Absolutely an amazing video to teach the difference between offset and backspacing and to explain offset. I was confused about offset and was finding it really challenging to shop for new wheels because of my lack of understanding offset. This video helped me understand offset and how I had the whole idea of it wrong. Thank you American Trucks!!

Not a pickup person but the video helped me with my Tahoe in looking for OEM replica rims. I wanted to go OEM rims but needed to understand offset to begin with. Video helped with the search even if it was a different vehicle platform…Sierra, Silverado, Tahoe, Yukon at least current generations are pretty close to the same platform. This video really helped with the search and I found a set of OEM with same pattern but black.

Nice video. I could be wrong but I thing not mentioned, depending on the wheel width the tire will “poke” more or less. Your first wheel was 9 inches wide w/ 20 et. The other two wheels were 8.5 inches wide. So a 20 et on a 9 inch wide wheel will poke out further than a 8.5 inch with the same offset. Thanks

I used to have offsets on my 13 sierra ext cab and for anyone that wants to do this keep in mind big tires and offsets are murder on suspension parts also too they do drop the mileage of your truck as well because of increased (wider) stance it looks cool but it's kinda pointless unless your mudding every day or very often I'd save your money for other things

  • @j.r.777

I have a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT Z71 4x4 crew cab. The stock tires on it were the 265’s and the truck looked terrible with that constant stink bug look due to the front being about 2” lower than the rear of the truck.
A week and a half ago I put a leveling kit on my truck. I also added to my trucks set up and bought 4, 18”x9” Fuel “Assault” wheels and had mounted onto them 4, BF Goodrich All Terrain TKO-2 tires that were 285’s, as opposed to the stock 265’s. I have to give props to the place that I went to. The owner was extremely knowledgeable and ordered the wheels that had the proper offset so nothing would rub when the tires would turn either way or direction. I forget what the specific offset was that he ordered but I told him that I like a wider stance on the truck and to have the wheels and tires stick out just a little bit as opposed to the stock look. The shop owner educated me on Chevy Silverado trucks and told me that they are only 1 of a handful of trucks that you can’t go to far out or have to great of a negative offset without having the wheels and tires rub. The owner called around and was able to find me the exact wheels and tires that would not rub, even if the tires were turned to full steering lock in any direction. The shop owner ended up being spot on too, because nothing rubs in inside the wheel wells whenever I turn my tires in either direction. Including at full lock on both sides. The shop owner was also able to get the tires to stick out just a hair bit over stock. So with the wheels that he ordered in for me, they either had a smaller positive offset number over the stock offset, which I had assumed was set at 0 degrees offset, but not anywhere near a high positive number offset like this video just informed me.
After the 285’s wear out I may put 33’s on the truck instead to see how well I like them as opposed to the 285’s. I know that the 33’s, are just a fraction of an inch taller than the 285’s size tire. I think by a 1/2” maybe? So if I can get away with the 33’s on my truck and still have no tire rubbing in either direction to include the tires being at full lock in either direction, then that is what I will keep on the truck from then on out. I had always been told that 285’s and 33’s, were both the same identical tire in every manner but the tire shop owner clued me in that they were not, but are all very close in size in every area.
With the truck sitting approximately 2” higher in the back from the bigger tires and 4” in the front with a combination of the 2” leveling kit and approximate 2” in bigger tires, the truck looks so much better now. Another positive is that my mpg has not changed one bit since adding the bigger tires and lift kit and my speedometer is only 1 mph off at speeds of 40 mph or greater. If I had the ability to do so, I would share before and after pics of my truck on here but because it’s TH-cam, I can’t.

Great explanation of offsets, thanks! I'm currently running 275/55r BFG's AT's on Factory 20's, on my 2014. I have the smaller suspension lift and could easily stick 33's on it. But, it rides nice and looks good as it sits, and I still have plenty of clearance for snow and mud. Which are the two biggest issues here in the upper Midwest. :-)

Thank you. Needed this video. I have a '18 2500HD with 17" wheels. 2 questions. 1) Can you go so far that it will ultimately have an impact on wheel bearings and other parts? Would zero be optimal? 2) what would be pros and cons for going to 20s.
