  • I finally installed an Air Gap Intake Manifold and Big Gulp Throttle Body. The Top-end and Mid-range of the power band have improved dramatically. I am very happy with this purchase.
    List of Mods:
    Engine
    5.2 Magnum rebuilt bored .030 over
    Comp Cam P/N 20-602-9 (206/210 Duration, 112 LSA, .480" in .512" ex lift)
    Crane 1.6 Roller Rockers
    Mopar Timing Set
    Mopar Valve Springs with .600" shims
    Mopar Lifters
    Intake
    Hughes Engines/Edlebrock Air Gap Intake
    Hughes Engines Big Gulp Throttle Body
    K&N Cold Air Intake with IAT sensor installed on it (Air Gap doesn't have a spot for it which you're told :D)
    K&N Air Filter
    Exhaust
    Stock Headers
    2.5" Stainless Steel Piping Welded to the headers leading into...
    Magnaflow 2.5" Stainless Steel True Core X-Pipe leading into...
    Magnaflow 2.5" Stainless Steel Dual In/Dual Out Muffler leading finally to...
    Magnaflow 3.5" Stainless Steel Tips
    Ignition
    MSD Digital 6A Ignition Box
    MSD Blaster 2 Coil
    MSD 8.5" Super Conductor Wires
    OEM Champion Spark Plugs
    Stock ECU (due to fuel prices, I do still have the Mopar Performance ECU. The 5.2 would probably push 300 hp and 360 tq with that on now! WILL TEST SOON!!!)
    Stock Transmission (180,676 miles and still fine!)
    242 T-case (Selec-Trac) out of a 97 GC

    Haha I did the opposite when I hooked up my new computer. I immediately ripped a burn out out of the parking lot so it could calibrate WOT. Your Jeep sounds so good! My plenum has blown for the third time so I’m looking to order the airgap for my 5.9. Your right about the sound of the intake. My 5.9 sounds like that with the cold air intake. I can’t wait for the upgrades.

    Hey, my mpgs have actually improved decently. I was averaging a mere 11.8 mpg (85% city 15% hwy driving) and now with a transmission that's on it's way out I'm averaging about 14.1 mpg with the same exact driving habits. I think fixing my transmission should put me in a 15-16 mpg mark hopefully. I have gotten as much as 19.7 hwy (that's great for a 17 hwy sticker statement)

    Thanks for the response. I know there's not a lot that can be done to the 5.9 to get much more mileage, but I'd like to squeeze a couple more out at some point. mid grade fuel is the lowest I can run so every bit helps!

    I don't plan on it, but I might later down the road. The stock computer can take up to 500 miles to fully recalibrate its parameters. I've driven 45 miles now and it's improving every drive =)

    Well not that I don't like AMC (they did great) but Mopar did a great decision by throwing a good old 318 under our hood, and an even better decision in 98 when they threw the 360 under the 5.9 limited. I love my ZJ and I'll keep it til it dies. What I really want is a TJ with a 5.9 Magnum swap with 5 or 6 speed manual!

  • @moneyhungry8604
    @moneyhungry8604  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    yes, but with lockers just be careful on turns because the truck will wheel hop if turned too abruptly. The reason vehicles come with open diffs or limited slip (but still some slip) is to avoid this hopping on turns. On a turn the wheel on the inside spins slightly slower than the outside wheel. without a means of some slippage, the diff can get damaged. Just Be Careful on turns!

  • @moneyhungry8604
    @moneyhungry8604  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just as an update (10-7-12) I have now driven over 1500 miles and the computer has definitely learned the intake and throttle body well The truck pulls hard all the way to red-line. I want to put it on a dyno and run 2 or 3 pulls so I can gie everyone actual numbers instead of guesses. It has to be making close to 300 hp at the motor and 350+ tq

    The point of having the IAT in the intake manifold is due to the heated intake will raise the IAT temps.... that being said ive done the same thing, but not hooking up the breather to the intake tube is silly

    But is it worth double the price over the edlebrock air gap? Because the huges ones is made by them. And they both look basically identical

  • @FullDrawOutdoors
    @FullDrawOutdoors 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    At first I was like wow that was a waste on that 5.2, watching the pull on the freeway I was like ummm that speedo didnt move very fast, then you said it was half throttle. I was like ok that explains it. Cuase I built a 360 with that hughes air gap and I'm running 35s and I did a 7.5 second pull 0-6 in my truck and my speedo flys! I got my truck doing 110......to fast for a truck with 35s lol
    but very cool build!

