they couldn’t quite keep up with the pace of change.

    Interesting video and some salient points. However, I don't think it's aided by a fixation with class. Many towns affluent and not so affluent are experiencing the same deterioration and I would've thought that if any town what is deserving of the middle-class label, it would be York! There is certainly in my view a disconnect between politicians and the average citizen, but this is not a factor of class necessarily, but of the Westminster bubble IMHO

    • @GENerationXplorers
      @GENerationXplorers  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      thats very true York is quite shocking, especially seeing so many shops shut in the shambles and entire roads vacant on the main square for so long. but York has always been defiantly and proudly Labour even in 2019, the old belief that Labour is for the “working class” has helped them over the decades. it wont this year though, the “working classes” is the term both the current Labour and Conservative fear the most as neither party is appealing to them. With each time that term is bandied it strikes a chord to prevent voters wasting one more vote on Lab/Con.

We have many of our (generations in now so it’s really instilled) refusing to work because they would be worse off. On top of that unless you are born into money in this Country the standard of living, NHS care, social care and even transport is not fit for purpose. Sadly the UK has got so bad over the last few years that if I was young enough I’d leave and then we act shocked when we can’t retain new generations that have something to offer to stay in the UK.

      I’m not even sure who runs our Council anymore, we have been swallowed up by North Yorkshire County Council and despite eyeing their meetings with interest all they ever seem to be concerned with is what happens in Harrogate. what happens here seems to be down to the same mismatch of representatives from every party that only ever seem to be interested in making the sea front look shiny to please visitors whilst the rest of the town looks like a scene from a third world country. I think we have to acknowledge that high street retail is well and truly dead and the sooner we think about repurposing those areas for other uses the better. hope your having a great Easter weekend Garry.
