  • Umaru Musa Yar'Adua was born on 16 August 1951 in Katsina, a city in the northern part of Nigeria. He hailed from an influential political family; his father, Musa Yar'Adua, was a former Minister of Lagos during the First Republic, and his elder brother, Shehu Musa Yar'Adua, served as Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters, under General Olusegun Obasanjo’s military regime.
Yar'Adua's early education began at Rafukka Primary School in Katsina, where he showed exceptional promise. He continued his studies at Dutsinma Boarding Primary School and then proceeded to Katsina Provincial Secondary School (now Government College, Katsina). He graduated in 1969 with a Higher School Certificate and subsequently gained admission to Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria. Yar'Adua earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and Chemistry in 1975 and later a Master’s degree in Analytical Chemistry in 1978.
