As a VFX artists for 7 years I'll point out 3 things why it looks the way it is. #1 time crunch Indian production houses would give very tight schedule dates. #2 artist aren't paid for feedback revision work. So sometimes these directors be like haa haa 19-20 chal jayega. While bigger studios like weta, ILM, dream these VFX studios have total liberty to tell ki Bhai humko ye scene karne k liye 2 month aur revision k Paisa alagse chahiye. #3 the amount of artist hired. Pakka bol sakta hu VFX and post production me 4-6 log hi honge iss movie k liye. And each one of them must be crunching 12 hours a day for 3-4 months. That's 96% the truth of most Bollywood movies.
Exactly. This is a good video for Film enthusiasts but obviously Vfx artists and Filmmakers know all these things. There are a lot of things to consider why the vfx of this movie sucks. The major reason for me is the decision to shoot the whole movie in a studio/on green screen. Rajamouli knows this the best. You can always add details in the background and match lighting easily as the audience wont pay a lot of attention there and the vfx artists can focus on the really meaty scenes. Anyway not taking anything away from this video, this was a solid video essay!
@@mukeshsharma50035 SSR sir is different bro. that man, i (touch my ear) got to shake hand with him and his hands are rough. you feel a rough skin on his palm. that's one indication that unlike other bollywood hollywood directors SSR sir will get so involved and watch over every small aspect of the scene while giving the actor total liberty to perform while getting his hand all roughed up. that man barely sits on the set when it's shooting. above all he is always happy, smiling and laughing.
Second thing is every creature in Adipurush feels weightless, like in king kong and planet of the apes, you can feel their weight as per with their movements, like king kong moves comparatively slow with respect to human movement because king kong is too huge to move too quickly, but in Adipurush each vanar(especially that jumping vanar) feels totally weightless cuz it is moving too quickly with respect to its size and it lands like a soft toy

Personal opinion: Makers of Adipurush wasted a lot of money by shooting everything indoors. Even scenes that took place in a forest or some real-looking location are made in CGI. They should have saved money there and put more focus on special scenes to make them perfect. I mean, even Marvel movies don't have CGI from the first scene to the last. They also have normal real-location scenes. I think the budget allocation was probably a mess in this project.
Bro the real problem with adipurush is not it's vfx because in india I think no one pays soo much attention on vfx the problem is the execution,dialogues, casting and the director's vision.
This is what we need. Videos like yours will help improve standards of VFX in Indian cinema. Let's just admit VFX is an advanced science in Hollywood and in Indian cinema it is amateur at best. The extents they go into replicating in the computer the exact physics, texture and mechanics is too advanced for any Indian filmmaker to attempt. Indian fimmakers just go with the 'chalte Hain attitude " it will do, because Indian audiences are not as demanding. But this is exactly why we cant compete yet on the global scale. Mindset needs to change.
And just too add the only VFX company in India that aims for a high standard is Red Chillies. DNEG has joined the Indian scene now too so quality will get tons better.
Forget about VFX just watch An American werewolf in London that movie's biggest responsibility was all on makeup department still they pulled off gracefully
Worst thing is, all characters appear one dimensional. Think of Ravan in Ramayana TV show, he had a wife, brothers, a court and his subjects, all this gave him a rounded character. Hanuman Ji for example was at times playful, emotional, kind, angry, brave, confused. Even the small role of Jambvan was interesting, shown as an old lumbering bear with a dignified headgear and wise crucial dialogues. This film seems to be a cartoonish depiction of the characters, like they are written by somebody with very superficial knowledge of the original text.

