People don’t realize that your plants don’t just thrive just because you live in Australia. They thrive because you are like you stated “consistent “. Well done Jan thank you for being an inspiration 💚🌸 Hugs to Brad❤
Thanks :) it's like that with every skill ... people don't appreciate how much effort goes in until they do it themselves .... maybe I make it look to easy online :D
I love how well behaved your plants are with the "stay" commands hahaha you're too cute.
Always reminds me of Mr Bean :D
You made me giggle when you said you were flinging the knife around like a child 😂😂
The chaos that is the first 10 minutes of this video makes me feel seen and not alone in my chaotic plant care endeavors 😅
Plant care is chaotic :D editing makes it seem so much easier when you watch others do it :D haha
@@sydneyplantguy this is absolutely true and I embrace the chaos. I have to chip and extend my Glorious this weekend as well. She is 8ft tall and the growth point is pushing against the ceiling. 🙄🥹
I'm exhausted sitting on my couch watching you 🤣 well done
😂😂 cheers :)
This guy knows what he’s doing he’s only been making videos for a year and he already almost has 200k subscribers. Well done
Thanks :) but it's almost been 2 years now :) time flies !!
mannn.... that glorious is GLORIOUS
Thanks :)
2:18am in PA. US. Ugh. I must watch.
Gotta move to Sydney Austria 🤦♂️ , the day starts sooner and thus the plants get sun ☀️ 17 hours earlier ⏰ so that is why they grow so large 😱🤓
Same! It’s 2:45am in Chicago
You make me laugh every time I watch your videos! I absolutely love and also look forward to every video you post. I can’t help but giggle when I see you struggling with the plant even though I know it’s not funny, I have thoroughly enjoyed watching every single video so far. You are one of the most real, raw and entertaining person I have watched so far. Please keep being you it’s amazing!
Emily
Thanks so much for your nice comment Emily :) appreciate it !!
I admire so much your authenticity Jan. this has been so helpful, showing realistic plant care and entertaining at the same time. ❤
Thank you so much :)
I always admire your stamina to work in heat and humidity. I was glad you decided not to chop leaves off the mother plant!
I actually like the heat … just don’t wanna be a sweaty mess on camera haha
Funny how it's always someone with GIANT plants who says size doesn't matter 😂 i love you and ya stunning plants ❤
For me it’s about finding a balance … grow nice large leaves but also make it manageable :)
Absolutely loved this video. You made me gasp, hold my breath and laugh . Good job. Love from Western Australia
Thank you:)
At the beginning my heart sank I was like "NOOOO, DON'T DO IT!" but it turned out great as usual. ❤
Has to be done eventually :) i should have done it months ago!!
Thank you for always keeping it real- it’s work of love. Consistency and constant care are key. I’m just starting my journey for big leaves- but I learn so much from watching your videos- thank you!!
Thanks for your lovely comment :) appreciate it :)
So witzig wie du rückwärts wieder ins Bild kommst. Like your humor
Danke:)
Im exhausted from watching all your hard work Jan!
It's always a pleasure to see you and the love you have for plant's.
Thanks :)
I'm not sure if you meant this vlog to be a comedy but I'm 😂😂 watching and listening to you spin round n round the pole and huffing and puffing 😂😂😂😂
I agree, he's a funny guy.
It’s definitely supposed to be entertaining :) glad I achieved that!! Hehe
Absolutely agree with all the challenges you've mentioned! I feel like it's the most untameable one among others, and the next one is Splendid. Also, absolutely agree with consistency! And this applies to all aspects in life, not only the plant hobby!
So true !! I’m seeing more & more parallels between plant care & self care for example. All about consistency!!
Jan, I also had to 😂at the comment "your plants are large cus you live in Australia ",I'm glad that you address this as I'm in Adelaide and as you say, "condition "plays a big role in the success of your plants, as well as nutrients, consistent etc.I can't stand humility, so therefore my plants don't get the "optimum" condition as in summer air-conditioning is on constantly and in winter heater is not on at all 😅. So I know that plays a big role in the size of my leafs growth, but besides humility the plants are relatively happy with the constant nutrients upside down method of watering to maintain moisture in the moss pole 😉, say hi to Brad and a cuddle too 🥰
Thank you!! You’re making good points :)
Cut my huge AF monstera thai con in september and the top cutting( with no roots) rerooted in 4 weeks into its pot and the newest leaf is still bigger than the previous. Its kinda cool how the plants just keeps growing as if nothing happened.
