"Feed the soil, not the plants". Love it. That's been my mantra all this season for my brand-new veggie patch built on what was a horrible old bit of raggedy lawn over compacted clay with elm suckers all through it. It's the most productive and densely-planted garden I've ever had. Now I'm inspired to start top-dressing where I've harvested and get my Summer planting happening! Thank you!
For ausfoodgarden: I was thinking in terms of getting sand and bacteria from compost under your nails. Soil has never been free of nasty bacteria and other un-hygenic germs....
What soil bacteria are you worried about that would require gloves? apart from tetanus maybe. I'd be wearing a mask though when spreading compost and dry amendments. I hardly ever wear gloves and had no issues over 40 years gardening. You are right though, always good to be safe.
Many thanks Vasili. I got some good ideas !