Finally someone with actual detailed criticism. The problem is most Indian maker prefer cheap copy than doing something original. Making anything original requires time and effort which we don't want to give. This issue is very deep. Look at tv serials. Naagin (colors), BaalVeer , Superhero vs Supercops and so many fantasy show, all hv poor vfx and often shamelessly plagiarizes Hollywood and others. There's an entire whole BaalVeer promo video that's direct copy of Thor Hela scene and Shang-Chi. 🙀 Naagin despite being such a popular show instead of improving it's vfx it's getting worse! I know channels hv very small budget but atleast try to put some effort in originality. Why the need to copy? This only encourage lack of vision people meanwhile talent gets lost. Adipurush felt a cheap copy of mix of Hollywood. I was excited when it was announced ,the concept art were great but lack of originality duped the project. I don't know wht Om Raut meant by "re-introducing Ramayana to Marvel/DC generation" bcs I can't see anything like that in trailer ,neither from aesthetics nor from vision. Also what's the need to copy Hollywood's aesthetic? My biggest disappointment was lack of Indian cultural aspect. The Vaanar Sena, outfit , armor , Lankapuri , Raavan everything were more western than Indian. He could hv consultanted Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the art. Even Anurag Kashayap did better job in Hanuman Returns. Ramayana and Mahabharat r great epic of India . Making them look Western is greatest disservice to them.
Mahabharat serial of Star Plus has good VFX they also tried to use VFX as minimum as possible most of the shoot were either on real location or they made set so that they can use there artist to do few but good sence in short they understand it's better to have few good VFX scene then using whole movie on VFX and making it look like cartoon only if adipurush makers atleast taken this lesson from that serial .l
I always imagine Epic like Ramayana should be in trilogy format like how Peter Jackson did with LOTR and I don't think practical effects or hair, makeup, costumes can look silly in these types of films important is you need team of that passion and those who accept the challenge of making this type of films. Om Raut definitely wanted to make a high fantasy movie but he clearly failed in execution his mistake is he go full Avatar mode completely CGI even background ? I mean James Cameron gave entire decade on that film to achieve picture quality of that level same goes with Peter Jackson. I love LOTR alot and I highly suggest to watch making and behind the scenes of it.
2:07 i think when om raut was talking about appealing to younger generation, I think he had SoBo and Delhi NRC youth in mind. I mean I'm from Bengaluru and watch Marvel DC movies but i also wanted an authentic take of Ramayana which our rich culture in a larger scale which is already there in the source material instead of a Westerized fantasy movie. Also Marvel DC are fictional and fantasy movies but even they attempt to show them as realistically as possible, here even that has not happened. PS: The visuals in songs and trailer are good but still feel sub-par . Imagine that a 500cr (700cr after improvement) movie output looks like this?? In a few months, a movie called hanu-man will come in Telugu which matches the look of this movie at est. 40-50cr.

The attention to detail in its production is praiseworthy. While the overall filmmaking is impressive, I personally find RRR to be overrated. Allow me to explain my perspective on the film's shortcomings. RRR is 7/10 for me 1)RRR, despite excelling in its grand set pieces and impressive action sequences, there are some parts that are overly exaggerated. Additionally, certain moments in the climax can be deemed ridiculous, leading to a slight disconnection for me as a viewer. While I appreciate over-the-top action sequences, I find some scenes to be particularly unconvincing. 2)I didn't find the characters of RRR very interesting, and they didn't captivate me as much. While they were not one-dimensional, They had some depth as well, but overall, I didn't find them as interesting,unique and with as much depth. They could have been written in a better and more nuanced way. and the character of bheem was sooo stereotypical It is not necessary that every character in a movie should be deep and complex for me to enjoy them. Relatability and connection also matter to me. Unfortunately, I couldn't establish a strong connection with the characters of RRR, and I couldn't connect with their friendship that much. In my opinion, their friendship lacked emotional depth and a real connection. Their "DOSTI" was portrayed through generic songs and montages,but it could have been shown in a different way to depict their bond. I appreciate well-characterized, unique, and intriguing characters in movies. However, the characters in RRR felt exaggerated and god-like, similar to what I've seen in other Indian films. It's challenging for me to connect with such demi-god-like characters. The chemistry between the two lead actors was good. They're mainly instruments exploited for eyegasmic sequences. RRR is a film where objects take center stage, driving the narrative. It leans more towards fantasy and dreams than capturing the essence of real life.However, in certain instances, their efforts to be believable came across as unconvincing and cringeworthy, such as the Ram boxing scene. Nevertheless, these elements are sufficient to evoke a sense of vitality within many people. 3) The portrayal of the villain could have been greatly improved, from his character to his dialogue delivery. Despite my anticipation, I found him to be utterly artificial. In Rrr, we encounter the same clichéd villain archetype.I couldn't help but perceive him as overly contrived and reminiscent of a cartoon. There was an absence of any genuine sense of danger emanating from him. The way he spoke his lines felt forced. A more meticulous construction of the villain's character is warranted.(btw RIP ray Stevenson🕊️) in Bahubali,bhallaldeva was strong and powerful villain character that's why the Bettle of the last one seems very equal . However, in RRR, the final battle was well choreographed but heavily one-sided. you can built villain's character in a better way like Tarantino did in inglorious bastards with Hans Landa.Another example is Leonardo DiCaprio's role in Django Unchained. Despite being cruel and over the top, DiCaprio's acting made him a genuinely menacing antagonist. He felt like a direct threat to our hero. Unfortunately, this sense of danger was missing in RRR's villain and he was very CARINGY 4)I have a personal inclination towards a different style of humor and find that the humor and jokes presented in Rrr was not good. you will get to she this in many indian films that a desi boy falls in love with a foreign girl ,but our desi boy does not know how to speak English which creates comedy, whole name pronouncing thing was so lame and such an old trick to create comedy 5)On a positive note, the song "Komuram Bheemudo" in RRR stands out, conveying the message that true freedom stems from unity among people, not just from weapons. This event also emphasizes the role of art and poetry in India's independence struggle. However, the film's conclusion felt unrealistic and comical, as only the two heroes managed to defeat all the British characters. While their union symbolizes unity, the lack of believability in the climax was a drawback. It would have been more impactful if Bheem had rallied the support of the people who caused an uproar and saved him from punishment to rescue Ram. RRR doesn't say anything new or interesting about its main themes of "friendship" and "freedom." However, a film like "Sardar Udham" (2021) does extensively explore these aspects and truly explains what freedom is and why it is so essential, despite the difficulties in attaining it. It depicts the struggles and hardships of achieving freedom without making the Britishers over-the-top cartoon characters. It reveals what it truly means to be a freedom fighter. portrays the real atrocities committed by the Britishers But i appreciate some of the intentions Rajamouli functions with in RRR. His prioritization of words over guns, revolution over violence, and friendship over rivalry While I understand that movies like RRR are meant to celebrate friendship and freedom rather than explore them, and it was enjoyable but at some points it was over-exaggerated and cringy also Rrr is not really something new; it's kind of a checklist-type movie, but it tries to present those familiar elements in the best possible way, which is why it has worked for so many people.
It feels like you wrote my feelings about the film..Agree with each and every point mentioned The Django example is perfect. A generic masala villain; but immensely menacing (& exactly what RRR needed) I kind of enjoyed the first half; but after that the film just became a compilation of cliches.. Even the climax didn't impact me as much (except the ram Charan transformation ofcourse) But even after these drawbacks I feel RRR is a much stronger masala film than the usual ones we see.. Mark my words, this movie will be criticized not mainly for VFX and effects, but for acting. Prabhas is looking expressionless (whether it is due to CGI effects on his face or his acting, that i don't know), Kriti Sanon is not emitting a single divine feeling from her dialogues and mannerisms (It's more like Rajput princess she has captured in character) and the worst of all is Hanuman Ji (my favourite god who they have turned into a joke, looks like the actor is swelling his cheeks in anger and trying to look like Hanuman ji🤦). There is not enough of Laxman yet to comment on his character