This video made me LOL so many times. Thank you for all your wonderful plant content, I always learn a lot!!
Thanks :)
37:58 plant dad reflexes!
Your glorious is THE plant that made me think, "Okay, maybe houseplants can be interesting." Not long after, I bought my first plant. Seeing an update was fun. It's clear you put a lot of effort into giving all your green friends the good life. Happy days! 💚🧀
Haha I was surprised at my own reflexes :D thanks :) happy growing !!
OMG I jumped and tried to grab the plant when it fell over!!!!!!!!!!!! hahaha! a very authentic "chop and extend" of sorts, and much more realistic for many of us!!!!! Lovely plant, you've done an amazing job. I managed to buy my first Glorious rooted cutting last week, I'm hoping it will be as beautiful as yours in a few years.
Thank you:)
Another great video! Your plants thrive because you make them a priority and take great care of them! Well done!
I love the way you care for and arrange your plants. Thanks for showing the tall floor grow light that you use to train the plants to orient their leaves toward the light source. I am stealing your light positioning idea lol 🙂
The size of this plant is amazing!!!! Great video Jan!!!! 🙌💯💖
Thanks :)
Your rant was all “Facts” good on you! Those plants are amazing and I was influenced by you and your amazing care for them, that I ordered myself one of each. 😊 I’m going to give it a go even you know I live in cold Canada. I would die for a piece of your strappy anthurium vitt 🥰🙌🏻
Thank you :) happy growing :)
Agaaaain! Again you are great! Well done! I like it a lot! A lot of fun! ❤
Thank you :)
“Acknowledging it’s going to be an absolute mess..and we’re embracing it. 👀👀”
You’re so cute and funny at the same time, Jan 😊
Thank you :))
I agree with you, its the way you care for them. I follow a guy that lives in Canada, he has his plants in his basement, (philadendrums, monteras, full of tropical plants) and his plants are as beautiful as yours! It does not matter where you live, its how you care for them. Love your channel and how you explain everything.❤
Thank you:)
Thanks for sharing your workflow, so many good and interesting points!
Thanks :)
Reactions like a jedi 😂. Noch viel lernen wir müssen von Dir.
Haha :D
Waw ! Such a beast you got there! You did an amazing job with it, congrats ! 👏🏻👏🏻 Cant wait to see the evolution of this top cutting.
I wanted to mention that at 4:05 you talked about glorious and EFN. Actually, the sugar like liquid on the leaf is not EFN, but nectar. Sorry if this sound pedantic but I've read a lot of confusion about it. The liquid is the nectar, produced BY extrafloralfloral nectaries. EFN are secreting glands, not the liquid. Also a lot of people said that the brown spots on the leaves are normal because they are EFN, but in fact these brown spots are just burnt leave spots, caused by the nectar secreted by EFN, but no the brown spot is not EFN. 🤓
GOD'S LIKE😮
Fellow Australian plant lover here (Brisbane) - being in Australia is somewhat an advantage in terms of the warm and humid conditions BUT also creates a heap of other issues us plant parents need to manage ie you know your babies are gonna cook in one of our many heatwaves or completely dry out if you miss a watering. It’s a whole different ballgame 😂
I definitely enjoyed this video! I am not a perfect plant parent, but plant care gives me rel;ax and a lot of joy , so I also do not neglect my plants. Waiting for May when I am able to kick some of my plants out to the garden. Thanks for sharing your passion !
Thanks for watching :)
Love this kind of video, repotting and extending is so helpful.
Thanks :)
I love your films. Thanks a lot!
Thank you:)
Awesome! I loved the quick reaction playback. Nice! 👏🏼 Thank you for the vid 💚
Those reflexes are total proof I am actually Brad's dad !! :D
Tame the beast😂 Its fun watching you care for your mature plants. It gives me an idea of what to expect and start planning for. Great video. This video is my favorite.
Thank you :))
Literally this video was the push I needed to chop and extend my splendid. Thanks for the motivation
Glad it helped you find motivation :) happy growing !
OMG I'm tired just watching this! Job well done and so entertaining.
Thank you:)
Enthusiasm is contagious. 🤩
This is probably the fastest I've ever clicked on a video. I'm terrified 😅
😂😂
Love the chaotic videos. Shows the reality of mosspoles❤
Thanks :)
Great content. I live in Australia and to get the plants looking good is a LOT of work.
