    Hi Colin. I'm thinking that the title of the book "The Other Clay" is a reference to Col. Glover Johns' book "The Clay Pigeons of St. Lo". Johns was the CO of the 1st Bn, 115th Infantry, 29th Division. A great read and one of the best examples of an account of the war at the Battalion level.

      Hi mate, are the frogs bored of it. Or are they thankful they got back to liberty? They invented it. All I think is the great generation. Only wish I could be that brave.

      Question?
      Who would you like as allies?
      Knowing Yanks will bring by far more firepower? But hit themselves and allies as bad?
      The biggest question is why did the Germans keep fighting. They were fucked since babarossa? The stupidest thing was Pearl Harbour?
      And they all fucked up the Empire. Actual worldwide law?

      My father was in the Old hickory division 119th infantry rifle platoon. On July 11th he lost his right leg to mortar fire while being pinned down by mg42s while crossing the hedgerows. Casualties in the rifle platoons were 80%. Must have been hellish to say the least.

    Your videos are quite informative. I enjoy seeing the actual land the battles were fought. It would be nice to see then/now pics for comparison. Only because the landscape has changed so much in the last 75 years. 👍👍👍

    I think your next video series should be following general Rose of the third armored division from D-Day landings on through his death at patterhorn

      Would be an interesting story but way out of Normandy. If I exhaust posoibilities in bormandy I'll think abou it.

    Enjoy your videos and I have purchased many of the books you have recommended. I would like to recommend a book for you maybe you can make an episode out of it. Silent wings at war combat gliders of world war II by John lowden. I have a personal autographed copy of his book that I purchased when he was making the rounds of VFW Post here in the US.

    I am attempting to learn more about what is referred to as Hill 91 near the battle that broke out near the town of Ariel France. My father's best buddy was assigned with four other forward observers that came across the Germans and their pants are tanks that were grouping near the bridge. Any information you may have about these men killed by friendly fire when they requested artillery support would be appreciated. I believe they were under the command of general Hobbs.

    • @WalkingDday
      @WalkingDday  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hill 91 wasn't really near Airel. it was 2 miles West of Pont hebert, where the road crosses the new highway. A group of tanks was heading to hill 91. They were to turn left at a certain place but the lead tank turned right and the others followed. The second in the lead tank thought they were going the wrong way, but he'd just arrived in the unit and didn't dare contradict his officer.
      They were now approaching American guns. The officer they were approaching saw tanks through the mist. He even asked over trhe radio if there were American tanks in the area and was told No. They all started firing at each other. This lasted for half an hour. I mention this at 30m mark.

    While I do understand your chanel is d day focused, do you perhaps plan on visiting other battlefields?

    • @WalkingDday
      @WalkingDday  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If I run out of topics in Normandy, I might do. The main idea of the channel is to be on the sites I’m talking about. Just in Normandy, that takes a day or sometimes two per video, and a good deal of diesel. And while once the action is away from the coast or a lesser known operation, I don’t know the details without research, I’ve been through the area many times and know the general lay of the land. If I go farther afield I’d be starting from scratch.
      Having said that, as we’re in lockdown again, I’m working on a second Resistance video which will include London and Sicily and Paris, and I’ll do it from home.

      @@WalkingDday Your resistance video was very interesting. It caught my interest renewed for it. Follow it, i visit in our part of France (l'Aisne) the little musée de la Re'sistance in Tergnier and learn things about fighting nearby where we lived.

    Was it raining much because when I look at photos all I see is a bunch of puddles even though it looks really dry

    • @WalkingDday

      The men were often bogged down in mud and air support was often cancelled due to bad weather.

      Hi
      I do private tours. If I provide transport I can take 4 people. If you are more than four and need transport, I can suggest guides with minibuses. Best to contact me through my web site contact page . Www.normandy-tour-guide.com

      Hi Mike
      I saw the memorial and filmed it. I was going to include it. I started out with the idea of doing about 20 minutes on the East side of the Vire but then realised it was more logical to include both sides. I ended up with 55 minutes so edited and cut to get down to 33.

    At about 2.50 you show the horror of the hedgerows, coming out of a hedge into an open field to face dug in troops in the opposite hedge

    • @WalkingDday
      @WalkingDday  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They hadn’t learned how to negotiate hedgerows before d-day. They had to learn the hard way. Before they took St Lo they had developed a system. I’ll mention that in the video on taking St Lo.