    Quadra-trac is good but I swapped mine out for Selec-Trac because I like having a true 2wd mode and still have a full-time 4wd mode. Quadra-Trac is "2wd" until the rear wheels slip causing the infamous Viscous Coupler to heat up which transfers power to the front wheels. Hence it's a full-time 4wd system. The Viscous Coupler is known to fail every 50-75 thousand miles (mine failed every 45k). Selec-Trac doesn't have one so it doesn't have that problem. It also won't bind on turns like quadratrac

    I have read that with a stock engine this manifold offers no positives?? is this true? What upgrades have you done? My plan is to put the manifold on 97 Dakota 5.2L. I have K&N intake, magnaflow cat and exhaust (no duals). Would you recommend?

    • @JoeIsCrazyWillman
      @JoeIsCrazyWillman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jarrod Padilla Definitely false, although gains will be very minimal. You're increasing flow in the middle, basically, but without CAI and a free flowing exhaust, you're still not really helping. gives you more top end, but you need those other two at the very least, and then DEFINITELY want an SCT or custom tune to pull it all together, otherwise the computer tries to compensate for the flow to stay as close to stock as it can.
      Mine had CAI and headers+ full exhaust without much of any noticeable gain except sound... then about 2 months ago put an SCT 91 octane tune on it and BAM, 0-60 dropped almost 2 whole seconds! Your stock computer tune will really hold you back. Definitely get a tune when you add this and you will not be disappointed!

      Just did full suspension and truss on my 98 5.9 ZJ and i decided to keep the stock Nv249 transfer. Just opened it up and went through it and deep cleaned it and painted. Swapped out the 46RE with an ax15 with toyota internals. Gonna go with 4.10 axle gears for now since i already have the front gear set and lunchbox locker in rear with the gear upgrade. On 35" BFG KO2 right now but im considering some 37" rubbers

    Mileage might increase slightly, but I'm not sure on power. Low end torque will definitely decrease I don't think too significantly because of the stock exhaust. If you can get an SCT tuner. That with the manifold will wake things up greatly and u the mileage 1-2 mpg

    Would it be negative for me in any way (mileage, power) if I installed the airgap intake without any other mods on a stock engine?
    Thanks for responding!!!

    Dude that things awesome. Got a question bout the t case swap. Did you have to swap input shafts from the 249 to the 242. I have a 95 5.2 zj. And want to do the 242 swap. But am just wondering if there's a 242 with the same input shaft as mine. Pretty sure mine has the longer of the three shafts. 1.55.

    • @moneyhungry8604

      Yes you can without having to swap. just find a t-case from a 93-95 ZJ and you should be good. (96-98 can be made to work but requires more work)

    • @MrFredboy
      @MrFredboy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you go high lift short duration, you better be doing valves and springs too, because you'll either snap a spring, obliterate the ends of any pushrods you install, or marry a valve to a piston. And why on earth would you carb swap from a MPI, electronically controlled trans system? You do know the PCM relies on the TPS, MAP sensor and IAT sensor to help set a lot of functions, like ignition timing, shift points and line pressure, overdrive and converter lockup.. etc, and if you remove those things (you wouldn't be able to run any of them on a carb and carb intake), you're just going to end up dumping a ton of money into making your OBDII Mopar run correctly, and make less power and be less efficient all at the same time! Oh, and good luck finding a fuel pump that will fit into the sending unit that won't blow out every seal on that carb as well.

      Rob bigemon you don't HAVE to, but your computer will do it's best to compensate for the manifold and keep you nearly close to stock power. all you'll really get is low throttle improvement/mpg and cooler sound. Until you actually get a tune (or SCT programmer with the tunes on it), you won't be getting nearly the gains. I just added a tune 2 months ago to mine, which has with headers, full exhaust and CAI, which got almost no noticeable power gains at all from them... until I installed the 91 octane tune! BAM!!! 0-60 improved by almost 2 whole seconds, shifts at 5000-5100 rpm instead of 4400rpm. Really pulled it all together!
      So no, you don't HAVE to have a tune, but yes, you WANT to have that tune! Also, once you have a better flowing manifold, the tune can be made even slightly more aggressive. I have the more aggressive tune waiting in my email inbox until I get my M1 intake manifold & 53mm throttle body installed, and then I'll really start pickin up some power. Best if you also install either a small "RV" cam or at least 1.7-1.72 ratio rocker arms to provide more valve lift to take advantage of that flow capability, otherwise you might lose a little down low.