Thanks :)
The “ wall of velvets” is always a sight to behold! 🪴✨🪴 Loved the chop and extend realism, I make the biggest mess when repotting, etc but it’s so worth it in the end. Thanks, Jan!
Thank you :) if you didn't make a mess you didn't do it right .... :P
The way you said “disgusting” made me think of the video where the Irish mom busts in and yells at the kids for being DESGOSTANG. What a great reference lol
That was 100% my reference :D
28:58 You live in Sydney and the rain and humidity, and not having to run AC, does give you some advantage. I live in Arizona in the US. The Sonoran Desert! 🌵 My plants definitely struggle. I run a humidifier, it feels like the moisture instantly evaporates. I have to buy distilled water for the humidifier because the tap water is so full of minerals, it will leave a white dust over everything. I have an older apartment that was built to keep out all direct sunlight. I love plants and didn’t have any houseplants for years because there was not enough ambient light from the sun coming in. I knew I had to invest in grow lights if I wanted to keep any plant alive. I have to run the AC for 5-6 months of the year. Last year, every day of the month of July was over 110° F/43° C. (Don’t ask me why I live here, I don’t know.) I’ve been doing this hobby less than 1 year. It’s a struggle and I’m still figuring it out. I’ve decided I need a greenhouse cabinet is a necessity if I want these plants to thrive. This is becoming an expensive hobby. Don’t underestimate the impact of the Sydney climate on your plants!
He said climate sets the potential, care realizes it. I agree that it is easier to grow in a nice climate but I think his point was about people who assume that with a tropical climate you don`t need to work at all because the plants grow themselves and no matter what he does the plants will grow huge and healthy. I understand his frustration, for me it is the same with people who think my plants are nice because I "was born with a green thumb" and they could not possibly keep any plant alive. That just shows ignorance about the actual amount of effort that goes into growing plants I think, as if I did not research and trial and error and invest a lot of time and money into this hobby to know how to grow plants in my conditions to be huge and mature, it is not JUST the "green thumb" or good climate, it is a lot more. That honestly goes for every person that is good at something like an instrument or art, people assume it is talent and therefore easy for them without grasping the thousands of hours of practice it takes to get to a professional level.
I live in germany, it is very cold and dark for half of the year and the other half it is hot and dry, it took me a few years of experience but I am able to grow huge plants now. You have some disatvantages with your climate but you will learn to grow despite it and maybe even gain a deeper understanding about what makes your plants grow well.
Agree with the comment above … never denied that I have an advantage, just saying I still need to realise the potential. You certainly have a disadvantage naturally but can be overcome … just saying it’s certainly possible, just maybe not at the time & effort you are willing to out in and that’s something only you can decide :)
@@fluffy_mcsparkleVery well said,I get told that,I was born with a green thumb,I understand your frustration. You take what you have and make the most of it.
Good growing 💚🪴🌿
@@sydneyplantguy I don’t have a Milsbo green house (yet.) A week ago, I moved some of my plants to a greenhouse I used for starting seeds after they were planted out. In the last week, I’ve seen more growth in some plants than I’ve seen in the last six months. It’s amazing. I have *most* of the plants I want. I’m definitely making judicious decisions on my collection, on what is and isn’t worth the money, space, & effort to keep versus the joy I get from it.
Love how the bottom extension was only 6 leaves but still taller than you 😅excited to see how my cuttings will size up
The perioles are just soooo long now 🫣🫣
Winds and rains were crazy here in PA.
Stay safe :)
you are a great plant papa .I will be following you. I have 83 plants and want them to grow bigger leaves so i will follow your tutorial on moss poles.
Happy growing :)
Great video as usual, thanks Jan 💕
I've been waiting for you to mention that lovely philodendrum smell 👃😋💕
Did you seriously say "I'm lazy"? I think we will all disagree with that, you are actually a workhorse!
Fingers crossed for the top cutting🤞
My version of ‘lazy’ is probably productive for others :D
I’m in Colorado where it’s usually very sunny most of the time but I’m in a north facing apartment so I have gotten grow lights to help with my plants which were struggling especially in the winter. Australia has been on my no 1 visit list since high school. Someday soon
It’s amazing here :) definitely come visit if u can :)
40:45 I always wondered why the water was brown because when I put GT FF in, the water doesn't change color, now I know it's the root zone that you add as well.