At 21:38 you are really very wrong on that point. Every model has a common pipeline which consist sculpting and then re-topology. We can't animate the sculpted model, We have to retopolize it, And as fas as low poly is concern, It can be artistic choice or to use the low CPU power. You can further research on that as well. By the way, i love ur content, Best part is it's so detailed, That it feels like Im studing it, it really cool. I appriciate the in-depth analysis. The reason this movie looks so bad is not just because CGI, its because it spent all its time in a Blue screen and wasted its opportunity of any realism. There is a Malayalam film called Minnal Murali, and its CGI was on par with Marvel. And that is because it wasnt completely CGI heavy. The whole movie was shot in real location with practical effects and CGI was used only for a 10 minute showdown.

2:07 i think when om raut was talking about appealing to younger generation, I think he had SoBo and Delhi NRC youth in mind. I mean I'm from Bengaluru and watch Marvel DC movies but i also wanted an authentic take of Ramayana which our rich culture in a larger scale which is already there in the source material instead of a Westerized fantasy movie. Also Marvel DC are fictional and fantasy movies but even they attempt to show them as realistically as possible, here even that has not happened.
PS: The visuals in songs and trailer are good but still feel sub-par . Imagine that a 500cr (700cr after improvement) movie output looks like this?? In a few months, a movie called hanu-man will come in Telugu which matches the look of this movie at est. 40-50cr.