      MrJoehawkin2007 Make sure you get an SCT or custom tune. stock computer will try to compensate and stay as close to stock as possible. It will run without the tune, but will be drastically less of a gain.

    Im having a hard time finding intakes for the 5.9 magnum every last one I find says its for carb. I want efi, or is the carb thing just one thing it can be used for. I dont want to convert my 02 ram to carb, at least not right now. What intake is best? I want one that has a good feel of power and goos to start building the stock mopar up into a beast. Any help there is so much I dunno what to choose and Ive got a tight budget right now.

    • @JoeIsCrazyWillman

      commanderwhite12 There's still Mopar M1 2bbl & M1 4bbl intakes for sale on the web. Not from regular sites, but either eBay sellers, or else on Facebook under a set of closed groups (somebody you're friends with has to add you) there's a guy named Rolf who sells the manifolds, adaptor plates, billet fuel rails, and 52-53mm ported stock throttle bodies. Fantastic work.
      M1 2bbl is superior to the Hughes by a little bit, tho out of production so what you'll find will likely be used. The 4bbl is a little better for bigger builds, but still similar gains on lighter builds, and he supplies a 2bbl adaptor plate to use the stock 2bbl throttle body, and then when the time is right for big power, switch to a 4bbl throttle body and simply remove the adaptor plate and bam, more flow for those huge cams, forced induction, or nitrous

    • @MrFredboy
      @MrFredboy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wish I still knew how to get in contact with Rolf. He's gone from the 5.2 and 5.9 performance group, all of the ZJ Grand Cherokee groups, and now I can't find a 2 bbl or 4 bbl M1 anywhere for under $1000, which I refuse to pay for an intake that's going to put down half the gains of what a cam, cheap mid-length headers and a tuner would do for the same price combined. The performance difference is way too marginal to deal with people who act like their M1 is a solid block of gold, when I can order a AirGap for $600 to my front door. Really would prefer an M1 in either variation for my R/T build over the winter though, no doubt.. but for me the price and performance differences aren't worthwhile, and them all being used, you never know what condition it may come to you in. :/

      So you're going to sit here and try to lie and tell everyone you're a mechanic, but call tube headers "straight pipe headers", say a straight pipe exhaust and a fucking CAI will give you more power when in reality, all you're doing is moving the peak of the powerband to the top of the curve, and killing more bottom end torque than you're making top end HP? You can't really be THAT stupid, even if you've never touched a wrench, can you? Yes, with an upgraded intake plenum (leave the fucking air filter alone, it's bringing in more flow and cooler air than your hot air intake ever would), headers and a more free-flowing exhaust you will pick up power AND fuel economy, usually around 15%. Then if you throw a cam, valve springs and rocker arms and a tune at it, you're making a good bit more power, and maybe upwards of 5-6 MPG better economy. The factory TUNING for emissions is what kills the power and oddly enough, also the fuel economy in a vehicle. Not so much a hot air intake, tube headers and a straight pipe. You are right, that's a good way to improve your 0-60 time by one tenth of a second and drop your fuel economy a few miles to the gallon. FOH with your stupid lying ass. Also, you really slapped yourself in the face with that "liberals" comment, because I guarantee the bullshit you're spewing came from another dipshit on the internet. Kinda funny how your condescended and played yourself all in one there lmao.

    • @fl6stringer
      @fl6stringer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Ricardo Alcaraz Does this mean that you imply that you're _NOT_ a "liberal's (lol)? I, sir, am a mechanic. You, sir, are not making a very good case for your claims of being one. Also, please refrain from making an ass of yourself throwing the word "liberal's" (yes, you mispunctuated it as well) when you are in fact the one displaying yourself in a manner consistent with those who actually deserve to have that particular slant thrown at them. I'm sure this comment will trigger you so let it fly, brother, let us have some more laughs!

      "5.2 ZJ Hughes Air Gap Intake & Big Gulp TB Dual Exhaust Cam" seriously? You HAD to have read the title of the video before you clicked on it, which lists that is has an Air Gap, Big Gulp, dual exhaust (true dual, and nobody does that on a ZJ with the major PITA that is without running shorties at least, and I happen to know the owner and yes, it does have mid-length headers) and last, cam. The title literally had the answer to your questions, and I'm just wondering how you missed it entirely.