Yes :) just 1ml per litre :)
Been watching your videos for a while now and you've inspired me soooo much. I know the fertilizer you use but can't seem to find a video where you talk about any additional things you use for them like Silica, Root Starter or transplant shock type stuff, mycorrhizal fungi, etc. Can you point me to that if there is something!? 🙏🏼💗 Thank you sooo much for all the time you spend on these videos.
I love your channel and your amazing plants. Love how you keep it real and you’re so cute! lol 🪴
Thank you so much :)
I really need to put my glorious on a pole as she’s only a wee little baby.
Also I got a El choco Red from Flora Magnifica because of one of your videos about it 😅😂. I love your videos.
Happy growing :)
Nice plant-dad reflexes at 37:59!
I really hope the gigantic unrooted top cutting makes it.
P.S. You might benefit from a roller board as a plant taxi for your bigger plants.
🤞🤞 time will tell :)
You did a great job. You plants are visibly well taking care off even the ones in the yard.
Also, I think Something is very wrong with your plant hahaha! You said “Stay, I am gonna grab the knife” and it did not run for the hills?😮😂😂😂 😂😂😂
Thanks :)
That's a HUGE glorious 😍 I would love to bottle that distinctive Philodendron fragrance ❤
We need a philodendron candle :D
@@sydneyplantguy great idea!
This is my favourite of all your videos, I was smiling all the way through and felt every struggle 😂 Particularly loved the way you said “disgUsting” , that’s how we say it in the North of England 😀 x
Thank you :) Haha this meme of this Scottish Mum telling off her kids on camera and saying 'digUsting' lives rent free in my head !! :D th-cam.com/video/nyhKZSXt2FM/w-d-xo.html
😂 Now it’ll live in mine !@@sydneyplantguy
Your a ripper 😊 so informative funny and nice guy i have learnt so much from videos thankyou so much 💓
Thanks heaps :)
I've just made up your plant mix love love loving it also looks great thankyou
Fabulous Sweety 😽
As a recovering "control freak" myself, i agree one needs a proactive mindset to stay on top of plant care and supplimental conditions. It must be unassertive personality types complaining they don't live in Australia, as if they can't do anything themselves to maintain nice "houseplants". It's frustrating when life gets in the way, but you did a glorious job taming that rogue top cut. 😻
Thanks :) ... good point ... if only people were aware of their own personality types though :D I'd never put little effort into something expecting amazing results ...
😂😂😂😂😂Those "cat like" reflexes on point! Looks awesome 👌
Brad taught me :)
Wow, that was quite job 👍😀🇨🇦
But got it done yay !! :)
Always enlightening to watch you in action. 45:06
Nice catch ✌️🩷
Thanks :)
When you put two fertilizers in one litre of water, in this case Root Zone and Foliage Focus, how much of each do you use? Do you use the regular amount of each?
Thanks for sharing your Gargantuan Glorious!
😂 oh the bane of being a plant enthousiast...
The splendid is making a lot of progress. It would be cool if you did a video special on the splendid, and it’s vigorous growth.❤ besides this plant spotlight
I have a plant spotlight on the splendid already :) it's certainly one of the fastest growers :) might make another one eventually :)
Hi Jan, do you have any ideas against the dripping of the plants on the hardwood floor?
Thank you for sharing another great video. I have this plant and now I'm beginning to wonder if I should keep it inside. Kisses to Bret. ❤
Thanks :)
Thank you for all of your awesome videos. What size pot are you using for those big boys?
Thank you :) 20cm for the top, the bottom is in 25cm
Oooih, mold and little damage. And it grew too large. If only we had these problems. Lol
Hahah definitely good problems to have :D
😮good
It’s not a rant. It’s a reasonable response. I feel the same way when people are dismissive of the effort required to grow beautiful plants indoors.
Fair point hehe :) thanks!
The patience.. dismantling the moss pole.. love it. I thought it would just fall apart. Is it easy-er to get of the sphagnum when it's humid or dry? Love the "embrassing the mess" statement, I will tell my family to do the same (hope to see you next time 🤣)
Thanks :) easiest when it's wet or moist :)
Thank you for this video. It seemed more like what happens whenever I decide to chop my larger plants. There is always a mess and choices to make that are not clear cut. Can we see updates of the top cut of your plant? It seems as if you might loss some leaves on that one due to the small root system. I would be very surprised if you don't, but would really like to see what happens. If you can make that work without leaf loss you are truly a magician.
