I could write PAGES and PAGES about this show's brilliant storytelling of these two. Just to be clear, in no way do I fully romanticize or even ship them. However, the show poses the interesting concept that the public fed into this relationship because they want the fairytale-- even over reality. It's so fascinating to see that we, the audience, play into this, too. We see their (very brief) moments of happiness and a part of us wishes-- against logic-- that the story will turn out differently this time, that they will work, that they will end up together because the reality of the true conclusion of their story is unbearable to accept. It's a credit to the writers and Josh&Emma (and their amazing chemistry) for making us want the fairytale.
I also love (storytelling-wise) that in series 3, Charles is so adamant in following in the footsteps of the previous (exiled) Prince of Wales and marrying the one woman he loves. This plan is thwarted by his family members, but in his continued pursuit thereafter of his relationship with Camila, Diana, in a way, ends up being the one exiled. It's just tragic.

unfortunately he loved someone else, Charles and Diana are the prime example of why arranging marriages are a bad idea, as is keeping people married even when they are unhappy - both of them would have had better lives with other people who suited them, not each other