RRR is a good film with really good artistic elements. The attention to detail in its production is praiseworthy. While the overall filmmaking is impressive, I personally find RRR to be overrated. Allow me to explain my perspective on the film's shortcomings.
RRR is 7/10 for me
1)RRR, despite excelling in its grand set pieces and impressive action sequences, there are some parts that are overly exaggerated.
Additionally, certain moments in the climax can be deemed ridiculous, leading to a slight disconnection for me as a viewer. While I appreciate over-the-top action sequences, I find some scenes to be particularly unconvincing.
2)I didn't find the characters of RRR very interesting, and they didn't captivate me as much. While they were not one-dimensional, They had some depth as well, but overall, I didn't find them as interesting,unique and with as much depth. They could have been written in a better and more nuanced way. and the character of bheem was sooo stereotypical
It is not necessary that every character in a movie should be deep and complex for me to enjoy them. Relatability and connection also matter to me. Unfortunately, I couldn't establish a strong connection with the characters of RRR, and I couldn't connect with their friendship that much. In my opinion, their friendship lacked emotional depth and a real connection. Their "DOSTI" was portrayed through generic songs and montages,but it could have been shown in a different way to depict their bond.
I appreciate well-characterized, unique, and intriguing characters in movies. However, the characters in RRR felt exaggerated and god-like, similar to what I've seen in other Indian films. It's challenging for me to connect with such demi-god-like characters.
The chemistry between the two lead actors was good. They're mainly instruments exploited for eyegasmic sequences. RRR is a film where objects take center stage, driving the narrative. It leans more towards fantasy and dreams than capturing the essence of real life.However, in certain instances, their efforts to be believable came across as unconvincing and cringeworthy, such as the Ram boxing scene. Nevertheless, these elements are sufficient to evoke a sense of vitality within many people.
3) The portrayal of the villain could have been greatly improved, from his character to his dialogue delivery. Despite my anticipation, I found him to be utterly artificial. In Rrr, we encounter the same clichéd villain archetype.I couldn't help but perceive him as overly contrived and reminiscent of a cartoon. There was an absence of any genuine sense of danger emanating from him. The way he spoke his lines felt forced.
A more meticulous construction of the villain's character is warranted.(btw RIP ray Stevenson🕊️)
in Bahubali,bhallaldeva was strong and powerful villain character that's why the Bettle of the last one seems very equal . However, in RRR, the final battle was well choreographed but heavily one-sided. you can built villain's character in a better way like Tarantino did in inglorious bastards with Hans Landa.Another example is Leonardo DiCaprio's role in Django Unchained. Despite being cruel and over the top, DiCaprio's acting made him a genuinely menacing antagonist. He felt like a direct threat to our hero. Unfortunately, this sense of danger was missing in RRR's villain and he was very CARINGY
4)I have a personal inclination towards a different style of humor and find that the humor and jokes presented in Rrr was not good. you will get to she this in many indian films that a desi boy falls in love with a foreign girl ,but our desi boy does not know how to speak English which creates comedy, whole name pronouncing thing was so lame and such an old trick to create comedy
5)On a positive note, the song "Komuram Bheemudo" in RRR stands out, conveying the message that true freedom stems from unity among people, not just from weapons. This event also emphasizes the role of art and poetry in India's independence struggle.
However, the film's conclusion felt unrealistic and comical, as only the two heroes managed to defeat all the British characters. While their union symbolizes unity, the lack of believability in the climax was a drawback. It would have been more impactful if Bheem had rallied the support of the people who caused an uproar and saved him from punishment to rescue Ram.
RRR doesn't say anything new or interesting about its main themes of "friendship" and "freedom." However, a film like "Sardar Udham" (2021) does extensively explore these aspects and truly explains what freedom is and why it is so essential, despite the difficulties in attaining it. It depicts the struggles and hardships of achieving freedom without making the Britishers over-the-top cartoon characters. It reveals what it truly means to be a freedom fighter. portrays the real atrocities committed by the Britishers
But i appreciate some of the intentions Rajamouli functions with in RRR. His prioritization of words over guns, revolution over violence, and friendship over rivalry
While I understand that movies like RRR are meant to celebrate friendship and freedom rather than explore them, and it was enjoyable but at some points it was over-exaggerated and cringy also
Rrr is not really something new; it's kind of a checklist-type movie, but it tries to present those familiar elements in the best possible way, which is why it has worked for so many people.

The Django example is perfect. A generic masala villain; but immensely menacing (& exactly what RRR needed)
I kind of enjoyed the first half; but after that the film just became a compilation of cliches..
Even the climax didn't impact me as much (except the ram Charan transformation ofcourse)
But even after these drawbacks I feel RRR is a much stronger masala film than the usual ones we see..

Mark my words, this movie will be criticized not mainly for VFX and effects, but for acting. Prabhas is looking expressionless (whether it is due to CGI effects on his face or his acting, that i don't know), Kriti Sanon is not emitting a single divine feeling from her dialogues and mannerisms (It's more like Rajput princess she has captured in character) and the worst of all is Hanuman Ji (my favourite god who they have turned into a joke, looks like the actor is swelling his cheeks in anger and trying to look like Hanuman ji🤦). There is not enough of Laxman yet to comment on his character
Kriti sanon's acting is good . My point of view. But yes I agree that prabhas's acting is not good as expected ❤

Every model has a common pipeline which consist sculpting and then re-topology.
We can't animate the sculpted model,
We have to retopolize it,
And as fas as low poly is concern,
It can be artistic choice or to use the low CPU power.

I appriciate the in-depth analysis. The reason this movie looks so bad is not just because CGI, its because it spent all its time in a Blue screen and wasted its opportunity of any realism. There is a Malayalam film called Minnal Murali, and its CGI was on par with Marvel. And that is because it wasnt completely CGI heavy. The whole movie was shot in real location with practical effects and CGI was used only for a 10 minute showdown.