Certainly expecting the plant to drop a couple of leaves in favour of re-establishing a new root system .... that's why I'm so annoyed for not getting on top of it earlier :) will definitely make an update video once there's news to share :)
Hey jan. Love plants and videos as always. Yiu have helped me so much with my plants. Can i ask how u mount your PS32 together. I have some and cant work it out. Thanks.
I use the screw that’s used to mount it on the disk to mount them together (yiu need to unscrew the top of the bottom light and screw it in from the inside out of that makes sense ?!) it’s not a very official way 🤭🫣
I think philodendron smell like pine almost, very close to it at least. I LOVE it too haha sometimes I just wanna chop them to smell it haha
Yes you’re right!! :)
Where’s Timmy to help with this gigantic beauty?!
I’m going to have to tame my Philo Joepii, it’s star fishing in every direction
Love your explanations so much, all sciencey, but how we can understand it. It all seems so obvious when you explain everything
The bottom half was supposed to be a surprise for him so I didn't ask him to help :) that's great to hear ... I always wonder if I overcomplicate things :D
Wow !!! Huge plant, lots of patience required, wonderful, entertaining and fun video.
I know it's only been two months but how are those two beasts going, especially the top one ?
It’s struggling a bit but getting there :) definitely planning an update video but it will take a while :)
Its the "Wheeee“ for me😂!
haha !! :D
I want to put my verucosum on a pole some day but I dont want giant leafs. I already chopped my monsteras leafs because they blocked everything. Only left one leaf. How to keep the leafs from going big without compromising the health of the plant? Should I keep it away from the window? Should I even give it a moss pole. Or maybe give it a small pole and chop it before it reaches maturity? I am not sure.
On the Grow Vertical pole, could you put two of the plastic backings zip tied together and both ends to the mesh for a deeper moss pole if you needed to? Love your videos!
Totally :) or u could cut the width of the wire which makes it deeper :)
You should be a highly paid teacher in a school for grumpy children. Super educational and fun at the same time 🤓
Sorry you lost me at grumpy children .... I'd lose my mind :D but thanks :)
I learned so much! A tour of your rearranged room please. Is your mom still in Sydney? Does she have house plants 🪴 or garden in Germany? Will your merch be available soon?
Thanks :) mum is back in Germany now. She grew cacti & bonsai when I was growing up :) and yes, working on the merch :)
Wooow so big!!! Amazing. Would you not allow to callus the top part before planting? I’m due to my chop soon😍
I gave it about an hr or so to callus over but I wanted to get this over & done with :D
"Smells so green" is legit how I would describe the smell too 😂
We need a green scented candle !!!
41:40 great tutorial on the real hard work it takes to have big beautiful plants ❤ If all of my plants grow to potential Im going to be in trouble 😅 do you actually keep track of when each plant is getting fertilized or do you fertilize with each watering? I can't keep track. I use a very diluted amount with each watering. I use all GT products but my water is barely tinted brown. Maybe I need to use more?
Thanks :) I just fertilise with every watering because it's too hard to keep track. The brown color comes from a small about of GT rootzone on top of the GT Foliage Focus :)
I have a small philodendron that reached the top of its 60cm pole last week. I’m happy to keep it relatively small as opposed to extending as I don’t have heaps of space. should I cut it right back or only a little off the top? Thanks for all your helpful vids!
The smaller the cut, the less roots & leaves, the more of a 'set-back' to the plant. If you choose to keep your pole smaller you will have to chop more frequently which means you'll induce more shock. Completely up to you, just note that you won't get the full potential out of the plant :)
Leaf rip beats snap any day xD Growing tropicals in scandinavia: at least we have air humidity going for us. Light tho? xD Sure, at least 3 months of the year xD
At least you're heading into the good season now :)
32:19 haha. What scented febreeze spray would you like? I want philodendron scent
WHERE'S BRADLEY. I love seeing him in your videos.
That was too much chaos for him :D
I'm in zone 10 (ac year round) with east facing windows and all my plants have grow lights and humidifier running. If the plants are indoors they will need extra help
agree :)
Great real info.
The more we give the more we get!
The Sydney weather is crazy ...
This plant is glorious × 2 now, great job!
💚🌵🍀🌿💚
Thanks :)
