  • On this week’s What’s New segment Scott Huntsman has a Jeep power steering troubleshooting tip that he just had to share. Scott’s good friend Brandon Scott, from Utah Jeep Crew and Diabolical Inc. has been in a power steering bind. For some reason, his power steering pump keeps failing him and unfortunately it could leave his jeep stranded in the worst possible places. Luckily, Scott has an idea up his sleeve that might just save the day for Brandon. Jeep power steering failures can be frustrating but if you’re dealing with a similar issue, stay tuned as Scott Huntsman likely has the repair you need.

I’ve been through 4 pumps. Swap them under warranty. Figured it’s bad parts as well. Then I couldn’t get the system to bleed. Took lines off the gear box. And that teflon hose was sticking out the gear box. Thought maybe something in gear box failed. Had no idea that teflon hose was in the line. Fast forward to now4 months. My gear box is leaking. Makes sense. It’s over pressurizing. I’ll be replacing everything again. And definitely do lines as well. Very informative video. Thank you! Can’t wait to feel how much better the steering is.

Hi, do you have a step-by-step bleeding procedure after replacing the entire power steering system?

We currently do not but I'll let our producers and mechanics know it's something you're interested in.

2010 jeep wrangler rubicon. Starting to feel it’s years. Since this seems to be a common problem (based on how quickly you diagnosed it), is it a recall item? I just Star having the problem today.

What year did Jeep start using the newer hose? I have a 2017 Rubicon jku that I'm trying to diagnose.

I have a 2011 Jeep Wrangler JKU. I just got back from a 1780 mile trip and noticed a few leaks as soon as I got home. I'm not loosing any power steering or loss of fluid when I check, however, I did notice around the power steering pump, it looked like fluid was escaping from the cap. I cleaned it with a paper towel and the next day, it still appears that fluid is escaping from the cap....just a little. I do have a antifreeze leak and thought that maybe that fluid was hitting the teflon liner that is in your video. Following where the liner goes to and noticed the hose to the power steering pump was glossy. I'm assuming fluid is escaping from somewhere, but not a noticeable difference (yet!) in my everyday driving. I'm going to assume that I should replace the teflon liner and the hose?

Response from Scott: "according to the video that we produced we found in some cases power steering pumps can fail because of a faulty hose due to the liner inside, since you are having a leaking problem this is something that should be inspected by somebody who can give you the proper result, fluid coming out of the cap would be most likely the system is getting too hot or has been overfilled, Tunex Automotive Centers are experts at solving power steering issues"

Is this a problem in all jks or just the earlier ones? I have a 2017 that just started acting up. It isn't leaking any fluid but I have very stiff steering and a bit of noise when I turn. I'm pretty sure I put too much force on my steering when I was winching on a fellow jeep dude. That's when It started.

This is a problem that started in roughly the 2012 model year, and went on for about 4 years before the problem was addressed, can't promise that the 2017 model may not have the Teflon lined hose, but most should be replaced with an updated design by about then

Having same issue with 2017 JK, 147k miles. Really stiff / locking steering... maybe time to trade it in if I can get it going smooth again. You solve yours?

HI, quick question. I'm going to attack this problem this week and I was wondering if the pulley on the PS pump should have any play. Mine has about 1/8in play and I think it may be causing a little engine tremor. What do you think? 2010 JK unlimited 141k miles

Why do the electric power steering pumps go out on the gladiator?
